Use Percy as a visual-regression layer in your storefront’s automated tests: capture stable shopping states, compare them with approved screenshots, and review differences before merging changes. It does not replace functional, payment, accessibility, or customer research. Percy’s documented workflow is general; the page choices and responsive coverage below are practical guidance for an Indian ecommerce site, not claims about Indian device or browser usage.
What Percy checks—and what it does not
Percy captures page or component screenshots during test runs and compares them with approved baselines. A Percy build groups snapshots so a team can inspect visual differences, approve intentional changes, or ask for regressions to be fixed. Linking the project to a source repository can add commit and pull-request context. BrowserStack’s Percy visual-testing overview describes this workflow.

A changed screenshot is evidence of a rendered change, not proof of a defect. Percy does not establish that a button works, an order can be paid for, a page is accessible, or a design suits customers. Keep those checks in their appropriate functional, payment, accessibility, and user-research processes.
Choose a Percy setup that fits your test stack
For snapshots at meaningful points in an existing user journey, integrate Percy with your automated tests. Percy’s integration guidance names Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, and Appium as examples. BrowserStack also describes its SDK as a unified route for functional and visual testing, while Percy SDK lets teams add Percy to their own automated tests. If you need a quick evaluation, have a static site, use an unsupported framework, or want ad-hoc captures, Percy’s scriptless CLI path may be more suitable. Check the current support guidance before selecting a framework or browser matrix because product support can change. Percy integration options
#1 Best Overall
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Percy SDK or framework integration | Your tests already visit defined states and you want snapshots at specific points in those journeys. | Requires integrating capture steps with the test suite. |
| BrowserStack SDK | You want BrowserStack’s described unified route for functional and visual testing. | Choose it based on your existing execution and testing needs; verify current framework and browser support. |
| Scriptless Percy CLI | You want a fast evaluation, static-site snapshots, unsupported-framework coverage, or ad-hoc captures. | It is less tied to meaningful checkpoints in an automated shopper journey. |
Set up the project and first baseline
- Create a Percy Web project. Create a project for the storefront and decide whether Percy SDK or BrowserStack SDK fits the test stack. Follow the current project creation guide.
- Choose how snapshots will be captured. Use an integration for defined journey states, or the CLI path for ad-hoc or quick evaluation captures. Consult the current integration options when confirming supported tools.
- Connect source control if review context is useful. Link the repository if you want pull-request and commit context. Percy’s project token is project-specific; store it as a secret in your CI environment and do not expose a live token in public code or logs.
- Decide baseline and browser handling. BrowserStack describes Git baselines as recommended for feature-development workflows and Visual Git for QA/SDET test automation. Percy’s predefined browser environments offer a lightweight path; use BrowserStack Automate when you require a wider range of real browser environments. Check the current supported browser matrix before setting coverage. Project guidance and integration guidance
- Capture stable, useful storefront states. Add snapshots only after the page has reached the intended state; suggested starting pages are listed below.
- Run and review the first build. Inspect the screenshots and accept the initial baseline only after the team confirms it represents the intended design. On later changes, review differences and approve only intentional updates. Percy supports approval at snapshot, group, or build level. Visual-testing workflow
Which ecommerce pages and states should you capture?
Start with customer-visible states that are important to the storefront. This list is implementation guidance, not a Percy requirement.
- Category or product listing: include a representative listing with its navigation, filters, sorting, product cards, and pagination or load-more control if present.
- Product detail: capture the image gallery, price, variant selection, stock or availability message, and add-to-cart area.
- Cart: cover a populated cart and, if it matters to the shopping flow, the empty-cart state.
- Checkout: capture relevant form and validation states, but keep visual comparison separate from testing payment processing or order completion.
- Search: include a results state and a useful no-results state if shoppers encounter it.
- Account: capture relevant signed-in or signed-out screens, such as account details or order history.
Include loading, error, empty, or validation states when they affect shoppers and can be made deterministic. Avoid snapshots of transient states that vary unpredictably between runs.

Set viewport widths and control visual noise
Percy’s configuration reference lists default viewport widths of 375px and 1280px, with a minimum snapshot height of 1024px. These are configuration defaults, not evidence of Indian audience device distribution. Choose widths based on the storefront’s own CSS breakpoints and first-party analytics, then keep those widths consistent between baseline and comparison builds. Percy configuration options

Before capture, wait for critical content, fonts, images, and asynchronous UI to settle. Personalization, rotating banners, current prices, inventory, delivery estimates, timestamps, and randomized promotions can all create noisy differences. Where appropriate, scope the capture or use Percy’s ignore-region options for genuinely variable areas. Do not ignore a region whose visual correctness you intend to test. Configuration options include scope and ignore regions; consult the reference for current names and behavior. Configuration reference
Review diffs and govern approvals
- Check whether the change was expected for the pull request or release.
- Inspect for customer-visible issues such as clipped text, overlap, missing content, or broken alignment.
- Check the same state at each selected viewport and browser; a correct desktop rendering does not establish that other captures are correct.
- Approve only reviewed, intentional changes. Request a fix for a visual regression.
- Decide who can approve baselines and which review statuses should block a merge. With source-control integration, Percy status can be connected to pull requests, and repository settings can optionally block merges based on build status. Percy workflow and review
Plan browser coverage, history, and review effort
More states, widths, and browser environments can expand the amount of screenshot review. Begin with the states and breakpoints that matter to the storefront, then extend coverage where risk or observed issues justify it. Use Percy’s predefined browser environments for a lighter browser-coverage path; consider BrowserStack Automate when the project needs a wider range of real browser environments. Confirm the current browser matrix before relying on particular combinations.

For a one-off screenshot rather than an approved-baseline test suite, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, not a substitute for Percy’s baseline comparison and pull-request review workflow. Its clean-shot handling accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Common problems and fixes
- Snapshots differ on every run: capture only after critical UI settles; investigate rotating, personalized, or time-sensitive content. Scope the capture or ignore a genuinely variable region only if that region is not under visual test.
- The baseline looks wrong: do not approve the first build automatically. Check that the test reached the intended page and state, that assets loaded, and that the capture used the intended viewport before accepting it.
- Pull-request context or status is missing: confirm the Percy project is linked to the correct repository and that the CI run is using that project’s token as a secret.
- A browser or framework combination is unavailable: check Percy’s current integration documentation and supported browser matrix; use the documented integration path that matches the required coverage.
- Review volume is too high: reduce redundant states or widths and prioritize important shopper journeys; do not mask meaningful interface areas simply to suppress diffs.
Frequently asked questions
Can Percy validate an Indian payment gateway or local compliance requirement?
Visual snapshots can show the interface state around a payment or compliance flow, but the documentation cited here does not establish local payment-provider support, regulatory coverage, or India-specific behavior. Test those requirements separately against authoritative provider and compliance guidance.
Does 375px represent the right mobile width for every Indian storefront?
No. It is a documented Percy default width, not a market-share recommendation. Use the site’s breakpoints and first-party analytics to choose the widths that matter.
