Choose wireless if you value freedom of movement and have confirmed that the headset’s specific connection method works with your console. Bluetooth on a headset does not, by itself, mean it can connect to a console.
Wired or wireless: the practical trade-off
| What matters | Wired | Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Often a 3.5 mm cable to a compatible controller; USB is another possibility on supported setups. | May use a USB transmitter, a console-specific radio such as Xbox Wireless, or another supported method. Bluetooth support must be checked separately. |
| Movement and cables | The cable connects you to the controller or console and can restrict movement or add cable clutter. | No headset cable running to the controller, which makes moving around easier. |
| Power | A passive 3.5 mm headset does not need its own battery charged. | Usually requires power for wireless operation; check the model’s charging requirements and battery estimate. |
| Setup | Simple when the headset plug and controller or console jack are compatible. | Depends on the headset’s transmitter or radio, the console, and the exact model version. |
Neither connection type is proven here to sound better or have lower latency in every case. Those outcomes depend on the headset and connection, and the manufacturer compatibility guidance cited below is not an apples-to-apples performance test.

When a wired headset makes more sense
A 3.5 mm headset is a practical choice when your controller has a compatible headphone jack. It avoids a wireless pairing step and, in passive wired use, headset charging. Microsoft says its Xbox Stereo Headset connects to an Xbox Wireless Controller through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack and requires no headset batteries (Microsoft’s Xbox Stereo Headset product page).

Check that the controller actually has the required jack and that the headset’s plug supports the audio and microphone functions you need. A cable can be inconvenient if you move around, and some older controllers or platform-specific setups may need an adapter. For example, Audeze says some older Xbox controllers may require an adapter when connecting its Mobius through 3.5 mm (Audeze’s console setup guide).

When wireless makes more sense
Wireless can reduce cable clutter and give you more freedom to move. The trade-off is that the headset must connect through a method supported by both the headset and your console, and wireless operation brings charging or battery considerations.
“Wireless” can mean different things: USB-transmitter wireless, a console-specific radio, or Bluetooth. Those methods are not interchangeable. Microsoft says its Xbox Wireless Headset pairs to Xbox consoles using Xbox Wireless without a dongle or base station, while Bluetooth is provided for PC or mobile use. It also supports simultaneous phone-and-console pairing (Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Headset product page).
Battery estimates are model-specific. Sony’s PS5 FAQ gives the PULSE 3D headset an estimate of up to 12 hours of wireless play; that figure is Sony’s stated estimate for that model, not a general wireless-headset benchmark (Sony’s PlayStation 5 FAQ). Audeze lists over 80 hours of wireless playback at 80 dBA for Maxwell; that is a manufacturer-stated specification for that product, not an independent comparison (Audeze Maxwell product page).

Can I use any Bluetooth gaming headset with a console?
No. Bluetooth capability alone does not establish console compatibility. Sony’s PlayStation 5 FAQ says third-party wireless headsets that use Bluetooth are not supported on PS5, while most USB and analog headsets are supported. Sony also says headsets that connect through a 3.5 mm jack, USB-A, or USB-C will work for 3D Audio. This is Sony’s published guidance, dated November 9, 2020; check the current guidance and the exact headset model before buying (Sony’s PlayStation 5 FAQ).
On Xbox, do not assume a headset’s Bluetooth feature is its console connection. Microsoft identifies Xbox Wireless as the Xbox pairing method for its Xbox Wireless Headset and describes Bluetooth for PC or mobile. Other headsets may use different supported connections, so confirm the model’s Xbox compatibility rather than relying on the word “Bluetooth.”

A product family can include versions with different connection methods. SteelSeries lists the Arctis 1 and Arctis 3 Console as wired 3.5 mm models, the Arctis 1 Wireless as USB wireless, and the Arctis 9X as using official Xbox Wireless. Its compatibility guidance also lists USB wireless Arctis models for PS5; these are details for the named models, not a rule for every headset (SteelSeries compatibility guidance).

Audeze says Maxwell’s PlayStation and Xbox versions both work over 3.5 mm, but the PlayStation version does not work on Xbox in low-latency wireless or USB mode because of hardware, firmware, and licensing differences. Audeze says the Xbox version’s USB dongle is not officially supported on PlayStation and may not work; it recommends buying the version supported for your console (Audeze Maxwell compatibility guidance).
Check these details before buying
- Identify your console and controller. Confirm the console generation and whether the controller has a usable 3.5 mm jack.
- Confirm the exact headset version. Look up compatibility for the named model and platform, not just the product family.
- Match the connection method. Verify whether the console supports that model’s 3.5 mm, USB, USB-transmitter wireless, or console-specific radio connection. Do not treat Bluetooth as proof of console support.
- Check microphone and chat features. Confirm that the supported connection carries the microphone and any chat controls or mixing features you need on that console.
- Consider power and comfort. For wireless, check charging needs and the manufacturer’s battery estimate. For either type, compare fit and weight using the exact model’s specifications.
- Check accessories and return terms. Buy an adapter or transmitter only if the headset or controller setup requires it and compatibility is confirmed. Review the seller’s return policy in case the connection does not work as expected.
