OpenAI’s Help Center says those apps are “web only.” You can configure ChatGPT on the web to connect to an MCP server running on your Mac, but that does not make the connection available in the ChatGPT mobile app. The practical workflow today is ChatGPT web calling a Mac-hosted server, with a Secure MCP Tunnel as the documented option for a private or developer machine.
What the remote MCP setup can—and cannot—do
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets ChatGPT use tools exposed by a server. In this setup, the Mac runs the MCP server and ChatGPT web connects to it. The server can offer a selected set of actions or data to ChatGPT, subject to its configuration and permissions.

ChatGPT’s custom MCP setup connects to a remote MCP server. If the server runs on a private network, on premises, or on a developer machine, OpenAI documents Secure MCP Tunnel as a way to connect without exposing the server to the public internet. The other option in the setup flow is to provide a server URL. That presumes you have an endpoint ChatGPT can reach and have secured appropriately; the documentation does not prescribe your Mac’s network configuration or establish that any particular server implementation is safe. Check plan access and workspace controls first
Availability depends on the ChatGPT plan and workspace settings. OpenAI’s current Help Center describes creating and testing custom apps on the web for Business and Enterprise/Edu customers, with developer mode and publishing controlled by workspace admins or owners; Enterprise/Edu also has role-based access controls. The same documentation says Pro users can connect MCPs with read/fetch permissions in developer mode, while full MCP support, including write actions, is currently for Business and Enterprise/Edu and is in beta. Set up the custom app in ChatGPT web

Open ChatGPT on the web and confirm that your account or workspace exposes developer mode and custom-app creation. If you cannot see the relevant controls, ask a workspace admin or owner to check access and publishing settings.

Create a custom MCP app using the current web setup flow. Provide the MCP server URL if you have a reachable endpoint, or select the Secure MCP Tunnel option for a private or developer machine server when available. Configure the authentication method required by your server. If it uses OAuth, account for token renewal: OpenAI notes that refresh-token support may need configuration, and without refresh access a user may have to authenticate again after a token expires. Scan the server’s tools and review what each one can access or change. Test with a low-risk operation before relying on the connection for important work. Publishing and action controls depend on plan and role; some write or modify actions may require confirmation, but do not treat a prompt as a substitute for limiting the server’s permissions.

Choose access and permissions deliberately
The important decision is not just how ChatGPT reaches the Mac, but what the server lets it do. A read-only or fetch-only tool has a different risk profile from one that can create, modify, or delete data. Review the tool descriptions and scopes, and expose only the capabilities needed for the task.

OpenAI warns that an untrusted MCP server could access information shared through app use or lead ChatGPT to use tools in unintended ways, including changing or deleting data. Material sent to a third-party server is also subject to that server operator’s retention policies. Connect only servers you trust, inspect their data-handling terms, and avoid sending sensitive information unless you understand where it goes. Fix common setup problems
The custom app controls are missing
Check whether your plan supports the feature and whether your workspace admin or owner has enabled developer mode or allowed app creation. Pro access is described as read/fetch-only; full MCP support is currently associated with Business and Enterprise/Edu. Availability and controls can vary with workspace settings and beta rollout.
ChatGPT asks you to authenticate again
If the server uses OAuth, check whether refresh-token support is configured. OpenAI notes that without refresh access, authentication may be required again after the access token expires. The server’s authentication setup determines the implementation details.
A tool is missing or does not behave as expected
Revisit the app’s tool scan and the server’s current tool definitions, then follow OpenAI’s current setup instructions to refresh or re-scan as the interface allows. Confirm that the server is running, its transport is supported, and the authentication account has access to the expected tools. ChatGPT product setup is not the same as an API integration
Developers can also connect to remote MCP servers through OpenAI’s API tooling, with controls such as a server URL, allowed tools, authorization, and approval requirements. That is a separate developer integration path; it does not enable a custom MCP app in the ChatGPT phone app. Use the API documentation when you are building an application around the API rather than configuring a custom app in ChatGPT.
