Wix is the more direct fit if you want to build and host a site in one managed platform; HostGator is the fit if you specifically want WordPress hosting and are prepared to manage a WordPress site. They are not equivalent website builders: HostGator says its own Website Builder is no longer offered to new signups. The useful comparison is therefore Wix’s integrated builder against WordPress hosted by HostGator.
What you are comparing: an integrated builder or WordPress hosting
| Decision point | Wix | HostGator |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | A hosted website builder with site tools and hosting included in its plans. | Hosting for WordPress and other supported applications; WordPress can be installed with one click. |
| Building the site | Build within Wix’s platform, with plan-dependent features for marketing, payments, and commerce. | Build with WordPress rather than a newly available HostGator editor. |
| Who manages the setup | Wix combines the builder and hosting in one service. | You choose and manage a WordPress site on the hosting plan. |
| Provider’s own builder | The builder is Wix’s core product. | HostGator says its Website Builder is no longer offered to new signups; existing customers are told their service is unchanged. HostGator’s Website Builder notice |
Wix lists Free, Light, Core, Business, and Business Elite plans. Hosting and customer care are included across the plans, while storage, marketing tools, collaborators, payment features, and commerce capabilities vary. HostGator lists shared-hosting and WordPress options; their allowances and features also vary by plan. Compare the specific features you need, not just plan names. Choose Wix for a guided, combined workflow
Wix is suited to someone who wants the site builder, hosting, and business tools together rather than choosing and maintaining a separate WordPress installation. Review the plan for the functions your site needs: a custom domain, removal of Wix ads, accepting payments, or more advanced commerce features may require a paid tier. Consider HostGator if WordPress is the requirement
HostGator’s WordPress hosting is the relevant option if you specifically want WordPress and are comfortable building and managing that site. The provider lists one-click installation and plan-specific site and storage allowances. Check whether the plan’s backup arrangements meet your needs: HostGator’s comparison says its WordPress hosting does not include weekly backups, so consider a separate backup plan if necessary. Free entry, domains, and branding
Wix lets you create a free site, but the free option uses an assigned Wix web address and displays Wix ads. A paid site plan is needed to connect a custom domain and remove the ads. Wix says the domain can be registered with Wix or another registrar; the domain and the website plan are separate subscriptions. Wix plan differences · Connecting a domain to Wix
Wix’s help pages differ on free-site bandwidth: its hosting page lists 500 MB, while its plan-upgrade page lists up to 1 GB. Because the figures conflict, do not rely on either as a definitive allowance; check the current plan details in your Wix account. Both pages describe a 500 MB storage limit for free hosting. HostGator advertises a free domain with eligible hosting terms, but the offer is conditional on the term length and the domain renews at regular rates after its first year. Treat domain registration as a separate ongoing cost when comparing the services. HostGator shared hosting
How to compare the real cost, including renewal
There is no single universal price for either service. Wix says its displayed prices vary by location and currency; the listed annual subscription price is paid in full for the year, and plans renew automatically unless auto-renewal is disabled. Use the live page for your location and check the subscription term before deciding. Wix plans · Wix subscription renewal and cancellation
HostGator’s public page displayed introductory monthly rates of $2.75 for Hatchling, $3.95 for Baby, and $5.95 for Business when accessed on October 7, 2026. These are initial-term promotional rates, not renewal prices. HostGator says annual and three-year terms are billed upfront as a total; a monthly breakdown is a comparison aid, not necessarily the amount charged each month. Check the live checkout for the price, term, and renewal rate that apply to your location and plan. HostGator shared hosting · HostGator pricing information
