The examples below also cover local HTML, paper size, margins, and combining a cover, table of contents, and pages. wkhtmltopdf is an older tool: its upstream GitHub repository was archived on January 2, 2023, so check your installed build and do not assume every modern website will render correctly.
Basic website-to-PDF command
The simplest form is a URL followed by the name of the PDF to create:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com page.pdfThe upstream usage reference also gives this example:
wkhtmltopdf http://google.com google.pdfIn general, the command shape is wkhtmltopdf [GLOBAL OPTION]... [OBJECT]... <output file>. An object can be a page, a cover, or a table of contents. Objects appear in the output PDF in the order you supply them. See the official usage reference.

Convert a local HTML file
Pass a local HTML file as the input object and a PDF filename as the output:
wkhtmltopdf ./page.html page.pdfRelative paths in the HTML, such as linked stylesheets or images, may depend on how the installed build resolves local files. If a resource is missing in the PDF, check the HTML’s resource paths and the options supported by your binary with wkhtmltopdf --extended-help.

Set paper size and orientation
Use --page-size to choose a paper size and --orientation for portrait or landscape layout. For example:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size A4 --orientation Landscape https://example.com page.pdfOption names and available behavior can differ by build. Confirm support in the installed binary’s help output, particularly if a package uses a different Qt build.

Adjust page margins
Margins accept measurements such as millimeters. This example sets the top and bottom margins to 15 mm:
wkhtmltopdf --margin-top 15mm --margin-bottom 15mm https://example.com page.pdfOther documented controls include background printing, print media, headers and footers, JavaScript delay, and waiting for a chosen window.status value. Consult the usage reference for exact syntax, then verify the option in your installed build.

Combine a cover, table of contents, and pages
Supply a cover object, a toc object, and page objects in the order you want them to appear:
wkhtmltopdf cover https://example.com/cover toc https://example.com/chapter-1 https://example.com/chapter-2 book.pdfThis command places the cover first, then the generated table of contents, followed by the two page objects. The output filename comes after all objects. Page-specific options can be placed after the relevant page object; global options belong before the objects. Check the installed help because feature availability depends on the build.

Check build support before relying on an option
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML using the Qt WebKit engine, and some features require a Qt-patched build according to the project’s downloads guidance. The upstream repository states that it was archived on January 2, 2023 and is read-only: wkhtmltopdf on GitHub. Treat the examples as documented syntax for an older tool, not a guarantee of compatibility with current websites, operating systems, or packaged builds.
Troubleshoot common problems
- An option is rejected or has no effect: Run
wkhtmltopdf --extended-helpand check the documentation for your installed build. Some features require a Qt-patched build. - The output is missing styling, images, or other page content: Check that the input page loads those resources and that local paths resolve from the conversion environment. Website rendering can also vary; compatibility with any particular modern site is not established by the project references.
- The PDF is not ordered as expected: Put page, cover, and TOC objects in the intended order. The command uses object order for document order.
- A page is clipped or laid out incorrectly: Check the selected page size and orientation, then adjust margins. Re-run with the options supported by your installed binary.
