Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For ordinary drive formatting, leave Allocation unit size set to Default. It is the file system’s cluster size, and Microsoft recommends the default for general use. Windows chooses that default based on the volume size and file system, so there is no single value that applies to every drive.
What does allocation unit size mean?
Allocation unit size is another name for cluster size: the granularity the file system uses to allocate file data. Microsoft describes a cluster as the smallest unit the file system can reference in its Storage at Microsoft explanation of cluster sizes.

Because allocation happens in whole clusters, a file’s allocated space is rounded up to a cluster boundary. With larger clusters, the final cluster of a small file can contain more unused space. The practical effect depends on the sizes and number of files on the drive; there is no universal waste estimate for a typical workload.

Yes, unless a particular workload or application requires a different value. Microsoft’s FORMAT command documentation says, “If you don’t specify unit size, it’s chosen based on volume size. Default settings are recommended for general use.”
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The formatting options cover FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, and ReFS. Each file system has its own valid allocation-unit sizes, and Windows selects a default based on the volume size when you do not specify one. That is why a single “best” size cannot be stated for all drives and formats.
What is the default allocation unit size for NTFS?
Microsoft’s NTFS overview lists 4 KB as the default cluster size for NTFS in its capacity table. That is a useful NTFS-specific reference, not a universal default for every file system, volume size, or drive.

When should you choose a different size?
NTFS volumes used with Data Deduplication or very large files
Microsoft recommends 64 KB allocation units for NTFS volumes used with Data Deduplication or for hosting large files such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB. This is a workload-specific recommendation, not a general performance tweak for a home or everyday drive. See Microsoft’s NTFS guidance.

When NTFS compression matters
Do not select an NTFS allocation unit larger than 4096 bytes if you need NTFS compression: Microsoft’s FORMAT documentation says compression is unsupported above that size. Check this constraint before formatting, because changing the allocation size later generally means reformatting and restoring the data.

Does a larger allocation unit make a drive faster?
The cited Microsoft guidance does not support a blanket “bigger is faster” rule. Choose a larger size only when a documented workload requirement calls for it, and weigh the file-size pattern and any file-system feature constraints. For general use, Default remains Microsoft’s recommendation.
NTFS cluster-size capacity figures: what do they mean?
Microsoft’s NTFS capacity table lists the following largest volume/file sizes for the specified cluster sizes. These are capacity limits in the table, not recommendations for a typical drive. The table’s figures are subject to the supported cluster count and Windows version; Microsoft also notes that services or applications can impose smaller limits.

| NTFS cluster size | Largest volume/file size listed by Microsoft | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 4 KB (default) | 16 TB | Microsoft’s 2025 NTFS capacity table; not a general performance target. |
| 64 KB | 256 TB | Microsoft’s 2025 NTFS capacity table; 64 KB is separately recommended for specified Data Deduplication and large-file workloads. |
| 2048 KB | 8 PB | Microsoft’s 2025 NTFS capacity table; not a general-use recommendation. |
Those are NTFS figures, not promises that every application can use a volume of that size. Microsoft gives 64 TB as an example of a smaller limit that Previous Versions or some VSS-dependent backup applications may impose. The figures and caveats appear in the NTFS overview.
Why does Windows still mention floppy disks?
The floppy reference is real in Microsoft’s current FORMAT documentation: the page applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and still includes floppy-specific sizing options, including 1.44 MB values, as well as an example that formats a floppy in drive A. That establishes that floppy-era concepts remain in the command documentation; it does not establish when the current File Explorer Format dialog was created or how long its implementation has remained unchanged.

Why can’t I choose any cluster size I want?
The file system imposes limits, and the FORMAT command stops if a requested size cannot meet the applicable requirements. Microsoft’s documentation says FAT permits no more than 65,526 clusters, while FAT32 permits 65,527 to 4,177,917 clusters. These are file-system implementation limits, not reasons to tune FAT or FAT32 manually. See the FORMAT command documentation.
Quick Recap
What to do in the Format dialog
- Choose the file system required for the drive and its intended use.
- Leave Allocation unit size on Default for ordinary use.
- Choose a different size only if a documented workload or application requirement calls for it; for NTFS, check the compression constraint and the specific Microsoft guidance above.
- Before formatting, confirm the correct drive is selected and that any data you need is backed up. Formatting changes the file system and can erase existing data.
