It targets some of the most common annoyances of these devices: settings that reset, controls that stop working after sleep, awkward game management, and a desktop that was built for a mouse. The developer’s own goal, in the release notes, is: “a setting should do what it says, stay set, and keep working after sleep or after your controller reconnects.”
That is a developer claim. Windows Central’s Adam Hales, writing on September 28, 2026, reported that the update solved his issues on an Xbox Ally X. That is one reviewer’s experience, not controlled testing. Two hotfixes followed within days. This article separates what the release does from what has actually been shown.

What Winhanced is
Winhanced is software, not hardware. It is a Windows application that makes a handheld easier to use with a controller. Its official overview describes:

The compatibility list in the March 2, 2025 “Winhanced Early Access” announcement named the ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, the OneXFly F1, and Steam Deck running Windows. It described MSI Claw support as limited. That list is more than a year old and is not a complete current compatibility matrix. Check support for your exact model before installing. That applies especially to newer devices such as the Xbox Ally X, which that list predates.

What 0.9.9.9 adds
Social and library features
- Friend cards and messaging. The release notes say you can message friends inside Winhanced. Status panels can show a friend’s current game and related details.
- Platform integrations. Windows Central lists improved Discord, Steam, Xbox and PlayStation integrations.
- Collections and Discord server browser. Windows Central says user-created collections and a controller-navigable Discord server browser were Early Access features in the version it covered.
- Game theme music. Also noted by Windows Central.
PC streaming through a companion app
The notes describe a Streaming Companion that you install on your host gaming PC. The handheld can then browse games hosted there, stream a single game or the whole desktop, and share keyboard/mouse and clipboard functions. Moonlight is named as the app that presents the stream.
This is not cloud gaming. The game runs on your own PC. In the documented setup, both devices sit on the same home network. Wake-on-LAN, if you want to wake the host remotely, must be enabled separately in the host PC’s BIOS and network settings.
Updates and downloads
- Windows updates inside Winhanced. You can install them with one button or individually. Categories are sorted the way Windows sorts them. Windows Central also lists improved driver detection.
- Epic downloads. They can resume and fetch only changed files instead of the whole game again.
- GOG downloads. They can resume.
Handheld-specific settings and profiles
The notes add battery charge limits and graphics memory settings. Per-game profiles can retain different settings for battery use, plugged-in use, or use with an external graphics card. These include the game’s own graphics settings.

Which handheld frustrations it targets
The main target is unreliable device control. The notes say Winhanced and its background service used to compete for controls. Each of these now has a single responsible component:
- button assignment and mapping
- RGB lighting
- mouse mode
- the built-in controller
- brightness
The notes also describe changed Xbox Game Bar behavior while Device Control is on.
Per-game profiles address a second annoyance: re-adjusting power and graphics settings whenever you switch between battery and a dock. Resumable downloads and in-app Windows updates address a third, which is leaving the controller-friendly interface for a mouse-driven desktop to do maintenance.

Windows Central reports substantial hardware-related bug fixes and better consistency across supported handhelds. It attributes the “1.0 level” description of device consistency to the developer. It is not a measured benchmark. No source reviewed here includes controlled performance or battery tests, or head-to-head comparisons with Xbox Mode, Armoury Crate or other launchers.

Two patches followed the main release, so check which build you are running.

The developer wrote that “This hotfix was important as it aims to address several concerns that came up with Sunday’s release.” It describes:

- fixes to status-bar volume, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth behavior
Those are the same areas the headline release promised to stabilize. That suggests the first build did not fully deliver on sleep and reconnection for everyone.
0.9.92
Theme music had stopped working on some devices. The 0.9.91 hotfix shipped without a tool the feature needs, and 0.9.92 restores it. This build also adds:
- in-app issue reporting with logs
- offline FAQ access
- privacy controls for locally saved logs
- more flexibility with external-GPU power
- Spanish localization corrections
Read together, the sequence points to a substantial update with active follow-up, not a final cure for every handheld quirk. Rapid patching is a good sign for support. It also shows that device-specific problems were still surfacing after launch.
Should you try it?
- Likely worth trying if you own a handheld on the vendor’s supported list and your main pain is settings that reset or controls that fail after sleep. Install the latest hotfix build, not just 0.9.9.9.
- Worth a closer look if you want local streaming from a desktop. You need your own host PC, the companion app, Moonlight and a shared home network.
- Proceed carefully on an MSI Claw, where support was listed as limited, or on any model not named by the developer.
Before you rely on it, test the failure cases that matter to you. Put the device to sleep and wake it. Disconnect and reconnect a controller. Switch between battery and plugged-in with a profile applied. If a problem persists, the in-app issue reporter in 0.9.92 is the developer’s intended route for reporting it.
