How to Play a 3D DVD Rip on a TV, Computer, or VR Headset

A 3D rip’s format determines how to play it. Learn what to check for MVC, side-by-side, and top-and-bottom files on TVs, computers, projectors, and Quest.

To play a 3D rip, first identify how its two views are encoded—typically as MVC, side-by-side (SBS), or top-and-bottom—and use a player and display chain that support that format. On a 3D TV or projector, you may also need to select the matching 3D mode yourself. The term “DVD rip” is often used loosely: MVC guidance generally applies to video derived from Blu-ray 3D, not every file described as a 3D DVD rip.

Identify the rip’s 3D format first

Two files that both look like “3D movies” can require different playback paths. A Blu-ray 3D-derived rip may retain Multiview Video Coding (MVC), which carries separate views in a format a compatible player must decode. A converted file may instead place the views together in a packed layout:

  • Side-by-side (SBS): the left- and right-eye views appear next to each other.
  • Top-and-bottom: the views appear one above the other.

Check the file’s details, its source, or the player’s playback information before changing settings. If the picture appears split or doubled, the selected display mode may not match the file’s layout. MVC and SBS/top-and-bottom are not interchangeable instructions; confirm that the player handles the specific format. The 4XVR listing, for example, separately advertises MVC decoding and SBS and top-bottom playback modes for Quest: Meta Store listing for 4XVR Video Player.

Connect and set up a computer or other source

A computer connected to a TV is the playback source; the TV still needs to accept and display 3D. Sony’s guidance for the VAIO models it covers calls for compatible playback software, a 3D graphics controller, a suitable connection, and a 3D-capable external display. Those are model-specific requirements, not a universal specification for every current computer. Sony VAIO 3D playback guide

Connect the source to the 3D-capable TV using a suitable HDMI connection, then select the TV’s 3D format to match the content. LG’s instructions describe choosing the 3D shape that corresponds to what is on screen; Sony warns that a wrong format can leave a split or double image. Check every device in a projector chain

For a projector, verify both that the projector supports 3D and that any receiver between it and the source supports 3D pass-through. A compatible projector alone does not establish that the whole chain can carry the 3D signal. ViewSonic projector guidance

Account for TV apps and media servers

Format support and display mode are separate checks. Plex says its app cannot tell a television to enable 3D mode, so select that mode on the TV when needed. Plex also notes that content outside a TV’s supported media formats may need transcoding. Plex: supported media formats

Play it on a computer

A computer is not automatically a 3D display. The playback application must support the file’s encoding, and the graphics, output connection, and display must support the chosen 3D path. Requirements vary by computer model. Sony’s older VAIO guide describes a Blu-ray drive, 3D-capable graphics, playback software, and an external 3D display for its covered setup; HP likewise documents compatible playback software and display/output requirements for its supported systems. Use these as examples of dependencies, not as a checklist that applies to all modern PCs. Sony VAIO guide · HP support guidance

Do not assume that a player supports MVC just because it supports other 3D features. VLC 3.0’s release notes mention 360 video and 3D audio, but do not establish MVC 3D-rip playback. Check the chosen application’s current format documentation and test it with the exact file and display chain. VLC 3.0 release notes

Play it on a VR headset

For Meta Quest, the Meta Store listing for 4XVR Video Player advertises MVC decoding for Blu-ray 3D ISO, SSIF, MKV, M2TS, TS, and MTS files. It also lists SBS and top-bottom modes and local and network playback. These are claims for this app and platform; they do not show that every VR headset or player supports MVC. Troubleshoot a split, flat, or unplayable picture

  • The image is split or doubled: on a 3D TV, select the mode that matches the file’s SBS or top-and-bottom layout. A mismatched mode can produce this result.
  • The picture stays flat: check whether the TV or projector’s 3D mode needs to be enabled manually, and confirm that the player is outputting a format the display can use.
  • The player will not open the file or decode its 3D: establish whether it is MVC or packed SBS/top-and-bottom, then check the app’s documentation for that format. A container or filename alone does not prove MVC support.
  • A projector setup fails: check 3D capability and pass-through at each point in the chain, including an AV receiver.
  • Playback through Plex fails or looks 2D: check media-format compatibility and set the television’s 3D mode yourself; Plex does not activate it for the TV.

Choose a playback route by compatibility

Before settling on a device, compare the exact file format, whether the player decodes MVC or expects a packed layout, the display’s 3D capability and available modes, and any intervening receiver’s pass-through support. If you plan to stream rather than play a local file, also check that route’s format support. Compatibility depends on the particular app, device, and connection chain; verify the current documentation rather than relying on a general claim that a platform “supports 3D.”
