Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You may be able to fix “An operating system wasn’t found” without formatting your PC. The message means the startup process did not locate a bootable Windows installation; it does not prove that Windows must be reinstalled or that the drive has failed. Start by checking that firmware detects the internal drive and selects the right Windows boot entry, then try Windows Recovery Environment’s Startup Repair. Avoid reset, reinstall, or partition changes until you understand their effect on your files.
What the error means—and what it doesn’t
The message appears when the computer cannot find a usable operating system during startup. Possible causes include the firmware selecting the wrong device, a missing or damaged boot entry or configuration, or a drive that is disconnected or failing. The message alone cannot distinguish among them. Microsoft documents this wording in an Azure virtual-machine scenario, so the exact text and cause on a personal computer may differ: Microsoft Learn’s explanation of “Operating system not found”.

Formatting is not the first step. Check the boot selection and run the built-in repair tools before considering more disruptive recovery choices.
Check the drive and boot selection first
- Shut down and disconnect unnecessary storage. Remove USB drives, memory cards, and other removable storage; leave essential keyboard and mouse connected. Restart and see whether the error clears. This low-risk check follows the troubleshooting advice in Microsoft Community’s response to this error.
- Open your PC’s BIOS/UEFI setup. The key and menu names vary by manufacturer and model; consult the computer or motherboard manual rather than guessing.
- Confirm that firmware detects the internal SSD or hard drive. If it is missing, boot-file repair is not the immediate problem. Check hardware connections only if you can do so safely using the manufacturer’s instructions; otherwise, arrange a hardware assessment.
- Check the boot priority. If available, select Windows Boot Manager for the drive containing Windows, or the correct internal system drive, as the intended boot device.
Do not toggle Legacy/CSM, Secure Boot, or UEFI/Legacy mode as a generic fix. Those settings depend on the PC and how Windows was installed. Avoid resetting firmware settings unless you have the manufacturer’s instructions; incorrect changes can create new boot problems.

Try Startup Repair before reinstalling
If Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) opens, use its Startup Repair option. The route is Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. The cited Microsoft Community guidance also calls this Automatic Repair. Follow the prompts, then restart to check whether Windows loads.
If WinRE does not open, create official Windows installation media using another working PC. Microsoft’s instructions require a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB; creating the media deletes everything already on that USB drive. An 8 GB USB flash drive is only the media used to start recovery—it is not itself a repair device. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media instructions.

- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair and follow the prompts.
If BitLocker is enabled, most WinRE recovery options require the recovery key. Retrieve it through the relevant Microsoft account or your organization before treating the recovery tools as unavailable; do not try to bypass encryption. Microsoft explains the key requirement in its Windows recovery-options guidance.
Consider Command Prompt only if you can identify the partitions
A Microsoft Community answer from 2018 suggests using Command Prompt from installation-media recovery and trying bootrec /rebuildbcd. This is one possible boot-configuration repair attempt, not a universal fix or a guarantee. If Windows is found and the tool prompts you to add it to the boot list, follow the prompt only if you have confirmed that it is the installation you intend to recover.

Recovery environments can assign different drive letters from those used during normal Windows startup. Partition layout also depends on whether the installation uses BIOS-style or UEFI boot. Microsoft’s detailed discussion of active partitions and BCD commands is specifically for Azure virtual machines, not a general recipe for consumer PCs: Microsoft Learn on Azure VM boot errors. Do not copy VM-specific steps to a personal computer or use DiskPart commands such as clean, format a partition, delete partitions, or mark a partition active based on a guess. If you cannot confidently identify the Windows and boot partitions, stop and seek model-specific help.
Choose the next step based on what you find
| What you observe | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|
| Firmware does not list the internal drive | Investigate the connection, slot, controller, or drive with qualified hardware help. Recovery media cannot repair a disk the computer does not detect. |
| Firmware sees the drive, and WinRE can find the Windows installation | Try Startup Repair. Consider a targeted BCD repair only if you can identify the relevant installation and partitions. |
| The drive may be failing, or its files are irreplaceable | Prioritize a qualified repair or data-recovery assessment over repeated write attempts or reinstalling. The error alone does not establish whether files can be recovered. |
| Startup Repair fails but preserving the installation still matters | Pause before choosing Reset or reinstall. Review the recovery option’s file consequences and obtain help if the data is not backed up. |
Protect your files before using more disruptive recovery
Startup Repair is intended to fix startup problems, but no recovery choice should be treated as a guarantee that files will be preserved. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can result in data loss and advises backing up important files before proceeding. Reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything, unlike selecting Repair your computer to open recovery tools. Read Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance before selecting Reset or reinstall.
