A Windows update can install successfully without changing the version shown by winver. Most updates are routine quality or security fixes; only a feature update moves Windows to a different release. Check the update’s type and your installed version before trying to install anything again.
Why an installed update may not change your Windows version
Windows updates do different jobs. Quality updates deliver smaller, more frequent fixes and security improvements. Feature updates introduce a new Windows release. A successful quality-update entry in Update history is not evidence that a feature release was installed.

| Update type | What it does | Should the Windows release change? |
|---|---|---|
| Quality update | Provides routine fixes and security updates. | Usually no. It may change the OS build, but not the release displayed as the Windows version. |
| Feature update | Installs a Windows feature release with new capabilities. | Yes, if the update applies to the device and completes successfully. |
Microsoft explains the difference between update types in its Windows Update Assistant guidance.
Check which Windows version is actually installed
- Type
winverin taskbar Search and open the result. Note the Windows version and OS build shown. - Open Settings > System > About and check the Windows specifications.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Note the update name or KB number and whether it says installed, failed, or requires a restart.
Use winver to verify the release; an installed KB entry on its own does not show that a feature update took place. Microsoft provides steps for checking Windows version information in its Windows Update Assistant article.

If a restart is pending, complete it first
If Windows Update says a restart is required, save your work and restart normally. Then run winver again. A restart can finish an update that has not yet fully applied; if the displayed release remains the same, check whether the update was a quality update or whether a feature update was actually offered.
If the feature update is not offered
Not every feature update appears for every device at the same time. Microsoft uses phased rollouts, and it may apply a safeguard hold when a known compatibility issue could affect a device. Microsoft says safeguard holds prevent a device with a known issue from being offered a new feature update. Check the message shown in Windows Update and Microsoft’s guidance on checking safeguard holds; do not try to bypass a hold as a first response.

Some releases have specific eligibility rules
Availability depends on the release. For example, Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is intended for select new devices and is not offered as an in-place update from versions 24H2 or 25H2 on existing devices. This is a rule for that release, not a general explanation for every missing update. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H1 information and 26H2 update history for current release-specific details.

Managed devices may be controlled by an administrator
If the PC belongs to work or school, update policies may be managed by the organization. Ask its administrator about the feature-update schedule rather than attempting to override those policies.

If the update was offered but failed
Use the displayed error code and status to guide troubleshooting. Start with Microsoft’s recommended Windows Update troubleshooter, then restart and check for updates again. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Its Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions describe the run, restart, and retry sequence.
- Back up important personal files before troubleshooting. Microsoft lists copying files to a USB drive and OneDrive as options.
- Confirm the PC has power and an internet connection, and that you have administrator access.
- Disconnect external devices that are not needed for the update.
- Run the applicable Windows Update troubleshooter. After it completes, restart and check for updates again.
- If the update still fails, use the exact error code to find the relevant steps in Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide. Storage shortages, update-cache problems, access errors, and system-file issues require different remedies; do not apply commands or file operations meant for a different error.
If you want to install an eligible feature update manually
Microsoft says the Windows Update Assistant can install the latest compatible feature update without waiting for automatic rollout. It supports x86/64 devices but does not run on ARM-based PCs. Check the Assistant’s eligibility guidance before using it, and do not treat it as a way to bypass a compatibility hold or an organization’s update policy. The current details are in Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant documentation.
If the PC is still on Windows 10
Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. That support milestone does not by itself identify why a particular update did not install or change the version. See Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guidance for applicable next steps.
