What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If the Check for updates button is greyed out, first check whether updates are paused or the PC is managed by work or school. Those are documented reasons Windows Update access may be unavailable; the symptom alone does not identify one universal cause. On a personal, unmanaged PC, restart and use Windows’ built-in troubleshooter. On a managed device, ask the administrator to review update policy.
Start by checking whether the PC is managed
Open Settings > Windows Update and look for a notice such as “Some of these settings are managed by your organization.” Microsoft documents policies that can restrict access to Windows Update, including the SetDisableUXWUAccess policy, update deferrals, a target feature release, mobile device management (MDM), and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). If this is a work or school computer, contact its IT administrator rather than trying to remove or override a policy. Microsoft notes that its Windows Update repair option may be unavailable on a work- or school-managed PC. Microsoft’s guidance on reinstalling the current Windows version explains that limitation.

On a personal PC, check the pause status next. A management notice is not proof of a fault: an administrator may intentionally control when updates are offered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck whether updates are paused
In Settings > Windows Update, look for a pause status and its resume date. Microsoft says updates can be paused for up to 35 days. When the pause expires, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates. If the page offers a resume option and this is your personal PC, use it, then return to Windows Update and check again. Microsoft’s instructions for pausing updates describe the pause limit and behavior.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter on a personal PC
If updates are not paused and the device is not managed, run the built-in diagnostic. For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. The Settings route is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update. On Windows 10, the legacy route is Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Follow the prompts, restart when the troubleshooter finishes, then open Windows Update and try again. See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Check which Windows version is installed
If the device runs Windows 10, distinguish a greyed-out control from the end of support. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Windows 10’s support status does not, by itself, explain why a particular button is disabled, but it does mean that an unavailable newer update should not automatically be treated as a routine Windows 11 update problem. Confirm the installed version and review Microsoft’s Windows 10 support lifecycle notice.

If the button is still unavailable
- Work or school PC: Ask IT whether update access is controlled by policy and when the device is scheduled to receive updates.
- Personal PC with a pause active: Resume updates if that option is available, or wait until the displayed pause end date, then check again.
- Personal PC with no pause: Run the troubleshooter, restart, and try again. If the control remains disabled, note the Windows version and any message shown on the Windows Update page before consulting Microsoft support.
A disabled manual check is not, by itself, evidence of hardware failure. The official guidance for this symptom centers on update settings, built-in diagnostics, and administrator-managed policy; it does not establish a need for a repair utility or registry change.
