WireGuard vs OpenVPN on a VPS: Which One Should You Choose?

WireGuard is a strong VPS default when UDP is available, while OpenVPN offers TCP flexibility. Here’s what performance evidence can—and can’t—tell you.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WireGuard is usually the better starting point for a VPS when UDP traffic is available: it is built around UDP and has a compact protocol design. OpenVPN is the more flexible choice when you need TCP transport or specific control-channel options. Neither protocol can be promised to deliver a fixed throughput or CPU advantage on every VPS; the result depends on the host, software, network path, and configuration.

What differs between WireGuard and OpenVPN?

The key practical distinction is transport flexibility. WireGuard sends tunnel packets over UDP and does not directly support tunneling over TCP. OpenVPN can use either UDP or TCP, which can help it connect through networks that block UDP or restrict traffic to TCP-oriented firewall paths.

That flexibility changes what a performance comparison means. Comparing WireGuard over UDP with OpenVPN over TCP measures both protocol and transport differences. For a closer comparison of tunnel performance, test both over UDP where possible and disclose any TCP fallback.

Factor WireGuard OpenVPN
Transport UDP; no direct TCP transport UDP or TCP
Initial connection and key setup Noise_IK-based handshake establishes symmetric keys Control channel handles setup; tunnel data travels on a data channel
Performance evidence Official comparative figures are historical and explicitly qualified as unreliable for current generalization Performance varies by transport, configuration, platform, and whether DCO is active

Which is faster on a VPS?

There is no reliable universal throughput multiplier for WireGuard over OpenVPN on VPSs. The directly relevant WireGuard performance page describes its comparative benchmarks as “old, crusty, and not super well conducted.” Its listed tests used older Intel laptop processors, Linux 4.6.1, and OpenVPN in UDP mode with an equivalently secure AES/HMAC suite. Those results are historical context, not a dependable prediction for a current VPS.

Actual throughput depends on the VPS CPU allocation, kernel and implementation, endpoint and routing, congestion, UDP treatment, MTU, cipher configuration, and workload. OpenVPN 2.6 also has Data Channel Offload (DCO) options; the documented Linux mode requires the ovpn-dco module and compatible AEAD data ciphers. A comparison that omits DCO status may not represent the OpenVPN setup being considered.

For a useful result, compare the same VPS, endpoints, transport, and security requirements. Measure throughput and CPU separately, and record latency and packet loss rather than treating them as synonyms for speed.

Does WireGuard use less CPU?

It may in a particular setup, but “WireGuard uses less CPU” is not a safe general rule. CPU use depends on the implementation and host as well as how much traffic the tunnel carries. OpenVPN DCO can also change the comparison when supported and enabled.

Choose a measurement that answers your actual constraint: compare CPU use at the same achieved throughput, or compare throughput under the same CPU limit. If one test saturates a core while the other does not, report that resource limit alongside the result.

Is WireGuard’s handshake faster?

WireGuard uses a Noise_IK-based handshake and cryptographic primitives including Curve25519, ChaCha20-Poly1305, BLAKE2s, SipHash24, and HKDF. Its initial handshake establishes symmetric keys, with recurring key exchange for forward secrecy. OpenVPN separates setup on its control channel from tunneled traffic on its data channel; in TLS mode, the same connection is used for both.

A quick initial connection is not the same thing as high sustained throughput. Handshake time measures connection setup, while long transfers are dominated by ongoing packet processing and the network path. Avoid comparing a bare count of handshake steps unless versions, authentication modes, transports, and test conditions are matched.

When is OpenVPN the better choice?

  • UDP is blocked or restricted: OpenVPN can use TCP where WireGuard cannot directly provide TCP transport.
  • Reachability matters more than peak transfer performance: TCP can traverse some restrictive firewall paths, though it is not a guarantee that every network will allow the connection.
  • You rely on a particular OpenVPN control/data-channel configuration: Its transport and configuration flexibility may fit an existing deployment better.

TCP transport has a trade-off: when application TCP traffic is carried inside an OpenVPN TCP tunnel, the two reliability layers can interact and cause performance problems. Use it when needed for reachability, not as an automatic performance improvement.

How to benchmark both protocols on your VPS

  1. Keep the comparison fair: Use the same VPS, endpoint, route, and comparable security settings. Prefer UDP for both; label any OpenVPN TCP test as a separate transport case.
  2. Record the environment: Note the VPS CPU plan and location, kernel and software versions, implementation, cipher, MTU, and whether OpenVPN DCO is enabled.
  3. Measure a baseline: Test the route without the VPN, then run each tunnel with the same workload and duration. Include single-stream and concurrent-flow tests if both matter to your use.
  4. Report separate outcomes: Record sustained throughput, CPU use, latency, packet loss, and initial connect time as distinct metrics.
  5. Keep the conclusion local: State the endpoint, route, test conditions, and resource limits. A result from one VPS configuration does not establish a general protocol-wide ratio.

Practical choice

Start with WireGuard if UDP is available and you want a straightforward VPS tunnel. Choose OpenVPN when TCP transport or a particular OpenVPN configuration is needed. If throughput or CPU headroom will determine the decision, benchmark the exact VPS and configuration you plan to run rather than relying on an old benchmark or handshake timing alone.
