Dedicated-server administration is handled through the hosting control panel and JSON configuration files. Difficulty is chosen when a world is created and is locked by the normal in-game workflow afterward.
For a new world, select one of Windrose’s four presets or use Captain’s Choice to edit individual multipliers. For an existing save, make a backup before considering any host-specific file operation; the supported player-facing answer is to create a new world. A separate community mod called Windrose+ adds authenticated RCON commands with the wp. prefix, but those commands are not vanilla features.

Does vanilla Windrose have admin commands?
No. In the Early Access state documented in 2026, Windrose does not expose a built-in chat-command system, usable developer console, RCON service, or in-game administrator login. PC Gamer described the launch state as having no Windrose admin commands, while RespawnHost reported in July 2026 that there was no /kick, /ban, restart command, RCON, or in-game admin login.

That also means there is no official vanilla command list for teleporting, spawning items, forcing a save, changing a player’s permissions, or restarting a server from chat. A web page that lists those commands without identifying a specific mod and version is not documenting the vanilla game. The absence applies to both a dedicated server and a normal player-hosted world; changing the hosting provider does not create commands that the game itself does not implement.

What happens when you try a supposed command?
The text may be treated as ordinary chat, ignored, or returned as an unknown command. It will not become a working moderation or administration action simply because it starts with a slash or a tilde. Use the panel and configuration files described below for a vanilla server.
How dedicated-server administration works
Windrose’s documented dedicated-server model is file- and panel-based rather than live-command-based. A host’s panel normally provides the lifecycle and file operations you need:
- Start, stop, and restart the process.
- Schedule automatic restarts.
- Create and restore backups.
- Read server logs.
- Edit the server’s JSON files.
PC Gamer identifies two important files in the server’s R5 directory structure. ServerDescription.json is in the server’s R5 root. WorldDescription.json is inside the save or world directory.

Stop the server before editing either file. RespawnHost warns that changes are applied after a restart and that files should not be edited while the process is running. The safe sequence is to stop, back up, edit, start, and then verify the result in the panel and in-game. Do not assume that a file saved successfully means the game accepted every value; malformed JSON or an unsupported value can prevent a world from loading or cause the host to revert it.
How to control access without kick or ban commands
Because vanilla Windrose has no live moderation commands, access control is configured before players connect. In ServerDescription.json, set a server name, decide whether password protection is enabled, assign a password, and set the maximum player count. The invite code is also stored there.

Invalidate an old invite
If an invite code has been shared too widely, change the invite-code value in ServerDescription.json, save the file while the server is stopped, and restart. The practical effect is to invalidate the old code; players who know only the previous code should no longer be able to use it. Give the replacement code only to the people you want to admit.
Use a password as the first barrier
Enable password protection and distribute the password through a private channel. A password does not remove an already connected player, so combine it with a restart when you need to clear the current session and then issue the new credentials. Set the maximum player count to the number your group can support instead of relying on a command to deny later connections.

There is no documented vanilla /kick or /ban action. The available administrative response is operational: stop or restart the server from the panel, change the password or invite code, and give the new credentials only to approved players. This is less granular than a moderation console, so agree on a restart and credential-rotation procedure before opening a public server.
How to change Windrose difficulty
Creating a new world
The supported player-facing workflow is the Create World or Select Difficulty screen:
- Open the world-creation flow rather than loading an existing save.
- Choose one of the four presets: Calm Waters, High Seas, Storm’s Edge, or Captain’s Choice.
- If you choose Captain’s Choice, adjust the individual sliders and switches shown by the game.
- Review the combat, enemy, ship, boarding, co-op, quest, and exploration options before confirming.
- Create the world. The selected values become the settings for that save.
The Windrose Wiki describes High Seas as the intended baseline preset. That description is a design reference, not a promise that it will feel identical for every group, because player count and custom multipliers change the experience.

Changing an existing save
Windrose Wiki states that settings are locked at world creation and that difficulty cannot be changed mid-save through the in-game world-settings workflow. If you need a different preset, create a new world and select it before the save is generated.

A dedicated host may expose the underlying WorldDescription.json file, but editing a generated save is a controlled configuration operation, not a documented in-game feature. Back up the world, stop the server, make one change at a time, restart, and check the logs and world behavior. Do not promise that changing a live save will work, and do not overwrite the original backup until the result has been verified. A host or a version-specific mod may provide its own migration procedure; follow that provider’s instructions rather than assuming that a preset change is portable between saves.
What the difficulty settings control
The presets are combinations of individual controls. Captain’s Choice exposes those controls directly, and the server file uses named values for the numeric multipliers. PC Gamer recorded the following defaults and ranges in 2026:

A value of 1.0 is the documented default for the first five multipliers; it is not a universal recommendation for every group. Raising a health multiplier makes the relevant target take longer to defeat, while raising a damage multiplier makes mistakes more expensive. Change one category at a time if you are tuning a server so that you can identify which adjustment solved a difficulty problem.
Combat Difficulty
The separate Combat Difficulty setting accepts Easy, Normal, or Hard. The Windrose Wiki describes it as controlling boss encounter difficulty and general enemy aggression. It is broader than merely increasing an enemy’s hit points, so a group that wants tougher bosses without dramatically lengthening every fight should evaluate this setting separately from the health multipliers.

Exploration and progression options
Immersive exploration disables map markers for points of interest. It changes how players find locations rather than how much damage enemies deal. Shared quest progress can automatically complete a co-op quest for players who already have that quest active. Decide whether your group wants those convenience and discovery rules before creating the world, because they are part of the world configuration rather than an on-demand command.
Choosing among the four presets

The preset names alone do not tell you the exact multiplier for every field. Before creating a world, inspect the displayed sliders and switches. Record your chosen values if you are preparing a dedicated server so that a later backup or rebuild can reproduce the same configuration.

Windrose+ is a community server mod that adds an RCON and web-console command layer. It is not included with vanilla Windrose, is not an official in-game admin system, and should not be treated as guaranteed across every Early Access version.
WindrosePlus documentation says its commands must be executed through RCON. Console commands are not supported because calling the dedicated server’s console hook can crash the server. In other words, installing the mod does not make typing into a local game-console window safe; use the authentication and RCON path documented by the mod.

The project also documents authenticated REST/RCON access, including a POST /api/rcon endpoint. The host, port, credentials, and authentication method come from the Windrose+ installation and hosting environment; do not copy credentials into a public guide or expose the endpoint without access controls.
Survival Servers likewise distinguishes vanilla servers from Windrose+ and recommends beginning with wp.help when the mod and RCON console are installed. Treat every wp.* example as mod-specific. If a command is rejected, check the installed Windrose+ version, RCON authentication, endpoint, and server logs before assuming that vanilla Windrose supports it.
Safe procedure for editing a hosted world
- Record the current state. Note the world name, server name, player limit, difficulty preset, and any custom multipliers. This gives you a rollback reference.
- Stop the server. Use the hosting panel’s stop action and wait until the process is fully offline.
- Create a backup. Back up the world/save directory and keep the original configuration files separately.
- Edit the correct file. Use
ServerDescription.jsonfor identity and access fields; useWorldDescription.jsonfor world and difficulty fields. - Preserve valid JSON. Keep quotation marks, commas, braces, field names, and numeric formats intact. Do not add comments to JSON unless the host explicitly supports them.
- Start the server. Restart through the panel so the process reads the changed files.
- Verify. Check startup logs, join with an administrator account, confirm the world name and access settings, and test one changed gameplay condition before inviting everyone back.
- Roll back if necessary. Stop the server, restore the backup, and restart if the world fails to load or the values are not accepted.
Do not edit while the server is running. A running process can overwrite your changes on shutdown or leave the save and configuration out of sync.
Troubleshooting common problems
“Why does /kick or /ban do nothing?”
Those are not documented vanilla commands. Use password and invite-code rotation in ServerDescription.json, then restart through the panel. If you require live moderation, evaluate a version-compatible community mod that explicitly provides RCON functionality.
“I changed a difficulty slider, but the existing world is unchanged.”
The in-game workflow locks difficulty at world creation. Confirm that you edited the intended world and that the server was stopped before the file change. If the save was already generated, the reliable supported route is a new world; a host-specific migration may or may not work.
“The server still uses the old password or invite.”
Confirm that you changed ServerDescription.json, not WorldDescription.json, and that the server completed a restart after the edit. Check the panel’s active file path and logs. Existing connections may remain until the restart or until players reconnect with the new credentials.
“The server will not start after editing JSON.”
Stop trying additional changes. Restore the last known-good backup, start the server, and inspect the logs. Then reapply one valid change at a time. A missing comma, an extra quote, a misspelled field name, or a number outside the documented range can invalidate the configuration.
“Windrose+ says the command is unavailable.”
Verify that the mod is installed on the dedicated server, that you are connected through RCON rather than an unsupported console hook, and that authentication is valid. Run wp.help through the documented RCON route. Command names and behavior can change with mod and Early Access versions.
