Yes—a white screen can be removed from video when your editor has a luminance key and the subject is sufficiently darker than the background. It is not a drop-in replacement for green-screen chroma keying: bright details such as white clothing may disappear along with the background.
How white-background removal works
A white backdrop is usually handled with a luminance key, which makes pixels transparent according to brightness. Adobe describes Premiere’s Luma Key as a way to remove image areas based on luminance, and demonstrates it with dark musical notes against white. Adobe’s guidance is that “It works best when the object you want to generate a matte has a significantly different luminance than its background.” Adobe’s Premiere keying-effects guide was last updated January 21, 2026.

That brightness-based selection is the key limitation: if the subject contains whites or other bright details near the backdrop’s brightness, those details can be removed or become difficult to preserve. This is a practical consequence of how a luminance key selects pixels, not a guaranteed outcome for every editor or shot.
Choose a keying method that fits the footage
Luma Key for bright backdrops and darker subjects
Use a luminance key when the background is consistently bright and the important parts of the subject are substantially darker. Uneven exposure, shadows, or gradients across the white surface broaden the range of brightness the key has to handle, so aim for a consistent backdrop and inspect the result closely.

Color Key for a distinct background color
A color key removes pixels that match a selected color. It can work with a nonstandard background color, but white is common in clothing, props, and highlights, so it is not a reliable universal choice when the subject also contains white.
Ultra Key for green- or blue-screen footage
Adobe’s Ultra Key is its chroma-key effect for green or blue footage. Adobe recommends even lighting and describes tools for cleaning up the matte and suppressing color spill. For a conventional replaceable-background workflow, a properly lit green or blue screen is a more predictable starting point than white. See Adobe’s guide to using a green screen.

Track Matte Key when you have a separate matte
If you have a separate matte clip or file, Premiere’s Track Matte Key uses it to control transparency: white matte areas remain opaque, black areas become transparent, and gray areas are partly transparent. This is a compositing option rather than a way to identify a white backdrop automatically. Details are in Adobe’s keying-effects guide.

- Record a short sample with the intended camera, lighting, backdrop, clothing, and props.
- Apply a luminance key and adjust it until the white background is removed without losing important subject detail.
- Composite the keyed subject over the background you plan to use, then check hair, pale fabric, reflective objects, and edges.
- If the backdrop varies in brightness or the subject’s bright details are damaged, change the setup or use a suitable matte or a green/blue chroma-key workflow instead.
These are practical checks based on luminance keying, not a guaranteed checklist or result for every editor. Test footage before committing to a longer recording.

When keeping the white background is the better choice
If you want a clean studio-style talking-head, teaching, or product shot rather than transparency, there may be no reason to key the backdrop at all. The University of Melbourne notes that white backgrounds are less versatile than green for later background changes, but footage can be used immediately with minimal or no editing. No. “Green screen” is often used loosely for background keying. Adobe’s After Effects documentation says consistent background colors other than green or blue can be keyed, and notes that red screens are sometimes used for non-human subjects.
