If it does, install that version from Steam. If it is Windows-only, your options depend on whether your Mac has an Intel processor or Apple silicon—and none of the Windows-running or compatibility-layer approaches guarantees that a particular game will work.
Start by checking the game and your Mac
- On your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Note whether the processor is Intel or Apple silicon.
- Open the game’s Steam listing and check its system requirements for macOS support. Steam says a purchase includes a copy for each operating system the game supports; buying a game does not mean it supports macOS. Steam Support explains its multi-OS policy.
- If the listing supports macOS, install that version in Steam. If it lists only Windows, choose a route that fits your Mac and the game’s requirements.
Choose a route for a Windows-only game

If your Mac has an Intel processor
Consider Boot Camp for native Windows boot
Boot Camp is Apple’s route for installing Windows on a compatible Intel Mac. You restart into Windows to play, rather than running Windows beside macOS. Check Apple’s instructions for your exact model and the Windows and game requirements before installing. Boot Camp is not an option for Apple silicon Macs.

Consider virtualization if you need macOS open too
A virtual machine runs Windows within macOS, which can be convenient if you want to switch between the two without restarting. That convenience does not make it equivalent to booting directly into Windows for gaming: compatibility and performance still depend on the title and setup.
If your Mac has Apple silicon
Boot Camp is not available on Apple silicon. A virtual machine such as Parallels or compatibility-layer experimentation may be possible, but a product’s ability to run Windows or evaluate Windows software is not proof that your game works. Apple describes the Game Porting Toolkit as a way to evaluate unmodified Windows executables and assess graphics portability; CrossOver is one approach Apple references for accessing that environment.

For Parallels Desktop 26, its documentation lists at least 16 GB of disk space for the Windows operating system. Treat that as a stated storage requirement, not a recommendation for total Mac storage or a performance guarantee; check the current requirements for the version you plan to use.
Check game-specific requirements before installing
Windows support alone may not be enough. Check the game publisher’s requirements and current compatibility reports for the exact title, especially if you rely on online play. Graphics APIs, launchers, DRM, and anti-cheat systems can affect whether a game starts or whether multiplayer features work. The general route descriptions above cannot establish support for an unspecified game.

- Confirm the game’s supported operating systems on its Steam listing.
- Check the official requirements for the Windows version and hardware the game expects.
- Look for title-specific reports covering your Mac type and chosen method, with particular attention to anti-cheat and online features.
- Plan for the Windows installation’s storage and memory needs; requirements differ by method and software version.
Rosetta does not make Windows games Mac apps
Rosetta translates certain Intel-based Mac apps so they can run on Apple silicon. It does not convert arbitrary Windows games into macOS apps. Apple says Rosetta is available through macOS 27; in macOS 28, availability is limited to certain older, unmaintained games that use Intel frameworks. Apple explains Rosetta’s role and availability.

What to check when a game will not run
- It does not appear as a Mac install: Recheck the Steam listing’s supported operating systems. A Steam purchase covers only the operating systems supported by that game.
- Windows is installed but the game will not launch: Check the game’s official requirements and title-specific compatibility reports for the Windows architecture, graphics needs, launcher, and DRM.
- The game launches but online play fails: Check the publisher’s current guidance for anti-cheat and multiplayer support under your chosen setup. Offline launch success does not establish online compatibility.
- You are choosing between setup methods: Compare your Mac’s processor, whether a native macOS build exists, Windows support, graphics demands, setup effort, cost, and online requirements. The right route cannot be determined without the game and Mac details.
