The Winix 5500-2 is still a capable option for a medium-to-large room if you find a suitable unit: it has straightforward controls, a remote, replaceable filters, and strong particle-cleaning results in independent testing. The trade-offs are loud maximum-speed operation, no app, ongoing filter upkeep, and reported discontinuation in the U.S. and Canada once remaining inventory sells through. Room-size claims vary by source, so compare the figures and methods below rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Is the Winix 5500-2 worth buying?
It can be, especially if you value simple controls and a remote more than app connectivity, and can verify the purifier’s condition, filter supply, and warranty before buying. Independent measurements support its ability to move air and reduce particles, but performance depends on fan speed: the highest setting is substantially louder than the low setting.

For a purchase decision, weigh the room’s size against the airflow you are willing to hear, then check that replacement Filter H sets are available. The model’s reported regional discontinuation makes seller and warranty verification particularly important.

There is a documented difference in published room-size figures. Winix America’s March 2025 manual lists a verified room size of 370 sq ft, while HouseFresh and Tom’s Guide use 360 sq ft. The manual and review figures should not be silently merged: room recommendations can depend on the standard or calculation used.
#1 Best Overall
- 𝐀𝐇𝐀𝐌 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝟑92 𝐬𝐪 𝐟𝐭.: Also cleans rooms up to 1,882 sq ft in 1 hour (941 sq ft in 30 minutes, 627 sq ft in 20 minutes, 470 sq ft in 15 minutes)
- 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐱 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐇𝐄𝐏𝐀: Captures 99.99%* of airborne allergens including pollen, dust, smoke, and pet dander, as small as 0.01 microns
- 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐝𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫: Reduces VOCs and household odors from cooking, pets, and smoke. It is designed to catch airborne particles found indoors, which also helps prolong the True HEPA Filter life

- 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Visual indicator displays real-time air quality in the room with LED lights
Airflow figures also describe different measurements. HouseFresh reports AHAM CADR ratings of 232 CFM for smoke, 243 CFM for dust, and 246 CFM for pollen, and associates those figures with 4.8 air changes per hour in a 360 sq ft room. RTINGS’ separate Test Bench measurement is PM1.0 CADR: 244 CFM at maximum fan speed, with a recommended area of 381 sq ft, and 143 CFM at a setting capped at 45 dBA, with a recommended area of 223 sq ft. These ratings and area recommendations use different methods and are not direct substitutes.
In practical terms, a larger room is more likely to need a faster, noisier setting for stronger air turnover. If you plan to run the unit in a bedroom or workspace, consider the quieter-setting airflow as well as the maximum-speed result.

How well does it clean air, and how noisy is it?
RTINGS’ July 16, 2026 update, using Test Bench 1.3.1, reports PM1.0 CADR of 414 m³/h (244 CFM) at maximum fan and 243 m³/h (143 CFM) at a setting capped at 45 dBA. RTINGS measured 32.4 dBA at the lowest fan speed and 58.8 dBA at the highest. Tom’s Guide reports its own measurements of 35.3 dB at low speed and 59.8 dB at high speed. These are reviewer-specific measurements, not a single guaranteed noise specification.

HouseFresh tested the purifier in a 728 cubic-foot room using incense smoke and PurpleAir Zen sensors. It reports reaching PM1 zero in 23 minutes with PlasmaWave on and 24 minutes with it off at top speed. At speed 2, its reported times were 45 minutes with PlasmaWave on and 46 minutes with it off. Those results describe HouseFresh’s room and test setup, not a guaranteed clearing time in another home.

What filters does it use, and how often do they need replacing?
Winix specifies Filter H, SKU 116130, as the replacement set. Winix Europe describes the set as a carbon pellet filter plus an H13 HEPA filter and recommends replacing the set every 12 months. Check the current owner’s manual and the package compatibility details when ordering, and confirm stock and price at purchase time.
The purifier’s physical stack consists of a pre-filter, carbon filter, and HEPA filter. Winix markets a four-stage system that also includes PlasmaWave; RTINGS counts three physical filtration layers and lists the device’s HEPA-certified field as “No.” That distinction matters: the product should not be described as a whole-device HEPA-certified purifier on the basis of its filter description alone.

RTINGS says the HEPA element is not washable, and advises rinsing the carbon filter without soap and allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours. Follow the current manual for your unit’s cleaning and replacement instructions.
Can you turn PlasmaWave off, and what about ozone?
Yes. PlasmaWave can be switched off. RTINGS reports no significant effect on its measured purification performance when it was disabled; HouseFresh found a one-minute difference in its top-speed PM1 test and a one-minute difference at speed 2.

Winix’s manual states: “This product complies with the maximum allowable concentration of ozone of 0.050 parts per million by volume (ppmv) in a 24-h period.” That is the manufacturer’s compliance statement, not a claim of zero ozone. RTINGS characterizes PlasmaWave as bipolar ionization that produces trace ozone.
What controls and features does it have?
RTINGS lists an air-quality sensor, Auto mode, remote control, timer, five fan-speed entries, and an air-quality indicator whose colors reflect status. It does not support an app. RTINGS also says Auto mode does not operate while Sleep Mode is active.
HouseFresh notes that settings do not persist after a power loss, including the PlasmaWave setting. If you want PlasmaWave to remain off, check its status after power is restored.
Is the Winix 5500-2 discontinued?
HouseFresh reports that it contacted Winix and confirmed the 5500-2 and 5300-2 would be discontinued in the U.S. and Canada after inventory ran out. That report does not establish current stock or availability in other countries. Before buying, confirm that the seller has the unit, identify whether it is new, refurbished, or used, and ask the manufacturer and seller whether that specific unit and location qualify for warranty coverage.
Tom’s Guide lists a two-year limited warranty, but the available information does not establish whether residual-stock, refurbished, or used units remain eligible. Verify coverage directly for the particular sale rather than assuming the listed term applies.
