Wired vs. Battery-Powered Video Doorbells: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Wired doorbells need compatible power and chime wiring; battery models can work without it, but charging, chime support, and recording vary by model.

Choose a wired video doorbell if your existing doorbell wiring meets the exact model’s power requirements and its chime and recording features suit you. Choose a battery-powered model if wiring is missing or incompatible, or you want to avoid connecting the doorbell to it. Before deciding, check how the model handles charging, your indoor chime, and video recording: connecting a battery doorbell to wires does not necessarily give it every feature of a wired-only model.

Wired vs. battery-powered: the practical differences

Decision point Wired doorbell Battery-powered doorbell
Power at the door Requires compatible existing wiring. Voltage and transformer capacity vary by model, generation, and region; some installations may need a transformer upgrade. Google’s compatibility guidance gives requirements for specific Nest models. A model designed for battery-only operation can work without existing doorbell wiring. Confirm the product supports that mode. Google documents battery-only operation for the Nest Doorbell (battery).
Installation Can reuse a suitable doorbell system, but the wiring, transformer, chime, and regional requirements still need to match the device. Avoids connecting to doorbell wiring for power. Mounting and charging instructions remain model-specific.
Indoor chime A compatible wired setup may use the existing chime, subject to the model’s requirements. Behavior varies by model and installation mode. Google says its Nest Doorbell (battery) will not ring the existing wired chime in the documented configuration; Arlo describes an existing-chime option for its Essential Wire-Free model when hardwired.
Recording Do not assume recording capabilities from the power method; check the exact model’s specifications. Battery models can have feature limits that remain even when connected to wires. Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) cannot continuously record 24/7 video history on battery or wired power.
Ongoing upkeep The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a general maintenance schedule for wired doorbells. Battery operation means keeping the rechargeable battery charged. Runtime and charging frequency depend on the model and use; the cited guidance does not establish a universal interval.

Check wiring compatibility before choosing a wired model

“Wired” is not a universal voltage standard. Google’s compatibility page lists the Nest Doorbell (battery) at 8–24 V AC and gives distinct requirements for wired models by generation and region. For example, the North American wired models shown have their own 16–24 V AC requirements. Treat these as Google model-specific specifications, not requirements for all video doorbells. Check Google’s compatibility table or the selected manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model.

Also verify transformer capacity and chime compatibility, not just voltage. Google notes that some homes may need a transformer upgrade for a wired Nest installation. If your current system does not meet the device’s requirements, a battery model that supports battery-only operation may avoid that wiring issue; do not assume a generic adapter or transformer will solve it.

Battery-powered does not always mean wireless in every mode

Some doorbells offer more than one power option. Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) can run on its rechargeable battery alone or connect to doorbell wires for continuous charging. Arlo describes its Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) as supporting rechargeable-battery or wired installation, with wiring used for continuous power. These examples show why the exact model’s instructions matter: a battery-equipped product may accept wiring without becoming equivalent to a wired-only model.

For instance, Google’s Nest Doorbell (battery) cannot continuously record 24/7 video history, whether it is running from its battery or connected to wires. Check the recording and video-history specifications for the specific doorbell rather than treating a wired connection as an automatic feature upgrade. Google’s Nest Doorbell specifications describe this limitation.

Will it ring your existing indoor chime?

Do not infer chime behavior from the words “wired” or “battery-powered.” Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) will not ring an existing wired chime in the documented configuration. Arlo, by contrast, says hardwiring its Essential Wire-Free Video Doorbell can allow an existing chime to ring; its FAQ identifies 8–24 V AC wiring for that model. These are model-specific examples, not a guarantee that one brand’s wiring or chime behavior applies to another. When an indoor power adapter may help

Google documents an indoor power adapter as an option for some Nest installations, including circumstances where existing wiring is not suitable. The adapter is sold separately where available, and Google says it is not weatherproof: do not plug it into an outdoor outlet. Confirm the accessory is intended for your exact doorbell and region, and follow its installation instructions. Google’s indoor power adapter instructions explain its use and limitations.

Which type should you choose?

Choose a wired model if…

  • Your existing wiring and transformer meet the exact doorbell’s requirements.
  • You want to use the existing indoor chime and have confirmed the model supports it in your installation configuration.
  • The model’s recording features meet your needs; verify these separately from its power requirements.

Choose a battery-powered model if…

  • Your home has no doorbell wiring, or the existing system does not meet the selected model’s requirements.
  • You prefer not to connect the doorbell to existing wiring for power.
  • You are comfortable recharging the battery and have checked the model’s chime and recording limits.

If you are considering a model that supports both battery and wired installation, compare its specifications in each mode. A wire connection might provide continuous charging or enable a chime without removing other battery-model limitations.
