Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you need to free disk space, start with Windows Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations; most people do not need System Mechanic for routine cleanup. System Mechanic is a paid suite with additional advertised startup and maintenance tools, but available sources do not establish that it cleans better or makes a PC faster than Windows’ built-in options.
What problem are you trying to solve?
- Freeing space: Use Windows Storage settings, Storage Sense, or Cleanup recommendations first.
- Choosing what to remove: Review Cleanup recommendations or use Disk Cleanup to select categories manually.
- Managing startup and other maintenance: System Mechanic may be relevant if you specifically want its additional tools and accept a subscription. iolo’s feature descriptions are vendor claims, not independent performance results.
How the Windows tools differ
Storage Sense: automatic routine cleanup
Microsoft documents Storage Sense for Windows 10 and Windows 11. By default, it can run when the device is low on disk space and remove unnecessary temporary files; it also deletes Recycle Bin contents after the period you configure. Downloads and cloud files are left alone unless you change the relevant settings. Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:. Microsoft says it cannot run unless you are signed in and online for more than 10 minutes. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance explains the settings and behavior.

For cloud files managed with OneDrive, files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt from online-only management. When eligible files become online-only, they can be made locally available again when space and connectivity permit; that is not the same as permanently deleting them.

Cleanup recommendations: review before removing
Windows Storage settings show how disk space is being used, including by installed apps, temporary files, and system or reserved storage. Cleanup recommendations can identify categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. You review and select items rather than relying on Storage Sense’s automatic behavior. See Microsoft’s Storage settings guide.

Disk Cleanup: manual category selection
Disk Cleanup remains a manual option for selecting temporary and system file categories to remove. Windows also provides separate storage views and actions for drives beyond the system drive; Storage Sense itself is documented as working on the system drive. Microsoft’s guide to freeing up drive space covers built-in approaches.
What System Mechanic adds
iolo describes System Mechanic as a Windows cleanup and optimization suite. Its product page advertises removal of more than 50 types of junk files, startup-program management, automated maintenance, and tools intended to tune CPU, memory, storage, or internet settings. Those are the vendor’s descriptions, not independent proof of improved speed, better cleanup, or a particular outcome on your PC. The page also advertises automated detection and fixing of more than 30,000 issues; that is a vendor claim, not a demonstrated user result. See iolo’s System Mechanic product page.

Do you need System Mechanic if Windows already has Storage Sense?
Usually not if your goal is simply to recover disk space. Begin with Storage settings to see what is using space, then use Storage Sense for configured routine cleanup and Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup when you want to choose items yourself. Windows cleanup can also help when you need space for an update, but the amount required varies by update path and installed optional content; there is no single universal figure. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.
