Changing Windows settings can help fix some Wi-Fi problems, but the available information does not identify the five settings behind the reported speed improvement or provide a before-and-after test. Microsoft’s guidance treats these options as troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed ways to increase internet speed. Here are five settings and actions worth understanding, what each one can actually change, and when to try it.
Why a Windows setting may not make Wi-Fi faster
Wi-Fi performance depends on more than Windows: the computer’s wireless adapter and driver, the router or access point, the internet connection, and conditions such as distance and interference all matter. A setting change may resolve a specific problem—for example, an adapter repeatedly entering a power-saving state—but that does not mean it will increase throughput on every computer or network.

The reported “immediately faster” result cannot be verified without knowing the computer, Windows version, network conditions, exact changes, and speed-test method. Treat it as an individual experience rather than a result you should expect to reproduce.

Five Windows settings and actions to check
1. Disable Wi-Fi adapter power saving when troubleshooting connection problems
Microsoft includes this option in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, choose Properties, and look for the Power Management tab. If available, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then select OK.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
This is a diagnostic step, particularly if the connection drops or behaves unreliably. It is not a guaranteed speed optimization, and the tab or option may not appear for every adapter.
2. Check for Windows updates and device-specific adapter support
Use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates to check for available Windows updates. For wireless driver updates, firmware information, or known compatibility issues, consult support information from the maker of your computer or wireless adapter. A driver or compatibility issue can affect a particular device, so a general Windows setting change is not a substitute for device-specific guidance.

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
3. Leave IP and DNS assignment on DHCP unless you have a specific reason not to
DHCP lets your router or access point assign network settings automatically. Microsoft recommends DHCP for most users because it simplifies TCP/IP configuration. In Windows, check Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi, select the connected network, and review IP assignment and DNS server assignment. If you changed these settings and are troubleshooting a connection, automatic assignment may be appropriate; exact labels can vary by Windows version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteManually entering a public DNS server is not established as a universal Wi-Fi speed fix. DNS settings can affect how domain names are resolved, but changing them does not by itself improve the wireless signal or the speed of the internet service.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
4. Use a metered connection to manage data, not to boost Wi-Fi
In Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi, select the connected network and turn on Metered connection if you need to manage data use on a capped connection. Windows may limit background downloads, app updates, or syncing on a metered network. That can reduce background data use, but it does not make the Wi-Fi radio link or internet service faster.
5. Reserve Network reset for persistent problems
Network reset is a later troubleshooting option, not a routine speed tweak. Microsoft says it should be the last step to try: it removes installed network adapters and their settings, after which Windows reinstalls the adapters on restart. Customized network settings may need to be set up again. Try less disruptive troubleshooting first, and make sure you know how to restore any configuration your computer requires.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Use network commands only when the symptom fits
Microsoft also lists command-line troubleshooting for resetting the TCP/IP stack, releasing and renewing an IP address, and flushing or resetting the DNS client resolver cache. These steps target network configuration, address assignment, or name-resolution problems; they are not interchangeable with changing wireless signal settings and should not be presented as universal throughput boosts.
If you use a command, follow Microsoft’s current instructions for the relevant symptom and run it with the required permissions. A DNS-cache reset may help when a name-resolution problem is suspected, for example, but it does not increase the Wi-Fi link rate simply by clearing the cache.

How to tell whether a change helped
- Identify the problem first: slow downloads, intermittent disconnections, trouble reaching particular sites, or high data use point to different causes.
- Change one setting at a time. Record its original value so you can restore it if the connection gets worse.
- Compare under similar conditions: use the same device, location, network, and speed-test service, and avoid comparing a busy network at one time with a quiet network at another.
- Check more than one result. A single speed test can vary with network load and other conditions; do not treat a brief increase as proof that a setting caused a lasting improvement.
- If the issue remains, check device-maker driver or compatibility information and continue with symptom-specific troubleshooting before considering Network reset.
