A wireless gaming mouse is not automatically slower than a wired one. A well-designed 2.4 GHz mouse with its USB receiver can match or beat some wired models in latency, while a wired mouse avoids charging and radio-link issues. Choose by tests of the exact mouse and connection mode, then weigh battery upkeep, comfort, and the games and hardware you use.
Does a wireless gaming mouse have more latency than a wired one?
Not necessarily. RTINGS reports that wireless gaming mice can have the same or lower latency than some wired models, and that the difference is not noticeable in most cases. That is a broad category observation, not a guarantee about every mouse. There is no representative independent data here that supports a single average latency gap between wired and wireless models. RTINGS’ testing and guidance is a useful starting point, but compare measurements for the specific model and connection mode you are considering.

“Latency” is not one number that describes the whole trip from your hand to the screen. A mouse has to register an input, report it to the computer, and have the game and display respond. A manufacturer’s polling-rate or “1 ms” claim alone does not establish total click-to-display latency.
What the connection changes
- Wired USB: No battery or radio link to manage, and no receiver to position. The cable can drag or catch, depending on your desk and setup.
- 2.4 GHz USB receiver: The gaming-oriented wireless mode to prefer for latency-sensitive play when a mouse supports it. Actual results depend on the mouse and its implementation.
- Bluetooth: Convenient for everyday use and broad device compatibility, but PC Gamer says it usually adds latency compared with a gaming receiver. Choose the receiver mode for gaming when both are available. PC Gamer’s gaming-mouse guide discusses the distinction.
What polling rate does—and what it does not
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports its state to the computer. The nominal reporting interval is 1 millisecond at 1,000 Hz and 0.125 milliseconds at 8,000 Hz. Razer presents 8,000 Hz as reporting up to eight times more data per second than 1,000 Hz, but those intervals describe reporting, not complete end-to-end response.

Razer publishes controlled click-latency figures for its own products and describes its measurement setup. Those are vendor-published comparisons, not universal independent results for all mice. Treat polling rate as one specification to compare, alongside independent latency measurements for the exact mouse and mode. Razer’s HyperPolling explanation also cautions that some older games and CPU-limited PCs may not handle 8,000 reports per second well.
When a higher rate may not help
- Your game or PC cannot make effective use of the additional reports.
- The latency difference is too small to matter to your play compared with comfort, control, or other parts of the system.
- Your mouse requires an optional receiver or accessory to reach its highest advertised rate. Check what is included and whether the accessory is sold separately.
Razer’s setup advice for its HyperPolling products includes placing the dongle within 30 cm and in line of sight, moving it away from active USB 3 hubs, and reducing nearby 2.4 GHz traffic if possible. It suggests trying 4,000 or 2,000 Hz if needed. These are manufacturer recommendations for those products, not guarantees or universal requirements.

How battery life changes the choice
A wired mouse needs no charging or battery replacement. A wireless mouse adds a power routine, and its runtime depends on the model, settings, and use. Compare the specific battery type and the maker’s stated runtime; advertised maximums are not controlled, like-for-like estimates of everyday use.
| Example | Power and advertised runtime | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Razer Viper V3 HyperSpeed | Razer advertises up to 280 hours from one AA battery. | This is Razer’s maximum claim, not an independently measured typical runtime. The optional HyperPolling dongle, sold separately, enables up to 8,000 Hz wireless polling. Confirm current regional specifications and included accessories. Razer product specifications. |
| Logitech G305 LIGHTSPEED | RTINGS reports Logitech’s advertised runtime of up to 250 hours from one AA battery. | This is an advertised figure, not a controlled battery comparison across models. RTINGS notes the included receiver-extension cable, consistent sensor, excellent click latency, and heavier weight than newer lightweight choices. Consider that weight in particular if you prefer a very light mouse for fast FPS play. RTINGS’ G305 review. |
How to choose for your hand, game, and setup
Do not let a small theoretical latency difference outweigh whether you can control the mouse comfortably. RTINGS recommends matching the mouse to hand size and grip. Lighter models can suit FPS play; extra buttons may be more useful for MMO, MOBA, and similar games. Check dimensions, weight, shape, and button layout against how you actually play. What to check before buying
- Find independent latency measurements for the exact model, including the connection mode you will use.
- Confirm that its gaming receiver, polling rate, and any required dongle match your intended setup.
- Compare shape, hand fit, grip, weight, and buttons with your game and control preferences.
- For wireless, check the battery type and advertised runtime, then plan where the receiver will sit. If you experience dropouts or stutter, try a clearer receiver position away from active USB 3 hubs and nearby 2.4 GHz traffic.
- Verify current product specifications, accessory bundles, and regional availability before purchase; these can differ by listing or region.
