Why you cannot download WordPad from Microsoft now
Microsoft first deprecated WordPad, meaning that it would no longer receive further development. Microsoft then removed it from current Windows releases. Its Windows feature documentation says WordPad was removed from all editions of Windows starting with Windows 11 version 24H2 and from Windows Server 2025. Microsoft identifies October 1, 2024, as the removal date for the Windows client.

Microsoft’s earlier deprecation announcement said that WordPad would not be installed after a clean installation of a preview build, would be removed during a future upgrade, and would not be reinstallable. Its current Windows removal guidance confirms the change.
Is there a safe WordPad installer?
Not from Microsoft. The official documentation treats WordPad as a removed Windows feature, not as an optional component that users can download separately. There is no current Microsoft standalone installer or supported reinstall path identified for WordPad on Windows 11 24H2 and later.
You may find copies of the old executable on file-sharing sites or software-download mirrors. Those files are not an official solution. A copied or repackaged executable could be modified, bundled with unwanted software, unsigned, incompatible with your Windows installation, or unsafe to run. The fact that a file is named wordpad.exe does not prove that it came from Microsoft.

For that reason, this article does not link to or recommend a third-party WordPad executable. If a site claims to offer a “latest WordPad download,” check whether it clearly identifies Microsoft as the publisher and provides a genuine Microsoft support context. A random executable mirror will not meet that standard.
Which Windows versions still have WordPad?
WordPad may remain on some older Windows installations that have not been upgraded to a release where it was removed. This is why the broad statement “WordPad is unavailable on every Windows computer” is inaccurate.
The important threshold is Windows 11 version 24H2. Windows installations on earlier releases may differ depending on their edition, update history, and whether WordPad was already present. Windows Server 2025 is also affected.

To check your Windows version:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
If the dialog reports Windows 11 version 24H2 or a later release, do not expect WordPad to be available through Windows Settings or the Microsoft Store. If you have an older installation, WordPad might still open, but that does not create a supported download route for a different computer or a newer Windows release.
The best WordPad replacements
1. Notepad: best for plain text
Use Windows Notepad when you are editing text without formatting. It is appropriate for:
.txtfiles- Notes, lists, and basic drafts
- Configuration files and source code
- Text that must not contain fonts, bold styling, images, or page layout
Notepad is not a complete replacement for WordPad’s rich-text features. It does not preserve the formatting, embedded objects, or page-layout behavior associated with formatted documents.
2. Word for the web: best free browser-based replacement
Word for the web is the closest official replacement for people who want a familiar word processor without installing a desktop application. Microsoft provides web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for users who sign in with a Microsoft account.
Word for the web runs in a browser and can create, view, and edit documents, including ordinary formatted documents. Work is saved online to OneDrive, and the browser version supports sharing and collaboration. It is a good choice for letters, schoolwork, simple reports, and documents that need to be exchanged as Microsoft Word files.

The free web apps are not the same as the paid desktop applications. Microsoft explains the difference in its comparison of Microsoft 365 subscriptions and free web apps. Desktop Word generally provides more advanced features and offline capabilities, while access to the desktop applications depends on the applicable Microsoft 365 subscription or license.

3. Microsoft Word desktop: best for compatibility and advanced features
Choose Microsoft Word desktop if you need maximum compatibility with Microsoft documents, reliable offline editing, mail merge, advanced formatting, embedded objects, or professional document features.
Microsoft’s replacement guidance recommends Word for rich-text documents such as .doc and .rtf files. Word desktop is a separate product, not a free WordPad download, and its availability depends on the license or subscription you use.
4. LibreOffice Writer: best free offline desktop alternative
LibreOffice Writer is a free, open-source word processor included in the LibreOffice office suite. It is a practical choice if you want a locally installed desktop application and do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription.

LibreOffice Writer is a replacement—not WordPad itself. Do not assume that every old RTF document will render identically. Fonts, embedded objects, unusual formatting, and files created by legacy software can behave differently between applications.

.txt: open it with Notepad or another plain-text editor..docor.docx: use Word for the web, Word desktop, or LibreOffice Writer..rtf: use Word, Word for the web where supported, or LibreOffice Writer if the formatting is important.
Before converting or resaving an old document, make a copy of the original. This is especially important for RTF files containing unusual fonts, tables, images, embedded objects, or formatting created by older applications. Open the copy in your chosen replacement and check the layout before discarding the original.
What to do if you need WordPad on an older computer
If WordPad is already installed on an older Windows computer, you can continue using that existing installation, subject to the normal limitations and support status of that Windows release. You can search for it from the Start menu or look for wordpad.exe on that computer.
Do not copy system binaries from an unknown website to a newer computer merely to recreate the old interface. Besides the security risk, copied Windows components may depend on other system files, registry entries, language resources, or version-specific behavior. A supported replacement is more reliable.

Downloading the first “WordPad” result
Search results can lead to pages that distribute old executables, bundled installers, or unrelated utilities. The name and icon are easy to imitate. Do not run an executable just because its filename is wordpad.exe.
Confusing WordPad with Microsoft Word
WordPad was a lightweight Windows component. Microsoft Word is a separate, substantially more capable word processor. Word for the web may be available at no cost with a Microsoft account, while the installable desktop version is governed by its own license or subscription.
Using Notepad for a formatted document

Assuming an alternative preserves every detail
WordPad replacements can open many common documents, but document rendering is not guaranteed to be identical. Check important files after opening or converting them, particularly documents with legacy RTF formatting or embedded content.
