A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If page numbers disappear or start over unexpectedly in Word, first check whether the affected page is the first page of a section. Then inspect that section’s header or footer and its page-number format. Word can use different numbering and header/footer settings in different sections, so the cause is often a section boundary or a first-page setting—not a broken document.
Find the section where the numbering changes
Word allows page-number formats and starting values to vary by section. Microsoft Support explains that sections let you apply different formatting to parts of a document. To find a boundary, go to Home > Show/Hide (¶). Look for a section break near the page where numbering disappears or changes.

Break type affects where the next section begins: Next Page starts it on the following page, Continuous starts it on the same page, and Odd Page or Even Page starts it on a page with the specified parity. If you find a section break, note which section contains the affected page before changing its settings.

Microsoft’s guidance is to create sections and set page numbering for each when different numbers or formats are needed: Microsoft Support: Start page numbering later in your document.

Check whether the page is a section’s first page
Open the header or footer on the page where the number is missing. Check whether Different First Page is enabled. It can apply to the first page of any section, not only the document’s first page. When enabled, that section’s first-page header or footer is separate from the one used on its later pages; the number may be absent there even when it appears elsewhere.
If the number should appear on that page, check the first-page header or footer itself and add or restore the number there, or turn off Different First Page if the layout does not need a separate first-page design. Microsoft’s instructions for first-page numbering are at Start page numbering later in your document.

Check whether the header or footer is linked to the previous section
In the affected section, open the header or footer that contains the page number and inspect Link to Previous. Headers and footers link to the corresponding type in the preceding section by default, but those links are independent: linking a header does not link a footer. Check the specific one where the number belongs.

Choose whether numbering continues or restarts
Once you have identified the affected section, set its numbering behavior. In the section’s header or footer, use Page Number > Format Page Numbers. Choose the number format, then select Continue from previous section for uninterrupted numbering or Start at and enter the desired value for a deliberate restart.
For example, if a new chapter should begin at page 1, set Start at to 1 in that chapter’s section. If the page number changes unexpectedly at a section boundary, check this setting for an unintended restart or continuation. Microsoft’s format guidance covers Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016 on Windows and Mac; available controls and wording can vary by platform and version: Microsoft Support: Format page numbers.

Show page 1 on the second physical page
If the first page should have no number but the second page should display 1, enable Different First Page and set the section’s numbering to start at 0. The first page’s number is hidden, while the next page is numbered 1. Starting at 1 instead would make the second physical page display 2. Microsoft documents this approach at Start page numbering later in your document.

- Number missing only on a section’s first page: inspect Different First Page and that page’s separate header or footer.
- Numbering restarts or changes after a page: reveal section breaks, then check Format Page Numbers for Continue from previous section or Start at.
- Header or footer content differs across sections: inspect Link to Previous in the specific header or footer containing the number.
- First page should be unnumbered and the next should show 1: use Different First Page and set Start at to 0.
