Most setups require a compatible SIM card and mobile data plan; some routers also include Ethernet ports for wired devices. Whether one will work well depends on the router’s carrier compatibility, local coverage and plan terms.
What is a wireless 4G router?
It is a router with a built-in cellular modem. The modem connects to a mobile operator’s 4G/LTE network, and the router distributes that internet connection to devices on a local network, usually over Wi-Fi. Depending on the model, devices may also connect by Ethernet.

The term “wireless” can be confusing: a regular Wi-Fi router creates a wireless local network, but does not necessarily include a cellular modem or provide internet service by itself. Cisco describes a wireless router as combining the functions of a wireless access point and a router (Cisco’s wireless router explanation).

How does it connect devices to the internet?
- Insert a compatible SIM card. The SIM connects the router to a mobile operator, subject to the router’s compatibility and the operator’s coverage.
- Use a mobile data plan. The plan supplies the internet connection and determines applicable data limits and charges.
- Connect devices locally. The router shares the cellular connection through Wi-Fi and, on some models, Ethernet.
TP-Link explains that a router with a data-plan SIM communicates with nearby cell towers to access the internet and generate a Wi-Fi signal (TP-Link’s 4G Wi-Fi router guide).

How is it different from other routers and hotspots?
- Wi-Fi-only router: Creates a local Wi-Fi network but does not necessarily include a cellular modem. It typically gets internet from a separate broadband modem or network connection.
- Wireless 4G router: Uses its cellular modem and SIM-based mobile service as the internet connection, then shares that connection locally.
- DSL modem-router: Connects to broadband delivered over a telephone line rather than using cellular data.
- Mobile hotspot: A phone or dedicated hotspot can share a cellular connection, but it is a different device form from a router designed for fixed or portable placement. Cisco defines a mobile hotspot as sharing a wireless network connection with other devices (Cisco’s wireless router explanation).
When does a 4G router make sense?
It can be useful where fixed broadband is unavailable or unreliable, or where a cellular connection is preferred. Some models can also provide 4G backup when fixed broadband is the primary connection; this requires a router that supports the relevant WAN or backup mode. TP-Link describes 3G/4G backup as one possible use of its router products (TP-Link’s 4G/5G router overview).
A 4G router is not automatically faster or cheaper than fixed broadband. Performance depends on local signal and network conditions, while cost depends on the data plan and its limits. Check the coverage and plan terms available at the intended location rather than assuming cellular service will be better.

- 【How to Use LTE Router with Sim Card Slot】The router 4g is easy to operate, you need to insert a SIM card compatible with the router's frequency band and turn on the router's power. If your SIM card is compatible with the router sim card but cannot be used, you need to disable the PIN code of the SIM card and modify the APN. Enter the router IP address: 192.168.10.1, and then click Network — APN — Enable. Modify APN. (Note: Roaming service, virtual SIM card and IoT SIM card are not supported)
- 【Several Working Modes】The wifi router with sim card slot supports Router Mode, AP Mode and Repeater Modes. Router/AP Mode is suitable for converting wired networks into wireless networks, Repeater Mode can amplify and extend WiFi coverage of existing wireless networks.
What should you check before choosing one?
- Carrier and band compatibility: Confirm that the exact router model and regional version support your operator’s network and frequency bands.
- Coverage at the location: Verify that the operator has usable 4G service where the router will be placed.
- Data allowance and charges: Compare the plan’s allowance, price and any applicable usage limits.
- Wi-Fi and wired connections: Check Wi-Fi capabilities, Ethernet ports and the number of devices the model is specified to support.
- Placement and antenna options: Consider where the router can receive a useful cellular signal and whether the model supports external antennas.
- Connection modes: If you need broadband backup or a wired WAN connection, verify that the specific unit supports that mode.
- Listed versus real-world speed: Treat a manufacturer’s peak-rate specification as a model rating, not a promise of the speed you will receive at your location.
For example, TP-Link lists its TL-MR100 as supporting download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and up to 32 Wi-Fi devices. Those are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent test results or guarantees of real-world performance (TP-Link TL-MR100 product page).
