WooCommerce is usually better when you need ownership, WordPress integration and deep customization; Shopify is usually better when you want a managed store that can launch with minimal technical work. The decisive trade-off is control versus convenience, not a simple “free versus paid” price comparison. WooCommerce has no platform transaction fee, but you pay for hosting, a domain, extensions, themes and maintenance. Shopify bundles hosting, security and SSL into a subscription, then may add a fee when you use a third-party payment gateway.
The short answer
- Choose WooCommerce if your team already uses WordPress, needs unusual catalog or checkout behavior, wants control of its data and code, or is prepared to manage hosting and updates.
- Choose Shopify if you want hosting, security, SSL and the core commerce platform managed for you, particularly when no one on the team wants to administer WordPress, servers or plugin conflicts.
- Do not compare only the advertised subscription. WooCommerce’s plugin is free, but a production store still needs hosting and ongoing maintenance. Shopify’s subscription is predictable, but third-party payment fees can become significant as sales grow.
Prices and payment rules are volatile. Confirm the live figures for your country, plan and payment method before signing up; the rates below are the figures documented by the vendors at the time of this comparison.

What you are actually buying
WooCommerce: an open-source commerce layer for WordPress
WooCommerce is a free, open-source WordPress plugin. You install it on a WordPress site hosted under your control, then add a theme, payment gateway, shipping integrations and other extensions. WooCommerce itself does not add a platform transaction fee to each order. Your expenses instead come from the infrastructure and services you select: hosting, a domain, premium design, paid extensions, development and maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
If you want managed infrastructure while keeping WooCommerce, Antihost managed WordPress hosting provides isolated resources for each site, one-click staging, free migration, automated and manual backups, free SSL and WooCommerce support.

That architecture gives you access to WordPress’s database, templates and source code. You can alter checkout fields, pricing logic, product types, URLs and integrations without waiting for a platform feature—provided you can safely maintain those changes. The same freedom means you are responsible for backups, updates, security hardening, performance and resolving conflicts between plugins.
Shopify: a hosted commerce service
Shopify is a hosted subscription service. Shopify operates the servers and includes hosting, security and SSL with its plans, so you do not assemble a WordPress stack before accepting orders. You configure the storefront through Shopify’s admin, select a theme and install apps when you need additional functionality.
Shopify’s managed model reduces operational work and makes the first launch more consistent. Its trade-off is less control over the underlying software and a continuing subscription. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments as your sole provider, Shopify can also charge a platform surcharge on top of the processor’s own fee.
Cost comparison for 2026
| Cost area | WooCommerce | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Core platform | Free, open-source WordPress plugin | Paid hosted subscription; exact current plan prices were not verified in the available official material |
| Hosting, security and SSL | You arrange and pay for hosting and are responsible for security and maintenance. WooCommerce’s cost guide says quality hosting typically starts around $250 per year (about $20 per month). | Included with the hosted service and plan |
| Platform transaction fee | None charged by WooCommerce itself | A third-party-gateway surcharge can apply: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.20% for Plus, according to the Shopify pricing information summarized for this comparison |
| Payment processing | Set by your gateway. WooPayments lists 2.9% + 30¢ for a US transaction; Stripe’s published US rate is the same figure. | Set by Shopify Payments or your selected gateway. A third-party gateway also triggers the Shopify surcharge above; the surcharge disappears when Shopify Payments is the sole provider. |
| Common paid extensions | WooCommerce Marketplace listings showed Subscriptions at $279 per year, Product Bundles at $79 per year and Gift Cards at $79 per year when checked. | Additional functionality is generally supplied through paid apps; the price depends on the app and billing term. |
The table separates fees that are often mixed together. A card processor’s percentage and fixed fee are not the same as a platform surcharge. A WooCommerce store can pay a processor while paying no WooCommerce fee. A Shopify store can pay a processor, Shopify’s third-party surcharge and an app subscription at the same time.
How Shopify’s surcharge changes with sales
The percentage is applied to transactions processed through a third-party gateway, so its dollar impact grows with sales. For illustration, on $10,000 of monthly sales, the surcharge alone would be $200 at 2%, $100 at 1%, $60 at 0.6% or $20 at 0.20%. These examples exclude the gateway’s card-processing fee, refunds, taxes and any subscription charge. If Shopify Payments is your sole provider, the specific third-party-gateway surcharge does not apply.
Shopify’s Help Center also lists a 1.25% premium on certain Shopify Payments transactions, including examples such as Shop Pay and local payment methods. The way that premium applies can depend on the country, plan and payment method, so check the current Help Center entry for your account rather than treating it as a universal rate.

WooCommerce’s “free” starting point
WooCommerce’s zero license price is real, but it is not a zero-cost store. The vendor’s own guide places quality hosting at roughly $250 per year or $20 per month as a typical starting point. You may also need a domain, a paid theme, email delivery, backups, security tools, developer time and extensions. Those costs can be modest for a simple catalog and substantial for a heavily customized operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExtensions are the biggest variable. At the prices shown in the WooCommerce Marketplace, Subscriptions costs $279 annually, while Product Bundles and Gift Cards cost $79 annually each. Prices can change, and an extension may require a compatible gateway or another paid service. Count every recurring extension in your budget instead of assuming that a free core plugin means a free feature set.
WooCommerce’s own comparison material claims that its comparable app and plan charges can be “roughly 50%” of Shopify’s over three years. That is a vendor marketing claim, not an independent total-cost study. Your result depends on hosting quality, paid plugins, developer rates, traffic and how much administration your team performs itself.
Control versus convenience
Where WooCommerce has the advantage
- Code and data access: You control the WordPress installation, database, templates and server configuration.
- Content-heavy sites: WordPress publishing, custom post types and editorial workflows can live beside the catalog.
- Specialized workflows: Developers can implement unusual pricing, memberships, product configurators or fulfillment logic instead of fitting the business to a fixed platform feature.
- Gateway choice: You can select among payment providers without a WooCommerce platform surcharge.
Those advantages only help if someone can maintain them. A custom checkout can break after a plugin update; an unpatched WordPress installation can become a security risk; and a low-cost host can create slow checkout pages. Budget for a staging site, tested backups and a person accountable for updates.
Where Shopify has the advantage
- Fast initial setup: Hosting, SSL and core security are already part of the service.
- Lower operations burden: You do not patch WordPress, tune a PHP stack or reconcile multiple server components.
- Predictable administration: Product, order and theme tools are presented in one managed dashboard.
- Consistent baseline: A small team can run the store without hiring a WordPress specialist for routine infrastructure work.
Shopify still requires configuration, app selection and theme maintenance. Managed hosting does not eliminate operational decisions; it moves server administration from your team to the platform. The cost is less control and a subscription that continues while the store is active.
Payments: the fee detail that changes the decision
WooCommerce payment math
WooCommerce does not impose its own transaction percentage. Your gateway does. WooPayments lists a US card rate of 2.9% plus 30¢ per transaction, and Stripe’s US rate is also 2.9% plus 30¢. That comparison describes the processor rate for US transactions, not a global rate; international cards, currency conversion, disputes and alternative methods can differ.

Because the platform fee is zero, a WooCommerce merchant can compare gateways on processing rate, payout timing, supported countries and integration quality without adding a WooCommerce surcharge. The merchant still pays for the hosting and maintenance that keep the checkout available.
Shopify payment math
Shopify Payments combines payment processing with Shopify’s own checkout integration. When it is your sole provider, Shopify’s third-party-gateway surcharge does not apply. If you keep another gateway as the primary or an additional provider, Shopify’s pricing page lists surcharges of 2% for Basic, 1% for Grow and 0.6% for Advanced; the Plus figure listed is 0.20% per transaction. These percentages are in addition to whatever the gateway charges.
Payment availability is geographic. A country list reported as covering 40 countries in 2026 was not verified in the material available for this comparison. Check Shopify’s current eligibility list before choosing a plan, especially if your business is registered outside a major supported market or needs a local payment method.

A first store run by a small, non-technical team
Shopify is generally the safer operational choice. The team can concentrate on products, merchandising and marketing rather than server updates. Before committing, calculate the processor rate and any third-party surcharge for your expected payment mix; a simple launch does not guarantee the lowest long-term cost.
A WordPress publisher adding commerce
WooCommerce normally fits better because the editorial site and store share one content system. Existing WordPress skills, theme work and publishing workflows carry over. Verify that your host can handle checkout traffic and that every important plugin supports the WordPress and PHP versions you intend to run.
A catalog with unusual rules or integrations
Favor WooCommerce when you need custom product logic, bespoke fulfillment, complex customer roles or direct database integrations. Obtain a written maintenance plan first: identify who owns the code, how updates are tested and how a failed deployment is rolled back.

A store selling subscriptions, bundles or gift cards
Both ecosystems can support these models, but WooCommerce’s extension fees should be explicit in the forecast. The Marketplace prices documented here are $279 per year for Subscriptions and $79 per year each for Product Bundles and Gift Cards. Shopify’s equivalent functionality is commonly delivered through apps, whose prices vary by provider and usage; check each app’s current billing and compatibility before migration.

A high-volume merchant
Model two separate curves: Shopify’s percentage surcharge on third-party-gateway sales and WooCommerce’s infrastructure and engineering workload. Shopify Payments can remove the specific third-party surcharge, subject to availability and the payment terms for your market. WooCommerce avoids a platform percentage, but a busy store may require stronger hosting, caching, monitoring and specialist support. Neither platform is automatically cheaper at every volume.
An international merchant
Start with payment eligibility, settlement currencies, tax requirements and shipping integrations. Shopify’s payment availability and any local-method premium must be confirmed for your country. WooCommerce lets you choose gateways country by country, but you must integrate and maintain those services yourself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision framework
Score each platform against the factors that create real work or cost for your business. Use a three-year spreadsheet rather than a one-month subscription comparison.
- List required capabilities. Mark subscriptions, bundles, gift cards, memberships, multi-currency, tax integrations, ERP connections and content workflows as must-have, useful or unnecessary.
- Price the payment path. Enter average order value, monthly orders, the percentage of sales through each gateway and the applicable Shopify surcharge. Keep processing fees separate from platform fees.
- Price the operating path. For WooCommerce, include hosting, backups, security, updates, development and paid extensions. For Shopify, include the subscription, apps, theme work and any agency or development time.
- Assign responsibility. Name the person or contractor who handles outages, plugin conflicts, fraud, failed payments, backups and releases. If no one can own WordPress operations, that is a strong point for Shopify.
- Test the exit plan. Confirm how you can export products, customers and orders, preserve URLs and redirect traffic if the platform no longer fits.
Choose the platform with the lower combination of financial cost and operational risk, not the one with the lowest headline number.
How to launch on each platform
WooCommerce launch sequence
- Secure the foundation. Register the domain, choose quality WordPress hosting and enable HTTPS, automated backups and a staging environment.
- Install WordPress and WooCommerce. Keep administrator accounts limited, use unique passwords and enable updates through a controlled process.
- Configure store basics. Set currency, tax rules, shipping zones, email sender details, inventory behavior and customer-account options.
- Select a lightweight theme. Test product, cart and checkout templates on mobile before adding visual customizations.
- Add payments. Connect your chosen gateway, complete identity checks and run successful, failed, refunded and disputed-payment tests.
- Add only necessary extensions. Record renewal dates and verify compatibility on staging before updating production.
- Measure performance. Test checkout under realistic traffic, monitor error logs and confirm that backups can be restored.
- Go live carefully. Freeze catalog changes during the switch, verify DNS and redirects, place a real low-value order and monitor the first transactions.
Shopify launch sequence
- Open the store and select a plan. Confirm the live subscription terms for your billing cycle and country; plan prices can change.
- Configure business settings. Set the legal business address, currency, tax collection, shipping zones, notifications and staff permissions.
- Choose your payment route. Check Shopify Payments eligibility first. If you need another gateway, enter its processing fee and Shopify’s applicable surcharge in your forecast.
- Build the catalog and theme. Import products with clean variants, inventory quantities, images, SEO fields and collections. Preview every template on a phone.
- Install apps selectively. Document each app’s recurring charge, data access, checkout impact and removal procedure.
- Test the whole order lifecycle. Place successful and failed orders, issue refunds, test shipping rates, confirm tax calculations and verify customer emails.
- Connect the domain and redirects. Preserve important product and content URLs when migrating from another system.
- Launch and monitor. Watch payment acceptance, fulfillment, inventory synchronization and support tickets during the first week.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing a free plugin with a full subscription
Compare complete operating stacks. Add WooCommerce hosting, maintenance and required extensions; add Shopify apps, the subscription and any gateway surcharge. A platform-only comparison hides the costs that keep orders moving.
Best Value
Confusing processing fees with platform fees
Write each fee on its own line. WooPayments’ 2.9% plus 30¢ US rate is a processor charge. Shopify’s 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.20% third-party-gateway figures are platform surcharges. They can apply to the same order, but they are controlled by different companies.
Choosing a gateway before checking eligibility
Confirm country support, settlement currency, payout schedule, identity requirements and local payment methods before designing checkout. A gateway that looks inexpensive may not be available to your legal entity.
Installing too many extensions or apps
Every add-on adds renewal cost, update risk and data flow. Keep a register of what each one does, who supports it and what breaks if it is removed. Replace overlapping tools instead of stacking them.

What to verify before publishing a 2026 budget
- Shopify’s current subscription prices and billing terms for your country.
- The third-party-gateway surcharge on your Shopify plan and whether Shopify Payments is available to your business.
- Any Shopify Payments premium that applies to Shop Pay or local payment methods in your market.
- WooPayments or another gateway’s current processing, international-card, currency-conversion and dispute fees.
- Your host’s renewal price, backup policy, support level and resource limits for WooCommerce.
- Current annual prices and renewal dates for WooCommerce extensions and Shopify apps.
- Taxes, shipping software, email delivery, fraud tools, development and accessibility work that are outside the headline platform fee.
Verdict
For most non-technical merchants who value a managed launch, Shopify is the better default: hosting, SSL and core security are included, and the operational surface is smaller. Use Shopify Payments when it suits your market and model the surcharge before relying on another gateway.
For WordPress teams, publishers and merchants whose competitive advantage depends on custom workflows, WooCommerce is the stronger choice. Its core plugin is free and it has no platform transaction fee, but the business must fund hosting, extensions and competent maintenance. In 2026, the right answer is the platform whose total control, payment economics and operational workload match your team—not whichever advertises the lower starting price.
