Choose the Xbox Series X if you want a disc-drive option, Xbox’s native 4K display target, or the option of a 2TB internal SSD. Choose the Xbox Series S if you are happy with digital-only games, Xbox’s 1440p design target, and the capacity of the specific model you buy. Neither console guarantees a particular RPG’s resolution or frame rate: check the game’s own modes before deciding.

What the resolution targets mean for an RPG
Xbox describes Series X as displaying games in native 4K, while Series S is designed for 1440p and can upscale to 4K. These are platform-level descriptions, not promises that every RPG renders at those resolutions. A particular game may use different settings or modes on each console, and the result also depends on the display. Xbox’s Series S product page describes it as “designed for disc-free gaming at 1440p (with the ability to upscale to 4K).” See Xbox’s comparison and Series S product page.

If resolution or frame rate is decisive for a specific RPG, look up that title’s published console modes rather than assuming a universal advantage from the console specifications. The platform information here does not establish game-by-game benchmarks.

Xbox’s current comparison lists Series X models with 1TB or 2TB SSDs and Series S models with 512GB or 1TB SSDs. Those are total drive capacities, not a promise of how much space remains for games after system use. Check the model’s listing in your market before purchase; configurations and availability can vary. Xbox’s model comparison.

Expansion card: play optimized games from added storage
Both consoles support the dedicated Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card. Xbox says it adds storage at the same performance as the custom internal SSD, so it is the relevant option if you want to keep more optimized games installed and playable without moving them back to internal storage. USB drive: useful, but not equivalent
Xbox’s storage guidance says USB 3.1 storage can hold next-generation optimized games, but its comparison says those optimized games can be played directly only from internal storage or the expansion card. USB storage can still help with storing games and running compatible older titles; do not treat it as a substitute for the expansion card when your aim is to play Series X|S-optimized games from the external drive. Disc ownership can settle the choice
Series S is digital-only, so it cannot play physical RPG discs. Series X has disc-drive models, but Xbox also lists an all-digital Series X. If you want to use discs, confirm that the specific Series X listing includes a disc drive; the console name alone is not enough. Xbox comparison and Series S product page.
How to choose
Choose a disc-drive Series X if
- You want to play physical RPG discs.
- You prioritize Xbox’s native 4K platform target.
- You want the listed 2TB internal SSD option.
Make sure the Series X SKU you are considering has a disc drive; an all-digital version is also listed by Xbox. Xbox comparison.

Choose Series S if
- You buy and play games digitally.
- Xbox’s 1440p design target suits your display and preferences.
- The 512GB or 1TB capacity of the specific Series S model fits how many games you want installed.

Check the RPG and your old library
For a particular RPG, check the publisher’s information for supported modes on each console before buying. Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S and identifies selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles as backward compatible; support and features vary by game, and downloads may be required. That does not mean every older RPG is supported. Xbox backward compatibility.
