Windows vs. Linux: Which Operating System Is Right for Your PC?

Windows is usually the safer pick for Windows-dependent apps and devices; Linux may suit you if your chosen distribution supports your hardware and software. Here’s how to decide—and try Linux without replacing Windows.

Choose Windows if your essential apps, games, or peripherals depend on Windows and you want the least setup friction. Choose Linux if your must-have software and hardware are supported by a distribution you’re willing to use—and you prefer its tools or workflow. There is no universal winner: the answer depends on your exact PC and what you need to run. You can also try Linux inside Windows before replacing anything.

Start with the apps and devices you cannot do without

Before comparing operating systems in the abstract, list the applications, games, printers, scanners, audio devices, and other peripherals you rely on. Check each vendor’s current support information for the exact operating system and version you plan to use. For Steam games, check the individual title rather than assuming that support for the Steam client means every game works.

Linux is a family of distributions—packaged operating systems with different software, desktops, and support policies—not a single edition. Compatibility therefore depends on the distribution as well as your computer and software. Microsoft’s Linux installation guide describes several ways to use Linux from a Windows PC, while its Windows 11 requirements page sets out Windows’ minimum hardware baseline.

How the choice compares

What matters Windows Linux
Required apps and games A safer fit when a must-have program or game requires Windows. A good fit when your required software works on your chosen distribution; verify each important app and game.
Hardware and peripherals Check Windows 11 eligibility and support for your devices. Check support for your exact PC, distribution, drivers, and peripherals.
Trying Linux Can remain your main OS while you use Linux tools through WSL or a virtual machine. Can run alongside Windows in WSL or a VM, or be installed directly on the PC.
Gaming evidence Valve supports Steam on Windows. Valve supports Steam on Linux and SteamOS, but officially supports Ubuntu and SteamOS—not every distribution. Game compatibility still varies by title.
Setup and troubleshooting Often the less disruptive choice if the PC and devices are already set up for Windows. Direct installation may require attention to hardware and driver compatibility; WSL or a VM avoids replacing Windows.

Check whether your PC meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements

Microsoft’s published Windows 11 minimums are a compatibility baseline, not a guarantee that every application will perform well. The requirements include:

Microsoft says initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account. Individual applications and features may require more than the operating system minimum. These figures are Microsoft’s stated minimum requirements; they are not a general recommended configuration for comfortable use.

Choose how far you want to go with Linux

Use Linux tools through WSL

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) lets you run Linux distributions and tools alongside Windows. It is a practical starting point if you mainly want Linux command-line or development tools but still need Windows applications. It does not replace Windows with a Linux desktop.

Run Linux in a virtual machine

A virtual machine runs Linux in software within Windows. You need virtualization software and must allocate some of the PC’s resources to the virtual machine, so the experience depends on your hardware and configuration. It lets you explore a Linux environment without repartitioning the drive.

Install Linux directly or dual boot

A bare-metal installation runs Linux directly on the PC’s hardware. To dual boot it with Windows, you need separate drive space for each operating system, which involves partitioning the drive. Microsoft notes that bare-metal users may encounter driver or hardware compatibility issues. You can use a bootable USB drive to install Linux, as described in Microsoft’s installation guide; an appropriate drive you already own may be sufficient.

If Windows uses BitLocker, prepare before installing Linux. Microsoft specifically advises people planning to dual boot or live boot a bare-metal Linux distribution to retrieve and store their BitLocker recovery keys before installation. That warning concerns those bare-metal boot methods, not WSL or a virtual machine.

What Steam’s figures do—and do not—tell you

Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey reported Windows at 95.03% and Linux at 3.05% among surveyed Steam users. Valve says participation is monthly, optional, and anonymous. Those percentages describe that survey population, not all PC owners or the entire gaming market, and they cannot tell you whether a particular game works on your PC.

Valve supports the Steam client on Windows and Linux/SteamOS. Its Linux documentation says Ubuntu and SteamOS are officially supported; Valve does not officially endorse or support other distributions, even though Steam may run on them. Client support is not a promise that every game, feature, or anti-cheat system is compatible. Confirm support for the individual games you care about.

Should you switch from Windows to Linux?

Switching directly makes sense when you have checked your essential software and devices against a specific Linux distribution and are comfortable handling any setup or compatibility issues that arise. If you are unsure, start with WSL for Linux tools or a virtual machine for a fuller Linux environment. Move to a direct installation only after you have confirmed your requirements and chosen whether Linux will replace Windows or share the PC through dual boot.

There is no controlled Windows-versus-Linux performance benchmark or comparative security study established here, so a blanket claim that one is faster, safer, or more private would be unjustified. On an individual PC, results depend on its hardware, drivers, workload, configuration, and software versions.

Decision checklist

  1. Write down the applications, games, and peripherals you must keep using; check their vendor support and, for Steam games, each title’s compatibility.
  2. Compare your PC with Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements if Windows 11 is an option you need to preserve.
  3. If considering Linux, choose a distribution and check support for your exact hardware and devices.
  4. Pick a trial or installation method: WSL, a virtual machine, or a direct install. For dual boot, plan the drive partitioning.
  5. Before a bare-metal dual or live boot on a BitLocker-encrypted Windows PC, retrieve and store the recovery keys.
