The reliable way to install a Forge modpack is to use its dedicated server pack when one is available. If the pack does not include one, install the exact Forge build for the pack’s Minecraft version with Forge’s --installServer option, then accept the EULA and launch the generated run script. Java must match the Minecraft release: Java 17 covers Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4, while Java 21 covers 1.20.5 through 1.21.11.

There is no universal server folder that works for every pack. The target Minecraft version, loader (Forge or another loader), Java major version and the files supplied by the pack determine the correct procedure.

What “any Forge modpack” really means
A modpack is a coordinated set of mods, configuration files, libraries and a loader version. A client download is normally arranged for a player’s launcher; a server needs the server-side files, Forge libraries and startup configuration. Installing only the client archive often leaves out files required to run a dedicated server.
Use this guide for a pack that explicitly targets Forge. Read the pack’s Minecraft version and loader before downloading anything. A pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 is not interchangeable with one for 1.20.6, and a Forge pack is not automatically a NeoForge pack.

Choose the installation route

On CurseForge pack pages, look for a server-download option. If it exists, prefer that archive over the ordinary client download. A server pack avoids guessing which client files belong on a server and usually preserves the author’s intended directory layout.
Check these details before installing
1. Minecraft version
Record the complete Minecraft release shown on the pack page, including the minor version. The release determines the Java major version and which Forge installer you must obtain.

Confirm that the pack says Forge. NeoForge is a separate project; a hosting guide describes it as a community-maintained Forge fork for Minecraft 1.21.x and newer. Mods built for one loader are not automatically interchangeable with the other, so install the loader named by the pack rather than substituting one because the Minecraft version looks similar.
3. Server files
Check whether the publisher supplies a server pack and whether it includes an installation or startup script such as run.sh or startserver.sh. Keep the archive until the server has started successfully so you can restore a missing file.
4. Java availability
Install the required Java major version before running an installer. In a terminal, verify the active runtime with:
java -versionThe command must report the Java installation that the server process will actually use. Having another Java version installed is not enough if your shell, control panel or service still points to an older executable.

These are major-version ranges, not a promise that every mod in a pack supports every patch release. If the pack’s instructions specify a different runtime, follow the pack’s documented requirement and verify the result with java -version.

Install a server pack
Step 1: Create an empty server directory
Make a dedicated directory for this pack rather than mixing it with another world or modpack. Use a path that your hosting account or operating-system user can read and write. Keeping one pack per directory makes backups, updates and rollback manageable.
Step 2: Download and unpack the server archive
Download the pack’s server file, not the client-only file, and extract it directly into the new server directory. Preserve subdirectories and filenames. Do not rename libraries, configuration folders or scripts while extracting.
Step 3: Read the included instructions
Look for a readme or script supplied with the archive. A script may install libraries, create the correct launch command or perform first-run setup. Use the script supplied for that pack before attempting to construct a command yourself.

Step 4: Install the required Java
Use the Java table above to choose the major version for the pack’s Minecraft release. Run java -version from the same account and environment that will launch the server.
Step 5: Accept the EULA
After the first installation or launch attempt, open eula.txt in the server root. Change the agreement line to:
eula=trueSave the file exactly as eula.txt. A server will stop during startup if the agreement has not been accepted.
Step 6: Start with the supplied script
Run the pack’s run.sh, startserver.sh or other documented launcher. On a Unix-like host, the script may need execute permission according to the host’s normal file-permission rules. Do not replace a supplied script with a guessed, versioned jar filename; the script may assemble a classpath and JVM options that the pack requires.

Install Forge manually when no server pack exists
Step 1: Match Minecraft and Forge exactly
Write down both versions before downloading. Forge installer names follow this pattern:
forge-<version>-installer.jarThe Forge build must target the pack’s Minecraft release. A newer Forge build for a different Minecraft version is not a substitute.
Step 2: Download the installer
Use Forge’s official downloads for the exact Minecraft release and build. For Minecraft 1.21.1, the official page listed Latest 52.1.19 and Recommended 52.1.0 at the time of the documented check. Forge build numbers change, so treat those numbers as a dated reference and check the current page before installing.
Step 3: Put the installer in the server directory
Place the downloaded installer in the directory that will become the server root, or use a terminal command that explicitly changes to the directory containing it. Running from the wrong directory can create files somewhere other than the folder you intend to serve.
Step 4: Run the headless server installation
From that directory, execute:
java -jar forge-x.xx.x-installer.jar --installServerReplace forge-x.xx.x-installer.jar with the exact filename you downloaded. The --installServer option tells the Forge installer to create the server-side files and libraries rather than opening a client-oriented installer flow.
Step 5: Handle an installer checksum failure
If the installer reports an invalid e-tag checksum error, one documented recovery is to install a vanilla server first and then run the Forge installer again in that server directory. Keep the Minecraft and Forge versions matched while doing so; installing an unrelated vanilla release will not correct a version mismatch.
Step 6: Add the modpack files
Copy the server pack contents, or the pack’s documented server-side mods and configuration directories, into the Forge server root. Merge directories carefully and do not overwrite a newer generated library with an older file from an unrelated pack. When a server pack is available, use it instead of trying to reconstruct this step from the client archive.

Step 7: Accept the EULA
Edit the generated eula.txt and set eula=true. This is required before a normal startup can complete.
Step 8: Launch the generated script
Forge-generated installations commonly provide a run script. Use run.sh or the equivalent script created by the installation. A VPS setup guide specifically advises using the generated run.sh rather than guessing a versioned runtime jar name.
First start: what to verify
Watch the console
Leave the first launch attached to the console so you can see whether Forge loads libraries, discovers the mods and creates the world. A clean process should remain running instead of returning immediately to the shell.
Check the log when startup stops
Open logs/latest.log after a failed start. Read the first error and the section immediately around it; later stack-trace lines are often consequences rather than the original cause. Record the Minecraft version, Forge build, Java output and the exact mod filename before changing files.

The server root should contain the files created by the installer or server pack, the mods and configuration content supplied by the pack, eula.txt with the accepted value, and the documented launch script. If a script refers to a file that is not present, restore the matching server-pack files instead of inventing a replacement filename.
Using a panel host
Control panels can hide the manual installer. Some expose a Forge server type selector; others provide a Custom JAR option. The exact labels and upload workflow vary by provider, and the documented material does not establish one universal panel sequence.
- Check the panel’s software or server-type menu for the exact Minecraft and Forge version.
- If no matching preset exists, read the panel’s Custom JAR instructions before uploading files.
- Upload the complete server-pack directory, or run the Forge installer in the panel’s server root if the host permits shell access.
- Set the panel’s Java runtime to the major version required by the Minecraft release.
- Accept the EULA in
eula.txt, then start the server from the panel’s normal control.
If the panel does not permit an installer or custom files, ask its support team which Forge build and Java runtime its image supports. Do not select a nearby Minecraft version simply because the panel offers it.
Self-hosted VPS workflow
A VPS gives you direct control of Java, the filesystem and the startup process, but you must perform each installation step yourself. Create a separate directory, install the matching Java major version, verify it with java -version, run the server-pack script or Forge’s --installServer command, accept the EULA and launch the generated script.
Keep the process under the account that owns the server files. If you change users between extraction, installation and startup, permissions can prevent Forge from reading libraries or writing logs. The exact service manager, firewall and memory settings depend on the operating system and host; they are not interchangeable with the modpack’s Forge installation procedure.
Common failure branches
The server exits before loading mods
- Confirm that
java -versionreports Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5–1.21.11. - Confirm that the installer and pack target the same Minecraft release.
- Open
logs/latest.logand preserve the first reported error. - Re-run the pack’s supplied script instead of a manually guessed jar command.
“Unsupported class file major version” appears
This message is commonly associated with a Java/runtime mismatch, but the available evidence for this specific troubleshooting claim is summary-level rather than a verified primary page. Treat it as a prompt to compare the required Java major version with java -version, then use the log to confirm which executable the startup process actually invoked.
The Forge installer reports an invalid e-tag checksum
Install a vanilla server first in the intended directory, then run the matching Forge installer with --installServer again. Keep a copy of the original pack files so that a failed attempt can be removed without damaging another server.
A panel offers no matching Forge build
Do not select a different Minecraft release as a workaround. Use a server-pack upload or Custom JAR path only if the panel documents support for it; otherwise obtain the provider’s supported-version list.

Forge and NeoForge are not interchangeable
A pack’s loader is part of its compatibility target. Although NeoForge is described by one hosting guide as a community-maintained Forge fork for newer Minecraft releases, that description is not a substitute for the pack author’s instructions or an official compatibility statement. Install Forge only when the pack identifies Forge, and install NeoForge only when the pack identifies NeoForge. Copying mods between the two can prevent startup even when both packs use the same Minecraft minor release.
Updating or moving the server safely
Back up before changing versions
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world, configuration and mod directories, and retain the old Forge libraries and launch script. A version change can require a different Java major version or a new server pack.
Replace the complete server set
For a publisher-provided update, use the new server pack rather than selectively replacing a few client files. For a manual installation, download the Forge installer that exactly matches the new Minecraft and Forge versions and run it in a new directory when possible.
Recheck the runtime
After an update, run java -version again from the account or panel that starts the server. A previously working Java installation may not satisfy a newer Minecraft release.

- Choose the dedicated server pack when one is offered.
