Ethernet can be the better choice for a stationary device when you can run a cable and want a direct local network link. It does not guarantee faster internet: performance still depends on your internet service, router or switch, device interface and the speed of the connected ports. Wi-Fi trades a cable for mobility, and modern Wi-Fi has narrowed some of the historical performance differences.
What wired internet changes
Ethernet connects a device to a router or switch with a physical cable. The device and network equipment both need compatible Ethernet ports, or the device may need an adapter. Cisco describes the typical setup as a cable running between a router’s Ethernet port and a computer or another device (Cisco’s wired-versus-wireless explainer).

That cable replaces Wi-Fi for the device’s local network connection. It also tethers the device: Cisco calls this out directly, saying, “The biggest disadvantage is that your device is tethered to a router.” (Cisco)

Not as a universal rule. Ethernet’s available bandwidth is bounded by the connected port and the slowest relevant component in the path. A cable cannot make a device, router, switch or internet plan exceed its own limits. Cisco describes an Ethernet access link as providing bandwidth up to the speed of its connected port (Cisco’s Ethernet switch explainer).

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Wi-Fi clients connected to an access point share its wireless bandwidth. Their actual connection can also vary with signal and radio conditions. A wired link avoids that wireless last hop, but the available sources do not establish a universal latency or stability advantage or provide a like-for-like household speed measurement. If the limiting factor is a slow broadband plan or upstream service, plugging in over Ethernet will not remove that bottleneck.
Wi-Fi 6 and other advances have narrowed some older speed and security differences between wireless and wired networking, so the useful comparison is between the particular equipment, environment and task—not a timeless claim that one is always faster. See Cisco’s discussion of wired and wireless networks. Ethernet and Wi-Fi can also complement each other rather than serve as mutually exclusive choices (Ethernet Alliance).

Which connection suits your device?
| Consideration | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | The device is tethered to a cable. | The device can connect within the wireless signal’s coverage. |
| Local connection | Physical link with capacity up to the connected port’s speed. | Connected clients share the access point’s wireless bandwidth. |
| Interference and consistency | Avoids the wireless radio link on the device’s last hop. | Radio performance can vary with signal and local conditions. |
| Setup | Requires cable routing and compatible ports. | Does not require a cable run to each client. |
| Security | A physical link avoids exposing that client link over Wi-Fi radio; overall network security still depends on configuration and access controls. | Wireless security depends on configuration and current security practices. |
Desktop PCs, consoles and other stationary devices
Ethernet is worth considering when the device stays in one place, a cable route is practical, and you want a direct local link. It may be especially convenient for a desktop or console that is already near the router or switch. It is not a promise of a particular speed or gaming improvement; those depend on the whole connection and equipment.

Wi-Fi is usually the more practical fit when you carry the device around or need to connect in different rooms. Its mobility is a central benefit, while routing a cable to every changing location can be inconvenient or impractical.

What to check before wiring a device
- Device interface: Check whether the device has an Ethernet port and what speed it supports. A laptop without one may need a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
- Router or switch port: Confirm the port’s supported speed. The link is limited by the slowest relevant component, not just the cable.
- Cable route: Make sure the cable can reach without creating an awkward or unsafe run.
- Available LAN ports: If the router does not have enough ports for your cabled devices, an Ethernet switch can add connection points. A switch does not increase the internet speed included with your service. Cisco explains the role of a switch and its access ports in its Ethernet switch guide.
The practical equipment may be just an Ethernet cable. An adapter or switch is conditional on the device’s ports and the number of available network ports; no particular product model or premium specification is established here.

If it is a stationary computer and you can run a cable, trying Ethernet is a reasonable way to use a physical local link. First check the Ethernet interfaces at both ends and whether the connection is limited by your broadband service rather than Wi-Fi. Keep Wi-Fi for devices that need freedom to move; many homes can use both, with wired links for fixed devices and wireless links for mobile ones.
