1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor pages whose content appears only after JavaScript runs, use a real browser engine—typically Chromium through Puppeteer or Playwright—or a Chromium-backed service such as Gotenberg. These options can render client-side content before producing a PDF. WeasyPrint is useful for print-oriented HTML and CSS, but it is a different kind of renderer; its documentation does not establish it as a JavaScript-capable browser replacement.
The right choice depends on whether you want browser control inside your application, a self-hosted HTTP conversion service, or less infrastructure to operate. Test candidates against your own pages: no universal performance or fidelity winner is established here.
Why replace wkhtmltopdf for JavaScript-heavy pages?
wkhtmltopdf converts HTML to PDF and image formats using Qt WebKit, and runs headlessly. Its GitHub repository was archived by its owner on January 2, 2023 and is read-only. That repository status is a maintenance fact, not by itself evidence of a specific vulnerability.
The practical issue for JavaScript-dependent pages is whether the renderer behaves like a modern browser and waits until the page has produced the content you need. A page can load its initial HTML successfully while still showing a blank, incomplete, or pre-hydration state in a PDF. Replacing the converter does not remove the need to define and test page readiness.

Which alternative should you choose?
| Option | Best fit | What your team operates | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer with Chrome or Chromium | Application-controlled browser automation, including pages that need interaction before printing | Browser installation, lifecycle, versioning, and workload testing | Puppeteer documents PDF generation. Its PDF output uses print CSS media by default. |
| Playwright with Chromium | Teams already using Playwright or wanting its browser-automation framework | Browser installation, lifecycle, versioning, and workload testing | Validate the selected browser and its PDF behavior for your pages; do not assume PDF output is identical across engines. |
| Gotenberg | A team wanting an HTTP conversion endpoint it can deploy as a container | The Docker-based service and its dependencies | Its documented Chromium URL-to-PDF route is self-hosted, not a managed hosted API. |
| WeasyPrint | Static or pre-rendered HTML where print-focused CSS layout is the priority | Python and the renderer’s dependencies | It uses its own Python CSS layout engine, not WebKit or Gecko; its documentation does not establish client-side JavaScript execution. |
| Managed HTML-to-PDF API | Teams that prefer not to maintain renderer infrastructure | Less browser infrastructure directly, but vendor selection and service oversight remain | Confirm the specific service’s JavaScript support, privacy, reliability, pricing, and contract terms; these vary by vendor. |
Use Puppeteer or Playwright when browser behavior matters
These are the closest fit when content depends on scripts, browser APIs, or UI interaction. You control navigation, readiness conditions, and print settings in code. Puppeteer explicitly documents PDF generation; Playwright’s Page API supports page interaction and PDF generation, but check the current API and browser limitations when choosing an engine.
Use Gotenberg when you want an HTTP boundary
Gotenberg packages conversion behind a Docker-based API and documents a Chromium URL-to-PDF endpoint at /forms/chromium/convert/url. This can separate conversion from the application that requests it, but it does not make the service managed: your team still deploys and operates it.
Use WeasyPrint for document layout, not as an assumed browser substitute
WeasyPrint 70.0 is a BSD-licensed HTML/CSS renderer with its own Python layout engine. Its stable documentation lists Python 3.10 or later and describes a focus on web standards for printing. That makes it a candidate for document-like, static or pre-rendered HTML, but does not establish it as a solution for pages whose required content is generated in the browser by JavaScript.
Consider a managed service only after checking its terms
A hosted API can shift browser infrastructure work to a vendor. Do not infer capabilities or costs from the category: verify that the named service runs the JavaScript your page needs, how it determines readiness, how it handles sensitive URLs and credentials, and what its current pricing and contractual terms cover.

A practical migration process
- Confirm the JavaScript dependency. Identify content that is missing from the initial HTML or appears only after hydration, API calls, user interaction, or lazy loading. If the PDF needs that content, prioritize browser-based Chromium automation or a Chromium-backed service.
- Define readiness explicitly. Decide what proves the page is ready: a specific selector appearing, an application state changing, or another site-specific condition. A fixed delay may be simple but can waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones. Test the actual readiness behavior; the cited product documentation does not validate any particular target site.
- Choose who owns the browser process. Use Puppeteer or Playwright for direct application control, Gotenberg for a self-operated container API, or evaluate a managed API if you want a vendor to run the rendering infrastructure.
- Match PDF layout settings deliberately. Compare paper size, margins, page breaks, fonts, backgrounds, and color output. Puppeteer’s PDF generation uses print media by default; if the page is designed for screen media, test emulating screen media before generating the PDF. Print color adjustment may also be needed to preserve exact colors.
- Build a representative test set. Include pages with slow data, long content, custom fonts, lazy images, and the CSS patterns your documents rely on. Compare visual output, completion time, memory, throughput, and failures in your own deployment environment. No comparable benchmark establishes a universal speed or cost winner.
- Roll out with failure handling. Record which stage failed—navigation, readiness, rendering, or delivery—and retain enough context to reproduce the issue without exposing credentials or private page data in logs.
Basic runnable examples
These examples show the conversion path; they do not guarantee that an arbitrary site has finished rendering. Replace the readiness condition with a selector or state that is meaningful for your application, and set PDF options to match your output requirements.
Puppeteer with Node.js
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then save this as pdf.mjs and run node pdf.mjs. Puppeteer manages a compatible browser installation through its package setup; deployment still needs appropriate browser dependencies and resource limits.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
// Prefer an application-specific selector when one signals readiness.
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
networkidle0 is only a navigation wait condition; pages with persistent network activity or delayed app work may require a more targeted readiness check. PDF output uses print media by default. If you need screen styling, emulate screen media before calling page.pdf(), then verify colors and page breaks.
Playwright with Node.js
Install Playwright and its browser for your chosen deployment, then use this example in an ES module. Check current API and browser support before choosing an engine; the PDF behavior should be tested on the engine you deploy.

Gotenberg with cURL
After deploying Gotenberg, post the target URL as form data to its Chromium conversion route. Replace the local service address if your deployment exposes a different endpoint.
curl --request POST 'http://localhost:3000/forms/chromium/convert/url'
--form 'url=https://example.com'
--output page.pdf
Use Gotenberg’s current deployment and endpoint documentation for container configuration and any supported form options; the command above illustrates the URL-conversion route, not a full production deployment.

Common migration problems and fixes
- The PDF is blank or misses dynamic content. The page may not have reached its application-ready state when printing began. Wait for a meaningful selector or state and test it on slow as well as fast loads.
- The PDF looks different from the browser window. Check print-versus-screen media, paper size, margins, page breaks, fonts, and background printing. Puppeteer’s default PDF media is print; screen styling must be requested and verified explicitly.
- Colors do not match. Print color handling can change the result. Check print color adjustment and compare the generated PDF in the viewers your readers actually use.
- A network-idle wait never completes or is unreliable. Persistent connections can keep network activity alive, while a quiet network does not necessarily prove the app finished rendering. Prefer a site-specific readiness signal where possible.
- A conversion works locally but fails in deployment. Browser installation, runtime dependencies, process lifecycle, and resource limits are part of operating a browser-based renderer. Check the deployed browser version and environment, then reproduce with the same target page and readiness condition.
- WeasyPrint omits content that appears in a browser. It is a separate Python HTML/CSS layout engine, not a full browser engine. Use pre-rendered HTML or move to a browser-backed option if the missing content requires client-side JavaScript.
- Output is slow or memory use rises under load. Measure representative documents and concurrency in your own environment. The available documentation does not establish a universal performance winner or comparable benchmark.
Cost, performance, and reliability trade-offs
With Puppeteer or Playwright, the application owns browser installation, lifecycle, versioning, and workload testing. Gotenberg changes the interface to an HTTP service but still leaves deployment and operations with your team. A managed API may reduce that infrastructure responsibility, but vendor-specific pricing, reliability, privacy, and terms must be checked directly.
For any self-operated option, measure your own page mix and deployment conditions: time to readiness, PDF generation time, memory, throughput, and behavior when pages time out or fail. Keep navigation and rendering failures observable, and avoid reporting a failed conversion as a valid document. No evidence here supports a general claim that one option is fastest, cheapest, or most reliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is wkhtmltopdf’s archived repository proof that it is insecure?
No. The repository being archived and read-only establishes its maintenance status; it does not by itself establish a particular vulnerability.
Can WeasyPrint run a website’s JavaScript?
Its documentation describes its own Python HTML/CSS layout engine and does not document client-side JavaScript execution. Do not rely on it for JavaScript-generated page content without independently validating your exact workflow.
Does a browser’s network-idle event guarantee that a page is ready to print?
No. Network quiet is not necessarily the same as application readiness. For pages with delayed rendering, use a page-specific readiness signal and test it under realistic load conditions.
