First identify what is failing
Boxes usually point to a font-discovery or character-coverage question: can the process running wkhtmltoimage see a font, and does that font contain the characters in the text? Correctly displayed individual letters combined in the wrong order or shape suggest a different question: whether the renderer handles Devanagari layout correctly.

Qt documentation explains that Qt normally uses fontconfig to access system fonts and FreeType to produce font output. It also cautions that fonts commonly do not contain every Unicode character. Test with a minimal Hindi sample

Create a small local HTML file with literal Unicode Hindi text. Include ordinary letters, vowel signs, and at least one conjunct so the sample exercises more than isolated glyphs.

Render it using the same wkhtmltoimage binary and runtime context as the failing job—not a different desktop session or browser.

Compare the output with a current browser. If the minimal sample fails in wkhtmltoimage too, investigate that renderer’s font environment and layout behavior. If it works but the remote page does not, compare the page content, styles, and runtime before blaming a font.
This controlled comparison is a diagnostic approach, not a fix confirmed for every wkhtmltoimage installation.

Check font discovery and character coverage
Inspect fonts from the account, container, service, or scheduled-job context that launches wkhtmltoimage. A font installed for an interactive user may not be visible to a service running under another account. Confirm that the relevant font is discoverable in that execution environment and includes the Devanagari code points used by the sample.
If the font is missing or lacks those characters, making an appropriate font available to the renderer may address the boxes. It is not a guaranteed repair for a specific page or legacy build: font installation cannot establish that the renderer will lay out all Devanagari combinations correctly.
Qt’s documentation also describes a fallback font database in an embedded Linux context when fontconfig is unavailable. That detail is not evidence that a Windows package or another wkhtmltoimage build uses the same fallback mechanism. Distinguish missing glyphs from Devanagari layout problems
Devanagari writing involves consonant clusters, virama, conjunct forms, and combining vowel signs; it is not just a sequence of unrelated standalone glyphs. The W3C’s Devanagari layout document describes these requirements, but it does not certify that any particular wkhtmltoimage build meets them. W3C Devanagari Layout Requirements

- Boxes or absent characters: start with font visibility and character coverage.
- Visible letters with misplaced marks or malformed clusters: investigate script shaping and layout support in the renderer.
- A minimal sample works but a site fails: compare the exact page and runtime; do not infer that the font is the sole cause.
Compare the real page and rendering environment
A 2020 report described Devanagari rendering trouble on some Indian newspaper pages using wkhtmltoimage/imgkit. Its issue page identifies Windows 10 and includes resource warnings and other rendering messages, but it does not establish that those messages caused the Hindi symptoms or provide a maintainer-confirmed universal fix. The wkhtmltopdf repository was archived on 2023-01-02 and is read-only. wkhtmltopdf issue #4797
When comparing results, record the page or local sample, the precise wkhtmltoimage binary/build, operating system, launching account or container, and available fonts. Keep unrelated warnings—such as failed image loads—separate from the Devanagari symptom unless a controlled comparison shows they are connected.

Does installing a Devanagari font always fix Hindi boxes in wkhtmltoimage?
No. It may address missing font coverage or discovery, but it does not establish that a particular wkhtmltoimage build can lay out Devanagari correctly.

Why do some Hindi letters appear while vowel signs or conjuncts look wrong?
That pattern points toward script layout or shaping behavior rather than simply absent characters. Devanagari uses combining marks and consonant clusters.
Is there a confirmed fix for the newspaper-site issue reported in 2020?
The archived issue page does not provide a maintainer-confirmed diagnosis or universal resolution.
