Windows Storage Spaces combines eligible physical drives into a pool, then lets you create virtual drives called storage spaces from that pool. You can choose a layout that prioritizes capacity, performance, or protection against drive failures. Microsoft’s consumer guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
How Windows Storage Spaces works
The basic structure is physical drives → storage pool → storage space → formatted volume. Windows groups eligible drives into a pool. You create a storage space from the pool, then format it and assign a drive letter so it can be used like a regular drive.

This is a form of storage virtualization: the virtual drive is built from pooled physical storage rather than being a single physical disk. Microsoft’s Storage Spaces in Windows guidance explains the consumer feature; on Windows Server, virtual disks can also be configured with resiliency and provisioning settings before volumes are created. A Windows Server storage space cannot host the Windows operating system.

Choose a layout based on the data and the failure risk
A layout determines whether Storage Spaces keeps redundant information across drives. The options involve trade-offs among drive-failure tolerance, usable capacity, performance, and workload.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Layout | Drive requirements and protection | Trade-off and suitable use |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | Spreads data across drives without redundancy; does not protect against a drive failure. | Uses capacity efficiently and offers good performance. Use for temporary or replaceable data, or data protected elsewhere. |
| Two-way mirror | Keeps two copies, can tolerate one drive failure, and requires at least two drives. | Uses more raw capacity for redundancy than a simple layout. |
| Three-way mirror | Keeps three copies, can tolerate two drive failures, and requires at least five drives. | Provides greater drive-failure tolerance than a two-way mirror, at a higher capacity cost. |
| Parity | At least three drives are required for protection against one drive failure; at least seven for protection against two. | Uses parity information and is more capacity-efficient than mirroring. Microsoft recommends it for archival data and streaming media. |
These failure-tolerance descriptions concern drive failures; they do not make a resilient space a complete backup strategy. Keep a separate backup of important files.
What drives can you use?
Microsoft says Windows 10 and Windows 11 require at least two additional drives beyond the drive that contains Windows. Eligible drives can be internal or external HDDs or SSDs connected through USB, SATA, or SAS.

Connection type alone does not determine eligibility. An external USB disk might work in File Explorer but still be unavailable for a pool if its enclosure reports it as removable or presents multiple disks to Windows as one device. Check whether Windows identifies the specific disk as eligible before planning a pool around it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can add eligible drives to an existing pool to expand its available capacity. An additional drive is only relevant if you need that expansion, and compatibility depends on the drive, enclosure, and how Windows identifies them.

Storage Spaces vs. Storage Spaces Direct
Storage Spaces is the feature used to pool drives on a Windows PC. Storage Spaces Direct is a related Windows Server cluster technology: it combines internal drives across servers and provides cluster-wide capabilities. The names refer to different deployment models, so a PC user asking about Storage Spaces generally does not need Storage Spaces Direct.
