To consolidate reviewers’ edits to the same document, use Review > Compare > Combine. These are different jobs: inserting content does not reconcile competing revisions.
Choose the right kind of merge
| What you need | Word command | What it produces |
|---|---|---|
| Assemble separate documents | Insert > Object > Text from File | Places file contents in a destination document. |
| Consolidate edits from reviewer copies | Review > Compare > Combine | A reviewable document containing revisions from the selected copies. |
| Inspect differences between two versions | Review > Compare > Compare Documents | A separate comparison document showing changes as revision marks. |
Combine the contents of separate Word files
Use this method when the files contain different material you want in one document, rather than competing edits to the same passages. Microsoft’s documented workflow is for desktop Word.

- Open or create the destination document in desktop Word. Place the cursor where the first file’s content should appear.
- Choose Insert, open the arrow next to Object, then select Text from File.
- Find and select the source document. Repeat the insertion at each point where you want to add another file.
- Check the assembled document’s formatting and structure. If inserted pages need their own headers and footers, place their contents in a new section so those headers and footers apply only to those pages.

Combine edits from reviewer copies
When several people have edited copies of one shared original, combine revisions rather than inserting each file’s text. Word retains changes as reviewable revisions, allowing you to inspect and resolve them.

- Start with the unmodified original in desktop Word. Choose Review > Compare > Combine.
- Select the original document and one reviewed copy. Add a label to identify changes that are not already marked with a reviewer name.
- In the additional options, choose to show changes in a new document, then confirm.
- Review the combined result and resolve revisions as needed, then save it.
- To include another reviewed copy, run Combine again using the saved combined document as the original and the next copy as the revised document.
The original source file remains unchanged. The combined result includes revision marks and source documents in panes. Microsoft’s instructions: Combine document revisions.
Compare two versions without consolidating reviewers
If you need a difference report for two copies—not a combined set of reviewer revisions—choose Review > Compare > Compare Documents. Select the original and revised documents. Word creates a new comparison document, based on the original, with differences from the revised copy shown as revision marks; the original remains untouched.

What to do in Word for the web
Microsoft lists comparison and revision merging as desktop Word features, not Word for the web features. If Review > Compare or its Combine command is missing in the browser, open the document in the desktop app. Microsoft’s feature guidance for Word for the web covers this availability distinction.

Copying and pasting can be a fallback for assembling content in the browser, but Word for the web’s behavior differs from desktop Word because of browser limitations. Review the result’s formatting instead of assuming it transferred exactly. Microsoft’s copy-and-paste guidance.

Text from File brings document contents into the destination. By contrast, Insert > Object can embed or link an existing file. An embedded object becomes part of the destination and is disconnected from its source; a linked object remains connected to that source. Linking may suit a file expected to change, but neither option is the same as merging editable text into the document. Microsoft’s guidance on inserting objects.
