Windows Update Resumes: Choose the Right Way to Manage It

Windows Update is designed to resume automatically. Use a temporary pause to delay updates, Active hours to reduce inconvenient restarts, and IT support for managed PCs.

Windows Update turning back on is usually expected: Windows automatically downloads and installs available updates, and pausing updates only delays them temporarily. If your main problem is an inconvenient restart, set Active hours; if this is a work or school PC, an administrator may control its update behavior.

First, identify what is turning back on

“Windows Update turns on” can mean several different things: updates resume after a pause, an update downloads or installs, Windows asks for a restart, or a setting appears to have changed. Those are not the same behavior. Windows is designed to update automatically, and some updates need a restart to finish. On a metered connection, Windows defers downloads. Microsoft’s active-hours guidance explains the expected update and restart behavior.

The exact cause on an individual PC depends on its Windows version and edition, whether an organization manages it, its recent update state, and which setting or notification changed. Check those details before treating a restart prompt as evidence that a pause or other control failed.

Choose the control that fits the interruption

What you want to change Use What it affects
Delay updates for a while Pause updates Temporarily delays updates; it is not a permanent off switch.
Avoid a restart during your usual working hours Active hours Helps prevent update restarts at inconvenient times; it does not stop downloads or installations.

Pause updates for a temporary delay

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Pause updates and choose an available pause period. The current Microsoft guidance describes a maximum pause of up to 35 days.
  3. When the pause ends, Windows checks for available updates and resumes downloading and installing them. To pause again, install the latest updates first if Windows requires it.

Microsoft explicitly notes that pausing does not permanently turn off automatic updates. Its pause-updates instructions describe the temporary control and what happens when the pause expires.

Set Active hours to reduce disruptive restarts

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
  2. Choose the automatic option or set the hours when you normally use the PC, if manual scheduling is available.

Active hours are about restart timing, not turning off updates. Microsoft’s Windows active-hours guidance describes the setting for Windows 11 and Windows 10; navigation can differ between versions.

Check whether an organization manages the PC

On a work or school device, Windows Update behavior may be set by an administrator through Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM), including Microsoft Intune. Local Settings may not override those policies. If the update behavior differs from what you selected, ask your organization’s IT administrator to check the device’s update policy. Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows Update client policies and Group Policy configuration guidance.

What changed with Windows 11 restart behavior in 2026?

Microsoft announced on August 14, 2026, that updates released on and after July 28, 2026, are being combined toward one monthly restart for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. The rollout is gradual, so it may not apply to every eligible device yet. Some security, emergency, and other updates can still install promptly. This change concerns restart consolidation; it does not make Windows Update permanently optional. See Microsoft’s restart-consolidation notice for the stated versions and exceptions.

If you use Windows 10

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The Windows 11 paths in this article may not apply unchanged. Check Microsoft’s Windows 10 support lifecycle guidance for information relevant to your device.

What to check if updates still seem to resume unexpectedly

  • Confirm whether you see an update download or installation, a restart request, or a setting changing; each points to a different issue.
  • Check your Windows version and edition, and note whether the PC is managed by work or school.
  • If you paused updates, check whether the selected pause period has ended.
  • If you need fewer interruptions rather than a delay, review Active hours and any available restart scheduling options.
  • For organization-managed devices, ask IT before changing update settings.

Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says updates cannot be stopped entirely because they help keep a device secure. The supported consumer controls covered here are temporary pause and restart scheduling; avoid treating deletion or disabling of update services as a general fix.
