How to Set Gaming Mouse DPI and Sensitivity for Consistent Aim

A consistent aim setup starts with stable DPI and game sensitivity, enough mouse-pad space, and input settings your PC handles smoothly. Learn how to tune and record the combination.

For consistent aim, choose a mouse DPI your device can reliably save, set the game sensitivity to match your available mouse-pad space, and keep both settings steady while you practice. Disable pointer acceleration if you want the same physical movement to produce the same cursor movement, and lower polling rate if a high setting causes stutter. There is no single best DPI or sensitivity: the right combination depends on the game, your movement style and your setup.

What DPI and sensitivity control

DPI is the mouse’s configured movement count; in-game sensitivity scales how that movement affects your aim. Both influence how quickly your view turns, so DPI alone does not tell you whether a setup is fast or slow. The same DPI and numerical sensitivity can also produce different turns in different games because each title uses its own scale.

For comparisons within one game, eDPI is a shortcut: multiply mouse DPI by the game’s sensitivity. In VALORANT, for example, 800 DPI × 0.35 sensitivity = 280 eDPI. Treat that number as specific to VALORANT; it is not a universal unit you can directly compare across games. ProAiming’s VALORANT player-settings page defines eDPI this way.

A practical way to choose your settings

  1. Set a stable DPI

Choose a DPI value your mouse can retain reliably. For VALORANT, 800 DPI is a reasonable starting example, not a universal recommendation. In ProAiming’s 20-player snapshot, updated September 10, 2026, 12 players used 800 DPI and five used 1600 DPI; other values appeared as well. Those figures describe that page’s selected players, not all players or an optimal setting.

    • The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
  2. Adjust game sensitivity for your movement space

Set sensitivity so you can track targets and turn comfortably without running out of room on the pad. A slower setting requires more hand travel; a faster one needs less. Pad size, desk height, arm length and whether you aim mainly with your wrist or arm all affect what feels workable. If your surface is limiting your sweep, more usable mouse-pad space may help you use a slower setting, but it does not guarantee better aim.

  3. Use eDPI only for same-game comparisons

If you are comparing two VALORANT setups, multiply each player’s DPI by their VALORANT sensitivity. ProAiming’s September 10, 2026 snapshot reports a median eDPI of 288, with a range of 160–570 across its 20 listed players. That is a description of the sample, not a target proven to improve performance. A pro’s value may not suit your space or movement style.

  4. Turn off unintended pointer acceleration

Acceleration can make cursor travel depend on how quickly you move the mouse, rather than only on physical distance. To disable Windows’ “Enhance pointer precision” option, open Mouse Settings → Additional mouse options → Pointer Options and uncheck Enhance pointer precision. Razer recommends disabling this setting in its troubleshooting guidance. Check your mouse software for any separate acceleration setting too. Razer’s HyperPolling troubleshooting page gives device-specific guidance.

  5. Check the game’s input options

Some games provide mouse-input settings that affect how movement is handled. Razer cites VALORANT’s Raw Input Buffer and Overwatch’s High Precision Mouse Input as examples. Option names and recommendations are game-specific, so check the current guidance for the title you play rather than assuming one setting applies everywhere. Razer’s support page discusses these examples.

    • Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
    • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
  6. Choose a polling rate your system handles smoothly

Polling rate is how often the mouse reports its position to the computer. A higher number is not automatically better for aim or smoothness. Razer says some older game engines may not handle high polling well, and some PCs may lack the CPU resources to process 8000 reports per second. If a Razer HyperPolling device lags or stutters, Razer advises trying 4000 or 2000 Hz. A May 2025 VALORANT explainer presents 1000 Hz as a conventional example, not a best value for every setup. Razer’s troubleshooting guidance is specific to its devices; Esports.net’s May 2025 VALORANT guide gives the dated conventional example.

  7. Record the setup and change one setting at a time

Write down DPI, in-game sensitivity, acceleration state and polling rate. Keep the pair of DPI and sensitivity unchanged while you evaluate it. If you need to adjust, change one variable at a time and practice consistently before judging the result. There is no established universal practice duration that guarantees adaptation.

How to judge whether a setting is workable

  • Turning distance: Can you turn and track without needing to lift or reposition the mouse more often than suits you?
  • Sweep space: Does your mouse pad give you enough room for the hand travel your sensitivity requires?
  • Repeatability: Are DPI and game sensitivity fixed, with acceleration disabled if you want distance-based movement?
  • Smooth operation: Does the chosen polling rate work without stutter in your game and on your PC?
  • Mouse fit: Can your mouse retain the selected DPI, track reliably and feel comfortable in your hand?

How much to take from professional settings

Player settings can help you find values to try, but they are examples rather than prescriptions. The ProAiming snapshot updated September 10, 2026 lists 20 VALORANT players with DPI values from 400 to 1600 and polling rates from 500 to 4000 Hz. Its results differ from the broad 400–800 DPI and 1000 Hz starting advice in Esports.net’s May 2025 guide. The sources describe different things—a conventional starting range and a small, dated player sample—so neither establishes a universal best setting. Logitech likewise notes that the ideal configuration depends on the game, playstyle and personal needs. ProAiming’s player snapshot · Esports.net’s VALORANT guide · Logitech G’s player-settings page
