For preserving a lossless signal, wired headphones are the more dependable choice: Apple says Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless. But that does not mean every wired pair sounds better than every wireless pair. Headphone tuning, fit, digital signal processing (DSP), the source, and—in dual-mode models—the operating mode can matter as much as the connection. Choose for the sound and use you prefer, not the cable alone.
Wired vs. wireless sound quality at a glance
| What matters | Wired headphones | Wireless headphones |
|---|---|---|
| Signal path | A physical connection can carry lossless playback when the source, connection and headphones support it. | Bluetooth sends audio using a codec; Apple says Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless. |
| What you hear | Depends on the headphones’ drivers, tuning, fit and any active processing. | Depends on those same factors, plus the Bluetooth codec, device compatibility and connection settings. |
| Connection consistency | A cable avoids Bluetooth pairing, radio-link dropouts and codec mismatches. | Connection reliability and codec availability can vary with the devices, settings and radio conditions. |
| Setup | The source needs a matching connector; some high-resolution playback setups need a DAC. | The source and headphones need to support a compatible codec. Settings may affect sound quality or stability. |
| Convenience | The cable tethers you to the source. | No cable tether, but the headphones need power and use a wireless link. |
These are differences in connection and setup, not a universal ranking of how good the headphones sound. RTINGS notes that many listeners may notice little difference between wired and wireless listening, while some dual-mode headphones sound different across modes because their processing changes.

Can Bluetooth headphones play lossless audio?
A lossless track and a lossless connection are separate parts of the signal path. A music service may offer a lossless file, but sending it over Bluetooth does not by itself preserve every bit. Apple’s iPhone guidance explicitly says Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless. A wireless pair can still sound excellent; “not lossless” describes the transmission, not a verdict that the sound must be poor.

Codec support matters when choosing wireless equipment. Qualcomm says aptX requires support in both the transmitting device, such as a phone or laptop, and the receiving headphones. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 guide lists SBC, AAC and LDAC for Classic Audio A2DP, and LC3 for LE Audio. These are model-specific examples, not a complete list of codec support across headphones.

Check both devices, not just the codec logo
- Confirm that the exact phone, computer or other source supports the codec you want.
- Confirm that the exact headphone model supports that codec in the mode you plan to use.
- Check the device’s audio settings: on Sony’s WF-1000XM6, LDAC requires the relevant sound-quality setting, and the high-reliability setting does not support LDAC.
Sony describes LDAC on that model as transmitting approximately three times more data than SBC under specified settings: 990 kbps at 96/48 kHz or 909 kbps at 88.2/44.1 kHz. That is a codec data-rate comparison from Sony, not an independent listening test or a guarantee that every listener will hear an improvement. A higher-rate codec label alone is not proof of a perceptible difference.
Why a wired connection does not guarantee better sound
The connection is only one part of what reaches your ears. Driver design, frequency tuning, how the headphones fit, the recording and the playback device all affect the result. Wireless headphones may also apply DSP to shape sound or perform other processing. Wired headphones can have active electronics too.

Some headphones have different wired modes
On dual-mode headphones, “wired” can mean listening while the headphones are powered on or using them with power off. RTINGS notes that powered headphones may continue to use internal amplification and DSP over a cable; switching them off can bypass that processing and change their frequency response. A difference between these modes may reflect a change in tuning rather than one connection being inherently higher fidelity.
Wireless settings can trade sound quality for stability
Codec and connection preferences can change how a wireless link behaves. Sony’s support guidance describes a sound-quality priority that can make the connection less stable, and a stable-connection priority that favors reliability over sound quality. The available options and their effect depend on the connected devices.

When a DAC is needed for wired listening
A DAC converts digital audio into an analog signal for headphones. Whether you need an external one depends on your source device, headphone connection and target playback resolution; it is not a universal requirement for wired headphones.
Apple’s iPhone guide describes Apple Music lossless files from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz, and says an iPhone needs an external DAC for sample rates above 48 kHz. Those are Apple-specific playback details, not a general limit for other phones, computers or audio devices. Before buying a DAC, check whether your device already supports the connection and sample rate you intend to use. Track availability, streaming settings, network conditions and connected equipment also affect the resolution actually played.

Which should you choose?
Choose wired if
- You want a direct connection and predictable playback without Bluetooth pairing or radio-link issues.
- Lossless transmission is important to your setup.
- You are comfortable with a cable and have checked that your source has a compatible connector or the necessary adapter.
Choose wireless if
- Freedom of movement and convenience matter more than a cable-free signal path.
- You have checked codec support on both the source and headphones.
- You are willing to adjust sound-quality or stability settings to suit your listening environment.
In either case, compare the headphones’ sound signature and fit, not just their connection type or a high-resolution label. There is no universal audible winner across all models and listeners.
