Choose the Garmin Index S2 if you already use Garmin Connect and mainly want weight trends plus standard body-composition estimates. Choose the Withings Body Scan if its wider health-measurement range is more useful to you. Neither is an established accuracy winner: the available evidence does not include an independent, directly comparable test of these two scales.
At a glance: how the scales differ

Which scale should you choose?
Choose Garmin Index S2 for Garmin Connect and household trends
The Index S2 automatically syncs readings over Wi-Fi to Garmin Connect after setup. Garmin’s launch announcement specifies support for up to 16 users and a 30-day weight trend displayed on the scale. If your health and fitness records already live in Garmin Connect, that integration is the clearest reason to prefer the Garmin Index S2 smart scale.

Its documented measurements cover the basics many buyers want to follow: weight, body-fat percentage, BMI, skeletal muscle mass, bone mass and body-water percentage. Garmin says battery life is up to nine months, but that is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a guarantee for every household or usage pattern.

Withings presents the original Body Scan as measuring body composition alongside additional cardiovascular indicators. That broader set may suit someone who wants more than weight and standard composition estimates, provided those measurements and the Withings app fit their needs. Review the Withings scale comparison and verify the exact model generation before buying the Withings Body Scan smart scale.

What the accuracy evidence does—and does not—show
Withings says Mon Stade, a French health and sports center, collaborated on a comparison involving 80 people. Its account describes one DEXA control scan and three consecutive Body Scan measurements for each participant. Withings reports correlations of r = 0.99 for total fat mass, r = 0.98 for lean mass, r = 0.98 for total muscle mass and r = 0.95 for total water mass. The company’s DEXA comparison explanation does not state a publication date.
These are correlations reported by Withings, not independent findings. Correlation indicates that measurements tend to vary together; by itself, it does not show that every person’s scale reading closely agrees with a DEXA result. Nor does it establish that Body Scan is more accurate than Index S2: the cited evidence does not test both models against the same reference under the same protocol.

Garmin’s Index S2 owner’s manual says the scale uses bioelectrical impedance (BIA): a small electrical current passes from one foot through the body to the other, and the scale uses that measurement to estimate body composition. Neither scale’s estimates should be treated as diagnostic measurements or a substitute for clinical assessment.

Check the Withings model generation before comparing prices
Withings lists “Body Scan” and “BodyScan 2” as separate products. Its support FAQ says BodyScan 2 launched in the EU on June 9, 2026, and in the US on July 20, 2026. The FAQ lists prices of €499.95, £449.95 and $599.95 for BodyScan 2; those figures are not prices for the original Body Scan. See the BodyScan 2 FAQ and BodyScan 2 product page.

For Garmin Connect users who prioritize household sharing and weight trends, the Index S2 is the more straightforward fit. For shoppers who value Withings’ broader health-measurement proposition, the original Body Scan is the more relevant option—if that generation is available and its specific features meet their needs. If accuracy alone will decide the purchase, the evidence presented here cannot establish a winner.
