Whether you can add a second network port depends on your exact mini PC. No universal upgrade exists. The most common internal route is an M.2 Ethernet card, and it only works if the slot exposes the right PCIe connection, takes the card’s key and size, fits in the chassis, and is accepted by the firmware and operating system. If your machine can’t do that, a USB Ethernet adapter or a model with two built-in ports is the practical fallback.
Your options, compared
1. M.2 Ethernet adapter (internal)
This is possible when a free slot and a compatible card are confirmed. One community thread, a r/homelab discussion about adding a second NIC to a Dell OptiPlex 3060 Micro, mentions an M.2 A+E-key Ethernet adapter. It is one user’s reported approach. It is not a compatibility list, and it says nothing about other models.

Check the key, length, PCIe lane availability, any BIOS or firmware restrictions, the card’s chipset and OS driver, chassis clearance, and how the RJ45 jack will reach the outside of the case.
2. USB Ethernet adapter (external)
This is the fallback when no suitable internal slot exists. We found no authoritative source that establishes the performance or suitability of any particular adapter, so check two things yourself. First, confirm the adapter’s chipset has driver support for your OS. Second, plug it into a USB port fast enough for your target link speed. Don’t assume router-grade reliability or full throughput.

3. A vendor expansion module or exposed PCIe connector
Some systems offer a vendor-specific module or expansion header. Use one only if the manufacturer documents it for your exact model. Nothing here shows such an option exists for mini PCs in general.
4. Buy a model with two Ethernet ports
If you haven’t bought a machine yet, this is the simplest route. Qotom’s Q10900S6 S13 series lists two 2.5G RJ45 ports. ASRock Industrial’s 25.2H catalog shows a configuration with one 2.5GbE and one 1GbE port. These show that dual-port models exist. They don’t mean either one suits your needs.

Why “it has an M.2 slot” isn’t enough
M.2 is a connector family, not a guarantee of function. The ASRock catalog lists Key E 2230 sockets and Key B 3042/3052 sockets, each with its own specified interface. The Qotom Q10900S6 S13 has an M-key 2280 PCIe 3.0 x1 storage socket and a separate E-key 2230 Wi-Fi socket. Neither listing certifies an Ethernet card for any slot. A slot can be wired for SATA only, for USB only, or for a particular device class. Some firmware also restricts what it accepts.

Compatibility checklist before you buy
- Record the exact model and hardware revision.
- Read the manufacturer’s specifications or service manual. Confirm each slot’s key, length, electrical interface, and whether it is already occupied.
- Check that the case has room for the card and for an Ethernet connector or cable.
- Identify the card’s chipset and confirm a driver exists for your OS and version. Vendor support pages help, such as ASUS’s guidance for NUC LAN ports, but they apply to that product line.
- Confirm the target speed works end to end: NIC, switch or router, cabling, and your network service.
- Plan a way to restore the system if the internal install goes wrong, such as a backup or a spare boot drive. Follow the manufacturer’s disassembly instructions, because no single manual covers all mini PCs.
Installing and verifying
- Shut the mini PC down and unplug it.
- Open the case following the maker’s service instructions.
- Fit and secure only a card confirmed for your host.
- Reassemble, connect the network cable, and boot.
- Look for a second adapter in your OS’s network settings or Device Manager.
- If it isn’t recognized, install the driver from the NIC or system manufacturer.
Troubleshooting
The adapter appears but has no link
Check the cable, the switch or router port, and negotiation settings. Check the driver too. Also confirm the connected equipment supports the speed you want.

A second port is only hardware
A second NIC doesn’t create routing, firewalling, bridging, or failover. Those come from OS or network configuration. Decide the NIC’s role first: a second LAN, a WAN link, a lab interface, or a separate network segment.
