For a new HTML-to-PDF workflow, start with Puppeteer if pages rely on modern JavaScript, current browser behavior, or print CSS. Keep wkhtmltopdf only when its output and deployment fit an existing workflow and you have checked the exact build you will run. There is no controlled head-to-head benchmark establishing which is faster or more faithful, so validate both against your own pages and runtime.
Which is better for HTML to PDF?
The choice is mainly about rendering engine, page behavior, and compatibility—not a proven universal speed winner. Does wkhtmltopdf support modern JavaScript?
Do not assume it will render a modern JavaScript-heavy page the way a current browser does. The wkhtmltopdf project’s own recommendation is to consider Puppeteer or a wrapper for sites using dynamic JavaScript. With Puppeteer, navigation completing is not always enough: wait for the particular selector or application state that signals the content is ready, then call page.pdf(). Choose a bounded wait condition appropriate to the page rather than relying on an arbitrary delay.

How do I print a Puppeteer page with CSS?
A minimal Node.js example loads a URL, waits for a page-specific element, and writes a PDF. Install Puppeteer in your project first; its package manages a compatible browser for typical setups.

Network-idle waits can be unsuitable for pages with persistent requests; use a page-specific readiness signal where possible. Puppeteer’s PDF API uses print media by default. If the page must retain screen styling, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf(). The PDF documentation also notes that print colors are modified by default; use the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact color rendering is required.
PDF options worth deciding deliberately
- Paper and orientation: set a named format such as A4, or define width and height; choose landscape when the page’s content requires it.
- Margins: specify them explicitly when output must align with a known document layout.
- Backgrounds: enable background graphics when colors or background images are part of the intended output.
- Headers and footers: use templates when page numbers or repeated labels are required.
- Page ranges and scale: constrain or scale output when only selected pages or a particular fit are needed.
- CSS page size: choose whether CSS
@pagedimensions take priority over the API paper settings. - Fonts: wait for fonts to be ready when custom fonts affect line wrapping and pagination.

When does wkhtmltopdf make sense?
It can remain reasonable when a system already relies on its CLI, its rendered documents are known to be compatible, and replacing it would create more risk than value. Its command-line documentation describes page, cover, and table-of-contents objects, outlines, paper size, headers and footers, and a --window-status condition for waiting. Feature availability can differ: the project notes that some features require its patched Qt, while distribution builds may omit those patches. Test the exact binary or package that will ship, not merely a different build on a developer machine. See the wkhtmltopdf command-line usage.
Is wkhtmltopdf safe for user-submitted HTML?
Do not treat conversion of user-controlled HTML or JavaScript as a routine trusted operation. The wkhtmltopdf downloads page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server on which it is running!” This is the project’s warning, not an independent security audit. Sanitize input, isolate renderer processes, and restrict their access to the filesystem and network. The same principle applies when deploying another renderer: the cited material does not establish that Puppeteer is automatically safe.
How should you compare them in your environment?
Run both tools on the same host or container image and use a representative set of pages, including dynamic content, long documents, custom fonts, and any pages with authentication or restricted resources. Record results instead of inferring speed or cost from the rendering engine alone.

- For wkhtmltopdf, repeat on the exact package or binary intended for deployment, including the relevant patched-Qt variant.
The cited sources do not provide a controlled Puppeteer-versus-wkhtmltopdf benchmark or comparative cost figures. A migration described in QFQ’s version 25.6 documentation shows one project replacing wkhtmltopdf with Puppeteer; it is an example, not proof that every workflow should migrate.
