To let Xbox and Windows Bedrock players join a Minecraft Java server, install Geyser on the Java server and expose its Bedrock listener over UDP—normally port 19132. Add Floodgate if Bedrock players should authenticate with their Microsoft/Xbox accounts without purchasing Java Edition.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Windows Bedrock can enter the server address directly. Xbox console does not offer the same custom-server form, so console players need a currently working third-party workaround such as BedrockConnect, or a supported hosted/Realm route. The workaround and its DNS instructions can change after console or game updates.

What this crossplay setup actually does
Xbox and Windows Bedrock players cannot normally speak the Java Edition network protocol. Geyser sits between the Bedrock client and the Java server, translating Bedrock traffic so both editions can use the same Java-world server. The Geyser project describes itself as a program that allows Minecraft: Bedrock Edition clients to join Minecraft: Java Edition servers.
The Java server remains the authority for the world, plugins, permissions and saved data. Geyser does not convert a Java server into a Bedrock server; it provides a Bedrock-compatible connection endpoint. Xbox and Windows players still use the Bedrock edition of Minecraft, while Java players continue connecting through the normal Java address and port.

Where Floodgate fits
Geyser can use normal online authentication when every Bedrock player also owns Java Edition. Floodgate is an optional companion that accepts Xbox Live authentication for Bedrock users, so they can join without buying a paid Java Edition account. Floodgate does not eliminate the need for a Microsoft/Xbox account or a legitimate Bedrock copy of the game.
Requirements and decisions before installation
- A running Java Edition server on a supported platform such as Paper, Spigot, Fabric or NeoForge, or a proxy supported by Geyser.
- A Geyser plugin or mod that matches the server platform and the current Minecraft version it emulates.
- A reachable Bedrock listener using UDP. Port 19132 is the usual default, but your host may require another unused UDP port.
- Router port forwarding and a Windows Firewall rule if the Java server is hosted on a home Windows computer.
- Microsoft accounts, current game versions and enabled multiplayer permissions for every participant.
- The applicable online multiplayer subscription for Xbox console play.
Decide whether all Bedrock players already own Java Edition. If they do, keep Geyser’s normal online authentication. If they should join using Xbox Live identities without a Java purchase, install Floodgate and select its authentication mode in Geyser’s configuration.

| Option | Best for | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Windows server | Owners who need full control of files, plugins and network settings | You must maintain Java, the server software, Geyser, Floodgate, backups, Windows Firewall and router forwarding. Your home connection and public IP affect availability. |
| Managed Minecraft host | Players who want a web panel, easier updates and provider-managed uptime | Confirm that the plan permits Geyser and Floodgate, exposes an external UDP port, supports your chosen server platform and provides usable backups. |
| Proxy-based network | Networks with multiple Java servers or a lobby | Install and configure Geyser at the proxy or at the correct backend according to the proxy’s supported arrangement. Every Bedrock-facing listener still needs a reachable UDP endpoint. |
Do not assume that a host offering a Java port automatically offers Bedrock connectivity. Ask specifically whether external UDP traffic is supported and whether the current Geyser and Floodgate builds are allowed.

Install Geyser on the Java server
1. Prepare the Java server
- Install and start a supported Java server platform—Paper, Spigot, Fabric, NeoForge or a compatible proxy.
- Start it once so it creates its normal directory structure, then stop it cleanly before adding extensions.
- Record the Java server’s existing address and port. Java players will continue using that endpoint; Bedrock players will use Geyser’s separate UDP listener.
2. Add the matching Geyser component
- Download the Geyser plugin for a plugin-based server or the Geyser mod for a supported mod loader from the project’s current official release channel.
- Place the plugin in the server’s plugin directory, or install the mod alongside the other mods. A proxy installation belongs in the proxy’s supported extension directory.
- Start the server and inspect the console for a successful Geyser load. Stop and correct any version or dependency error before inviting players.
Geyser generates a configuration file after its first successful start. The exact folder name depends on the platform, but it is normally inside the server or plugin directory and includes a Geyser configuration file.
3. Install Floodgate only when you need it
- Install the Floodgate component that matches the same platform and Minecraft version as Geyser.
- Restart the server so Floodgate creates its files.
- Open Geyser’s generated configuration and change the authentication setting to Floodgate’s mode. Leave normal online authentication selected when every Bedrock user owns Java Edition.
Do not switch authentication modes casually on a live server. Make a backup first and tell existing players which account type the server expects.
Configure the Bedrock listener
Open Geyser’s generated configuration and locate the Bedrock listener section. Current builds commonly label the relevant entries as the Bedrock address and port. Bind to the intended interface and choose an unused UDP port.

| Setting | Recommended value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock address | The interface that should accept Bedrock traffic; use the host’s appropriate listening address | A listener bound only to localhost cannot accept players from another machine or the internet. |
| Bedrock port | 19132 unless the host requires another port |
Bedrock clients need this UDP port. It must be unused and reachable from outside the server network. |
| Authentication | Normal online mode, or Floodgate mode when configured | The mode must match whether Bedrock users authenticate with Java ownership or Xbox Live through Floodgate. |
Save the file and restart the server after changing the listener. Do not share the selected UDP port with voice chat, query, or another service that also requires it. A duplicate binding can prevent Geyser from starting or make connections appear intermittent.
Open the network for a self-hosted Windows server
Allow the port in Windows Firewall
- Open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.
- Create an inbound rule for the selected Bedrock port and choose UDP, not TCP.
- Allow the connection for the network profiles you actually use, applying the narrowest profile that fits your setup.
- Keep the rule tied to the server’s intended port; do not open unrelated ports just because the Java server uses a different protocol.
Forward the UDP port on the router
- Give the server computer a stable local address, such as a DHCP reservation, so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the chosen external UDP port to that computer’s local address and the same internal UDP port.
- Apply the change and confirm that no other device or service already uses the port.
- Test from a network outside your home connection. A test performed only from inside the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is broken.
Remote players use your public IPv4 address or a hostname that resolves to it. Local players can use the server’s LAN address. If your provider uses changing public addresses, use a supported hostname service or tunnel, but verify that it carries UDP traffic; an ordinary web-only tunnel is not enough.
Test Geyser’s endpoint
After the listener, firewall and router are configured, run Geyser’s connection test from the server console:

geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>
Replace the placeholders with the address and Bedrock UDP port you intend players to use. A failure usually points to an incorrect address, a closed UDP port, a firewall rule, router forwarding or a provider that blocks UDP.
Connect from Windows Bedrock
The Windows Bedrock edition includes a manual server-entry form.
- Sign in to Minecraft with the Microsoft account that has multiplayer access.
- Open Play, then the Servers tab.
- Select Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable server name.
- Enter the public hostname or IP address in the server-address field.
- Enter the Bedrock UDP port—normally
19132, unless your configuration uses another port. - Save the entry and select it to join.
Minecraft’s Bedrock help documentation uses 19132 as the default Bedrock port and documents manual server entry for computer and mobile Bedrock clients. A Windows player on the same home network can instead enter the server’s LAN address when the router does not support hairpin connections.

Connect from Xbox console
The native Xbox console build is limited to featured servers and does not expose the same direct Add Server form available on Windows Bedrock. This is a console interface limitation, not evidence that Geyser is misconfigured.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a maintained console workaround
BedrockConnect is a commonly used community workaround. Its DNS method redirects the featured-server lookup to a menu where the player can enter a custom server IP and port. Because this relies on third-party infrastructure and on behavior that can change with Minecraft or Xbox updates, treat it as a temporary compatibility method rather than a guaranteed feature.
- Read the current instructions in the project’s official repository before changing any DNS setting. Do not rely on an old DNS value copied from a video or forum post.
- Apply the documented DNS change to the Xbox network connection, then restart Minecraft if the featured-server list does not refresh.
- Use the resulting menu to enter the Java server’s public hostname or IP and Geyser’s Bedrock UDP port.
- Restore automatic DNS if the service is unavailable, causes sign-in problems or you no longer need it.
Never enter Microsoft credentials into an unofficial web page. A DNS workaround should redirect the game to a server-selection menu; it should not ask for your account password.
Alternatives when the workaround fails
If a console update breaks the DNS method, use a currently maintained console-compatible method or invite the player through a supported hosted or Realm route. There is no server-side Geyser setting that can add a missing custom-server button to the Xbox interface.
Account, version and multiplayer requirements
- Update Java, Bedrock, Geyser and Floodgate to compatible current releases. A Bedrock client that is newer than the protocol Geyser emulates may be refused or behave incorrectly.
- Every player must sign in with a Microsoft account. Floodgate changes Java-account requirements; it does not remove Microsoft/Xbox identity requirements.
- Check the Microsoft/Xbox privacy and family settings that control multiplayer, clubs and communication. A server can be healthy while an account remains blocked from joining.
- Xbox multiplayer requires the applicable online subscription. A subscription problem can look like a network or server problem.
- Keep the Java server and extensions on a tested update schedule. Back up the world and configuration before upgrading Minecraft, Geyser or Floodgate.
Troubleshooting: identify the failing layer
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Geyser does not appear in the server log | Wrong plugin/mod directory, incompatible build or a dependency error | Confirm the component matches Paper/Spigot, Fabric, NeoForge or the proxy, then read the startup error and install the required matching version. |
| Windows Bedrock says the server is offline | Wrong address or port, closed UDP traffic, firewall block or failed router forwarding | Confirm the Bedrock listener values, allow UDP in Windows Firewall, forward the same port on the router and run geyser connectiontest <ip> <port> from outside the LAN. |
| Java players can join but Bedrock players cannot | The Java TCP endpoint works while Geyser’s separate UDP endpoint does not | Test the Bedrock port independently. Do not assume that opening the Java port also opens Geyser. |
| Geyser starts, then reports a bind or port error | Another service already owns the UDP port | Choose an unused port and update the router, firewall rule and player connection entry together. |
| Floodgate users are rejected during login | Floodgate is missing, mismatched or Geyser still uses normal online authentication | Install matching components, select Floodgate authentication and restart. Verify that the player’s Microsoft account can use multiplayer. |
| Players can join locally but not remotely | LAN address used externally, changing public IP, router forwarding or ISP restrictions | Give remote players the public IPv4 address or a UDP-capable hostname/tunnel, then retest from a different internet connection. |
| Xbox cannot find the custom server | Console has no direct custom-server form, or the third-party workaround changed | Check the maintained workaround instructions, update the game and console, and consider a supported hosted/Realm route. |
| A player is blocked despite a reachable server | Outdated client, disabled multiplayer permission or missing Xbox subscription | Update the game, review Microsoft/Xbox permissions and verify the applicable online subscription. |
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for Geyser
The right choice depends less on the Java edition itself than on who controls UDP networking and maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
Quick Recap
| Decision factor | Self-hosted Windows | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin and configuration control | Maximum control over server files, Geyser, Floodgate and other plugins | Depends on the provider’s panel, permitted software and file access |
| UDP availability | You configure the router and Windows Firewall directly | Provider must allocate and expose a Bedrock UDP port; some plans do not |
| Backups and updates | Your responsibility, including off-device backups | Often easier through a panel, but retention and restore options vary |
| Uptime | Depends on your electricity, internet connection and maintenance | Usually better suited to continuous availability, subject to the provider’s service |
| Cost | No hosting bill, but you supply hardware, bandwidth and maintenance | Recurring plan cost; verify exactly what storage, backups and UDP access include |
| Geyser/Floodgate compatibility | You choose compatible builds and can troubleshoot the full stack | Confirm current build support before migrating an existing world |
Security and maintenance practices
- Expose only the Java and Bedrock ports that players need. Do not open a broad range of inbound ports.
- Use a stable server address, but avoid publishing personal home-network details beyond the public endpoint players require.
- Back up the world, server properties, plugin/mod directories and Geyser/Floodgate configuration before updates.
- Update in stages: back up, update the server platform, test Java access, then update Geyser/Floodgate and test Windows Bedrock before changing the Xbox workaround.
- Keep a short record of the Bedrock port, public hostname, authentication mode and router rule. This makes recovery easier after a reinstall or ISP change.
- When a player reports failure, first separate account and subscription checks from network checks. A disabled multiplayer permission cannot be fixed by changing a port.
Practical launch checklist
- Start the Java server and verify that a Java player can join.
- Install the matching Geyser plugin or mod and confirm it loads without errors.
- Install Floodgate only if Xbox Live authentication without Java ownership is required.
- Set the Bedrock listener address and an unused UDP port, normally 19132.
- Allow that UDP port through Windows Firewall and forward it on the router when self-hosting.
- Run the Geyser connection test from outside the local network.
- Join from Windows Bedrock using Play → Servers → Add Server.
- For Xbox, follow the current instructions for a maintained console workaround or use a supported hosted/Realm route.
- Confirm current versions, Microsoft accounts, multiplayer permissions and the Xbox online subscription.
- Back up the working configuration before inviting the full group.
