For a buoyant metamaterial, seawater resistance and deep-pressure durability are separate questions. A 2026 study of a titanium–polyurethane lattice found little change after two weeks in natural seawater, but did not report deep hydrostatic-pressure cycling. The result is promising short-term evidence—not a service-life or depth qualification.
What the lattice is made of—and what it is designed to do
The 2026 demonstrator combines a laser powder-bed-fused Ti-6Al-4V frame with hollow struts filled with expandable polyurethane (PU) foam. Its exterior remains an open-cell lattice that water can pass through, while the foam inside the struts is intended to preserve buoyant volume. The authors describe it as the first buoyant metal–polymer open-cell hybrid lattice metamaterial (Noronha et al., Advanced Materials, 2026).

The demonstrator was approximately 100 mm high and 85 mm wide. In the study’s controlled oscillatory-flow setup, it floated stably while rotating. It also retained flotation after substantial compression damage, including node damage and fracture of a lattice layer. Those observations concern the study’s mechanical setup; they do not establish a rated depth or prove suitability for subsea deployment.

What the seawater test established
Noronha et al. immersed Ti-6Al-4V+PU specimens in natural Port Phillip Bay seawater, measured at 1.03 g/cm³, for two weeks. Compared with otherwise identical unexposed specimens, the study reported:

| Measured outcome | Reported result after two weeks |
|---|---|
| Mass loss | 0.15 ± 0.03% |
| Average yield-strength change | Decrease of 0.37 ± 0.12% |
| Average ultimate-compressive-strength change | Decrease of 0.86 ± 0.42% |
These are results for the tested specimens and exposure—not a general prediction of how the lattice will perform over months or years. The same paper reports buoyant behavior after more than two months of freshwater immersion, but ambient freshwater immersion is not a substitute for seawater aging or pressure testing.
Why pressure and time can change buoyancy materials
Repeated hydrostatic pressure can promote water uptake and damage
A separate 2026 study of polymer-matrix solid buoyancy material found increased water absorption with repeated hydrostatic-pressure use. It associated degradation with stress relaxation, redistribution of internal stress, local stress concentrations, and microcrack initiation (2026 cyclic-pressure study). This identifies mechanisms worth checking in the hybrid lattice, but it is not a test of the Ti-6Al-4V/PU architecture.

Prolonged seawater exposure can alter polyurethane foam
A 2024 study examined polyurethane foam in artificial seawater under confined compression for 400 days. It reported U-shaped changes in elastic modulus and yield stress, along with microcrack initiation and propagation and window-burst (2024 study in Materials Letters). The foam in that study was not the PU infill used in Noronha et al.’s lattice, so its results cannot be treated as measured aging or failure of the hybrid.

In a 2026 numerical and experimental study of epoxy-based syntactic-foam assemblies, block-to-block heterogeneity lowered modeled crack-initiation pressure by up to 10.40%. Optimized bonding topology and cylindrical geometry raised crack resistance by up to 20.74% and 27.71%, respectively (Ying et al., Ocean Engineering, 2026). These values are specific to those assemblies and models; they should not be transferred to the open-cell titanium lattice. They do, however, show why material variation, joints, and geometry deserve attention when evaluating an assembled buoyancy structure.

What a durability claim would need to specify
“Withstands seawater” or “works at depth” is incomplete without a defined exposure and measured outcome. A useful qualification for this kind of structure would report:
- Environment: freshwater, natural seawater, or artificial seawater, including salinity or measured density where available.
- Pressure protocol: maximum hydrostatic pressure, cycle count, dwell time, and whether specimens recover or dry between cycles.
- Duration: total exposure time, distinguished from the number of pressure cycles. A continuous soak and repeated deep dives are not equivalent.
- Architecture and scale: whether the test uses foam coupons, hollow-strut lattice specimens, bonded blocks, or a full assembled buoy.
- Outcomes: buoyancy or water uptake, mass change, strength or modulus retention, crack initiation, and damage tolerance before and after exposure.
A 2014 characterization paper noted that, in its research context, there was no standard procedure for testing materials under pure hydrostatic pressure and proposed tracking buoyancy loss (2014 characterization paper). That historical observation does not establish which standards apply today.

What remains unknown for this hybrid lattice
The direct seawater result covers two weeks, and the reviewed lattice study does not report deep hydrostatic-pressure cycling. The available evidence therefore does not establish how many deep-sea pressure cycles the lattice can tolerate, what depth it is qualified for, or whether pressure and seawater together produce effects not seen in either exposure alone. Results from other polymer buoyancy materials and PU foams provide reasons to test those questions, not answers about this specific design.
