Yes: an old Android phone can provide basic live home monitoring when paired with a second device running a camera-viewer app. AlfredCamera documents this two-device setup. It can be a lower-cost alternative for checking a room, but the available information does not establish that it matches Ring’s coverage, reliability, recording history, or deterrence.
The key Ring tradeoff is specific: without a compatible plan, you can still watch live video and respond to alerts as they happen, but you cannot review recorded camera or doorbell video. Before cancelling, download any recordings you want to keep.

What the old-phone setup can—and cannot—do
In the documented AlfredCamera arrangement, one network-connected device acts as the camera and a separate device lets you view it. That gives you a way to check a live feed remotely, subject to the app, devices, and network working.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt is not established as a feature-for-feature Ring replacement. The available documentation does not establish equivalent coverage, image quality, uptime, night performance, notification speed, or deterrence. Nor does a phone setup, by itself, establish the outdoor durability, doorbell functionality, continuous recording, or professional monitoring a particular household may need. Treat it as basic monitoring, not a proven substitute for every security use.

How to turn an old Android phone into a camera
AlfredCamera’s setup guide describes pairing two devices, testing the feed and connection, and only then mounting the camera device. The steps below reflect that documented process; they are not a guarantee of performance on every phone.
- Check device support. The setup article lists Android 5.0 or later for the camera phone and Android 7.0 or later for the viewer. App availability on the particular device is the practical compatibility check; requirements for Apple devices differ. Check AlfredCamera’s setup guidance and device-support information before relying on an older handset.
- Connect both devices to a network. The camera and viewer each need network access for the paired setup to work.
- Install the app and sign in on both devices. Use the same account as directed by the app’s setup flow.
- Set one device as the camera and pair the viewer. Follow the in-app instructions to add the camera device and link the second device.
- Test before mounting. Open the live feed from the viewer and check connection strength from the intended location. If the feed is unreliable there, changing the phone’s position or network connection may matter more than the mount.
- Position the camera phone. An adjustable smartphone clamp or stand can help aim the camera at the area you want to monitor. It is a positioning aid, not a security-rated fixture. If the phone will stay in place, use a compatible charger and cable appropriate for that device.
Review the app permissions before leaving the phone in place
AlfredCamera documents requesting camera and microphone access for video and audio, media or photo access for saving videos, and—on Android 10 and later—display-over-other-apps permission to help the app run without interruption. Grant only the permissions needed for the functions you intend to use, and review the phone’s permission settings if you later stop using it as a camera.

Ring says a compatible subscription is required to review recorded video from cameras and doorbells. Without one, live video and responses to alerts as they happen remain available. Under compatible plans, Ring motion-event recordings can be retained for up to 180 days; that limit is not a promise that every plan, device, or region retains every recording for that period. See Ring’s recording and plan information for current details.
Save recordings before the plan ends
Ring says access to recorded videos ends when the plan ends and directs customers to download footage before then. Its subscription and trial information also warns that videos may be deleted when a trial ends without a subscription. Download any recordings you want to keep before cancelling or allowing a trial to expire.

Compare the two options against your actual need
| Consideration | Old Android phone with a camera app | Ring without a compatible plan |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | May reuse a phone you already own, but app costs or paid-feature limits were not established in the sources cited here. A mount or device-specific charging setup may add cost. | No plan fee, but recorded-video review requires a compatible subscription. U.S. plan prices are listed above. |
| Live viewing and alerts | The documented setup pairs a camera device with a separate viewer for live viewing; reliability and alert behavior on a specific setup are not established. | Live video and responding to alerts as they happen remain available without a plan. |
| Recorded history | Saving-video permissions are documented, but the storage limits, retention, and paid-feature boundaries are not established here. | Recorded video cannot be reviewed without a compatible plan; compatible plans may retain motion events for up to 180 days. |
| Remote access and network | Both devices need network access for the documented paired arrangement. | Live access and alert response depend on Ring service and connectivity; the cited plan information does not establish performance during an outage. |
| Placement and power | Requires positioning a phone where its camera can see the target area; charging needs depend on the device and placement. | Existing Ring hardware remains in place; the cited plan information does not establish its power or placement needs. |
| Security fit | Useful to consider for basic viewing, but equivalent coverage, image quality, uptime, night performance, or deterrence is not established. | Live viewing and immediate alert response remain, while recorded-video review is tied to a compatible plan. |
Should you switch?
An old phone is worth trying if your goal is occasional live viewing of a small indoor area, the device is compatible, and you can accept a setup that depends on two network-connected devices. Test the feed from the place you plan to monitor before you rely on it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Keep Ring or choose a purpose-built security system if you depend on recorded event history, need a doorbell or outdoor-rated camera, or require coverage and reliability that this phone setup has not been shown to provide. You can also cancel Ring while continuing to use live view and immediate alerts, but that does not preserve access to recorded video.
