WindowsでAltコードを入力する方法は、大きく分けて「テンキーでAltを押しながら数字を入力する方法」と、WordでUnicodeの16進コードを入力してAlt+Xで変換する方法の2つです。両者は別の入力方式で、使える場所も異なります。以下にMicrosoftが示す代表例を方式別にまとめ、一覧にない文字の探し方も紹介します。
テンキーでAltコードを入力する方法
- 入力先にカーソルを置きます。
- Altキーを押したまま、テンキーでコードを入力します。MicrosoftのWindows向け手順では、必要な場合は先頭に0を付けた4桁で入力します。
- Altキーを離すと文字が入力されます。
この方法ではテンキーを使います。キーボード上部に並ぶ数字キーでは代用できません。Num Lockがテンキー入力を切り替えるキーボードでは、Num Lockを有効にしてください。テンキーのない端末では、この入力方法をそのまま使えない場合があります。

コードの先頭に0がある例は、その0も入力します。数字を入力するキーの位置を取り違えないよう、テンキーを使ってください。

WordのAlt+XでUnicode文字を入力する方法
Wordでは、Unicodeの16進コードを入力してからAlt+Xを押す方法もあります。これはAltを押しながらテンキーで数字を打つ方式とは別です。Microsoftの例では、0024の後にAlt+Xを押すと$に、221Aの後にAlt+Xを押すと√に変換されます。
- Word文書にUnicodeの16進コードを入力します。
- 直後にAlt+Xを押して文字に変換します。
- 前後の文字列が16進コードと紛らわしく、変換対象が曖昧な場合は、コードだけを選択してからAlt+Xを押します。
Wordでは、［挿入］>［記号］から文字を選び、その文字がUnicodeの16進コードか10進の記号コードかを確認できます。表示される字形は選択中のフォントにも左右されます。

一覧にない記号や文字を探すには
文字コードが分からないときは文字コード表
Windows標準の「文字コード表（Character Map）」では、選択したフォントで利用できる文字を確認し、選択してコピーできます。コードを推測して入力するより確実な方法です。Microsoftの案内はWindowsでASCIIまたはUnicodeの文字・記号を入力する方法を参照してください。

ラテン文字以外の文字はUnicodeチャートで探す
ラテン文字以外の文字体系を探す場合は、Microsoftが案内するUnicode文字チャートを利用できます。文字コードが分かっても、使っているフォントに字形がなければ意図した表示にならないことがあります。
別の言語を頻繁に入力するならキーボードレイアウトを追加
アクセント付き文字などを継続的に使う場合、コードを都度入力するより、対象言語のキーボードレイアウトをWindowsに追加して切り替える方法が便利です。MicrosoftはWindowsの入力言語と表示言語の設定管理で、言語やキーボードの設定方法を説明しています。Wordだけでアクセント付き文字を入力する場合は、WordとOutlookでアクセント記号を入力するショートカットも確認できます。

入力できないときの確認事項
- 数字キーを確認する：テンキー式Altコードでは、キーボード上部の数字列ではなくテンキーを使います。
- 先頭の0を確認する：Microsoftの4桁コード例では、先頭の0も含めて入力します。
- 方式を確認する：Altを押しながら数字を入力する方法と、Wordで16進コードの後にAlt+Xを押す方法は別です。
- アプリとフォントを確認する：テンキー方式がすべてのアプリで同じように動くとは限りません。フォントが文字に対応していない場合、想定した字形が表示されないことがあります。
