What the Echo Hub does
The Echo Hub is an 8-inch touchscreen panel for controlling compatible smart-home devices. Tom’s Guide’s 2024 product coverage describes a customizable dashboard and Matter and Zigbee radios. Those are dated product details, so check the current manufacturer listing for specifications and verify that your particular devices are supported.

Will it work with your smart devices?
Do not assume that a hub works with every device—or that devices from the same brand all share compatibility. Before ordering, check the Echo Hub’s current supported-device information and each intended device’s requirements. Confirm that your lights, locks, cameras, sensors or thermostat are specifically compatible with the hub and the ecosystem you plan to use.

Know the protocol differences
- Matter: A smart-home connectivity standard. Its presence does not mean every Matter device or feature will work with every controller; confirm device-level compatibility.
- Thread: A wireless networking technology used by some smart-home devices. Thread support is separate from Matter support, so check whether the hub and device have the connectivity needed.
- Zigbee: A distinct wireless protocol. Tom’s Guide’s 2024 report says the Echo Hub includes Zigbee radio support, but check current specifications and the intended device’s compatibility.
- Z-Wave: Another distinct protocol. Support for Matter, Thread or Zigbee does not establish Z-Wave support.
These technologies are not interchangeable. A device may require a particular radio, bridge or ecosystem, so verify its requirements rather than buying based on a protocol name alone.
