To turn on Word’s dark interface, choose the dark theme for your platform; to make the document page dark too, switch the page view separately. These are display preferences, not document formatting: Microsoft says the dark page view does not change printing or what collaborators see.
Turn on dark mode in Word for Windows

In Word, open File > Account and find Office Theme.

Select Black for a dark Office interface. To have Office follow Windows’ appearance instead, select Use system setting. In some versions, the theme setting is under File > Options > General.

To make the document page dark while keeping the interface dark, choose View > Switch Modes. The toggle remembers its state for future dark-mode sessions.

Keep the document page white
Open File > Options > General > Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, select Never change the document page color, then select OK.
Turn on dark mode in Word for Mac

In macOS, open System Settings > Appearance and choose Dark. Microsoft also describes Auto as following the specified Night Shift schedule.

In Word, use View > Switch Modes to change the document page background without turning off the app’s dark appearance.

Keep a white page or use a light Word interface
To keep the page white, open Word > Preferences > General > Personalize and select Dark Mode has a white page color. To use a light appearance in Word while macOS remains dark, choose Word > Preferences > General > Personalize > Turn off Dark Mode.
Turn on dark mode in Word for the web
If your browser or operating system is set to dark mode, Word for the web may turn on dark mode automatically. Otherwise, open View > Dark Mode. To change the document page itself, choose View > Switch Backgrounds.
The web preference persists per unique browser, rather than syncing with Word for Windows or Mac. If it does not stick, check that the browser allows cookies. Enable dark mode separately on each platform you use.

Use Word dark mode on iPhone or iPad
Office apps, including Word, follow the device’s Dark Mode setting. On iOS 13 or later, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark. Microsoft’s iOS guidance is for device appearance; its separate instructions for switching the document page focus on Windows, Mac, and the web.

Word’s dark interface and its dark document-page view are related but separate display controls. The page-view switch changes how the current user sees the canvas; it does not apply a background color to the file. Microsoft Support explains: “The dark page background does not convey how your document will print, or the default view your collaborators will see when they open it.” For a light-page preview before printing or sharing, switch the page back to light.
Do not use Design > Page Color just to enable dark mode. That command adds a background color to the document itself; choose No Color there to remove that formatting.

Some elements may not adapt cleanly: Microsoft notes exceptions involving side panes and dialogs, charts, text boxes, and equations. Ink color may update only after you finish drawing. Text pasted from another dark-mode app may appear black on white; on Windows, try Ctrl+Shift+V or Paste Text Only, and on Mac try Command+Shift+V or Paste Text Only.
If you want a black page for reading
Immersive Reader has a separate black-page setting: open View > Immersive Reader > Page Color > Black. This is distinct from switching the regular document canvas to dark mode.

The menu path varies: Windows theme controls may appear under File > Account or File > Options > General, depending on the version.

The page stayed white: The interface theme does not necessarily change the canvas; use View > Switch Modes where available.

The web choice did not persist: Word for the web stores the preference per browser, and Microsoft says cookies must be enabled for it to persist.

Another device did not follow: Windows, Mac, and web preferences are configured separately rather than carried across platforms.
