What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, wireless cameras can slow other devices down, but only when they use enough of a network’s available capacity—or when their Wi-Fi connection is weak enough to compete for airtime. The key is to separate two problems: camera video can use your internet upload capacity, while poor local Wi-Fi coverage can cause unreliable connections and congestion near the router. The right fix depends on which one you have.
How a camera can affect your network
A cloud-connected camera sends video from your home to an online service, using your internet connection’s upload capacity. If several cameras are streaming, or other household devices are also uploading, the combined demand can leave less capacity for video calls, gaming, file uploads, or other tasks.

That is different from Wi-Fi signal quality. A camera far from the router, separated by walls, or affected by interference may struggle to maintain a reliable wireless connection and share Wi-Fi airtime efficiently. A weak signal can cause camera dropouts or playback problems even when your internet plan has plenty of upload capacity.
Watching a camera feed can add traffic in the other direction, too. Google says viewing a feed over Wi-Fi generally uses download bandwidth, typically at about the same rate as the video upload. This is specific to Google’s guidance, not a universal measurement for every camera or viewing setup. Google Nest Help’s bandwidth guidance explains the distinction.

How much bandwidth do wireless cameras use?
There is no single bandwidth figure for all wireless cameras. Demand depends on the model, video quality, streaming behavior, scene activity, and whether someone is watching a live feed. Some cameras send video continuously; others are more event-driven. Supported devices may also adjust their bitrate to available bandwidth.
Manufacturer figures are model-specific guidance, not a universal requirement or a measurement of how much a camera slows a household network. Examples from official support pages include:

| Camera or guidance | Upload figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam IQ Indoor/Outdoor | Google lists 0.8 Mbps at low quality and up to 4.0 Mbps at high quality. | Google’s examples for this model; other Nest devices have different rates. Google Nest Help |
| Arlo Essential Security Camera | At least 2 Mbps upload per camera. | Arlo’s stated minimum for this camera, not a general rule for other models. Arlo Essential FAQ |
| Wyze Cam guidance | 1–2 Mbps minimum upload for SD and 4–7 Mbps for HD. | Wyze’s guidance for its devices; do not apply it to other brands. Wyze Support |
These figures are useful for checking whether your connection may have enough upload headroom, but they do not predict a fixed slowdown. The official pages cited here do not establish a universal, independently measured amount by which cameras slow household Wi-Fi.
Identify the problem before changing anything
Notice what is actually happening. A camera that disconnects points toward a connection or coverage problem; buffering limited to camera playback may involve the camera, its signal, or available bandwidth. If many devices become sluggish during camera activity, upload capacity is one possibility—but other simultaneous uploads can cause the same symptom.

- Slow internet across devices: Check whether the problem coincides with camera uploads or other heavy upload activity, then compare upload-speed results at busy and quiet times.
- Camera playback buffers, but other tasks work normally: Check the camera’s connection quality and its model-specific bandwidth guidance; live viewing can use network capacity in addition to the camera’s upload.
- Camera disconnects or has an unstable feed: Check distance from the router, physical barriers, interference, and the Wi-Fi band the exact camera model supports.
Steps to troubleshoot camera-related slowdowns
- Find each camera’s exact model and requirements. Check its manufacturer support page for upload guidance and supported Wi-Fi bands. For example, Arlo says the Essential camera connects directly to 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, while Wyze says nearly all its devices require 2.4 GHz. These statements apply to those product lines, not every camera. Google also lists some Nest models that support both bands; check the exact model and regional specifications at Google’s device specifications.
- Measure upload speed at different times. Run speed checks during both busy and quiet periods, as Wyze recommends, and compare the results with the installed cameras’ requirements. Account for simultaneous camera streams and other household uploads. A plan’s advertised download speed does not answer whether it has enough upload capacity.
- Reduce camera traffic if upload capacity is tight. Where the product offers the setting, lower video quality or bandwidth. Google says this can reduce bandwidth use and help the network run more smoothly; available controls vary by product. Google’s guidance describes the option for supported Nest cameras.
- Improve the local signal if the camera’s connection is weak. Test a position closer to the router and reduce barriers where practical. Consider interference and use a band supported by the specific camera. Wyze identifies distance, interference, and physical obstructions as factors, but the cited guidance does not set a universal placement distance. Wyze’s connectivity tips provide further suggestions.
- Choose equipment only for a diagnosed coverage problem. If placement changes do not resolve weak local coverage, a router or mesh system may help extend Wi-Fi coverage. It will not add upload capacity to your internet service, so it is not the fix for a saturated ISP upload connection.
Bandwidth is not the same as monthly data
Bandwidth describes how much data a connection can move at a given time; a data cap concerns the total data used over a billing period. A camera may contribute to both upload traffic and monthly usage, but lowering its bitrate to address a busy connection and managing a monthly allowance are separate issues. Google’s bandwidth guidance distinguishes these concerns and notes that camera settings can affect bandwidth and data use. Google Nest Help
