You can show MediaPipe LLM Inference output as it arrives by sending each asynchronous result-listener callback into observable UI state, then collecting that state in Compose with collectAsStateWithLifecycle(). Keep the inference task and generation state in a state holder such as a ViewModel; let composables display state and send user actions upward.
There is an important lifecycle caveat before you build: Google says the MediaPipe LLM Inference API is in maintenance-only mode and recommends migrating Android projects to the LiteRT-LM Android Kotlin API. This integration is for projects that still need MediaPipe, not Google’s recommended direction for new Android work.

What the API streams—and what it does not
MediaPipe’s generateResponseAsync(inputPrompt) delivers partial output through a result listener. The listener receives partialResult and a done completion flag. By contrast, generateResponse() returns one response rather than exposing partial results. The asynchronous API does not itself return a Kotlin Flow; adapting its callbacks into observable state is an app-level pattern.

Set up the inference task
The current Android guide specifies com.google.mediapipe:tasks-genai:0.10.27. It creates the task with LlmInference.createFromOptions(context, taskOptions) after configuring LlmInferenceOptions. The quickstart uses a 4-bit quantized Gemma-3 1B model and transfers its .task artifact to a device for development. Check the live guide and your project’s toolchain for current version and compatibility details before copying setup values.
The guide says the model is too large to bundle in an APK and recommends hosting it and downloading it at runtime for deployment. It also names maxTokens 512, topK 40, and temperature 0.8 as configuration defaults—not measured performance results.

Connect callbacks to state
A state holder can expose a StateFlow of a UI model containing the displayed response, whether generation is complete, and any error. On a submit event, invoke generateResponseAsync; in the configured result listener, update that state with the callback’s partial result and completion flag. Use the optional error listener to represent failures in UI state.
Do not assume whether each partialResult is a complete snapshot or only a new fragment. The guide’s short example logs partial output but does not specify that distinction. Verify the callback contract for the exact library version before deciding whether to replace the displayed text or append to it. The guide also does not establish listener thread, in-flight cancellation, or concurrent-request behavior; verify those details against the matching API reference or sample rather than assuming them.

Collect state in Compose
Android’s Compose state guidance recommends collectAsStateWithLifecycle() for collecting a Flow in Android apps. It exposes the latest Flow value as Compose State while respecting the lifecycle. The guide’s dependency example lists androidx.lifecycle:lifecycle-runtime-compose:2.11.0; confirm availability and compatibility with your project before adding it.
A minimal UI shape is:
val uiState by viewModel.uiState.collectAsStateWithLifecycle()Render the response and status from uiState, and call a ViewModel or state-holder method from the submit button. This follows state hoisting and unidirectional data flow: state flows down to the UI, and events flow up to the owner.

Keep generation out of the composable body. Compose may recompose unpredictably, and composables should ideally be side-effect free. A button-triggered generation belongs in response to the button event, not as a consequence of rendering. LaunchedEffect is appropriate only when work is intentionally tied to that composable’s lifetime; it starts on entering composition, cancels on leaving, and restarts when its keys change. Test on supported hardware and plan deployment
Google says the API is optimized for high-end Android devices, giving Pixel 8 and Samsung S23 or later as examples, and warns that emulators are not reliably supported. Use a physical device for meaningful integration checks; the guide recommends pushing the model with adb during development. These are documented guidance, not a guarantee of equal performance across devices or models.

The cited official guidance does not publish latency, throughput, or quality benchmarks for this Compose integration. Treat responsiveness as something to measure on your target devices rather than infer from the configuration defaults.
