Read TikTok LIVE Events with Python—and What to Know About JavaScript

A five-line Python example shows how to listen for TikTok LIVE comments, with clear limits on unofficial access and the JavaScript connector’s current API.

You can listen for TikTok LIVE events with an unofficial Python client: install TikTokLive, connect to a creator’s live room, and register an asynchronous event handler. The same five-line promise is not safe for typed JavaScript here: the available documentation identifies the Node.js connector but does not establish its current imports or event signatures. The distinction matters because both approaches use third-party clients of TikTok’s Webcast interface, not a public official API for livestream events.

Get LIVE comments with Python

The TikTokLive project’s documented quick start is an event-listener pattern. This five-line example listens for comments; replace @username with the streamer’s TikTok unique ID.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

from TikTokLive import TikTokLiveClient
from TikTokLive.events import CommentEvent
client = TikTokLiveClient(unique_id="@username")
client.add_listener(CommentEvent, lambda event: print(event.comment))
client.run()

The project documents both explicit add_listener registration and a decorator pattern. For a small standalone script, it shows client.run(); applications that already manage an asynchronous event loop should use the client’s asynchronous connection methods instead. Check the current TikTokLive README for installation and API details before running the snippet, since package interfaces can change.

Install the package with pip install TikTokLive. A comment handler receives an event object; the example prints its comment text. Use the project’s current event reference to inspect available event fields and types for your installed version.

What can you listen for?

The project lists event families including comments, gifts, likes, follows, shares, battles, polls, captions, and room events related to viewer counts. That list is not a guarantee that every event will be available in every session: TikTok can change the Webcast protocol and schema, and the project notes that events may disappear from its generated schema.

Start with the event your application actually needs, then verify its current name and payload in the project documentation. Do not assume a field or event name from an older example remains valid.

What about typed JavaScript?

The TikTokLive README points Node.js, JavaScript, and TypeScript users to TikTok-Live-Connector. The available project information does not establish the connector’s current import paths, constructor signature, event names, or listener method, so an exact five-line TypeScript example would risk being wrong. Follow the connector’s own current README and examples for the version you install rather than translating Python method names literally.

Is there an official TikTok LIVE API?

The TikTokLive project FAQ says, “TikTok does not offer a public official API for reading livestream events.” That is the project’s characterization, not a statement from TikTok. TikTokLive describes itself as an unofficial reverse-engineering project that reads Webcast WebSocket data available to a viewer.

TikTok does document an official webhook interface with subscriptions to specified events and an event create_time field. The webhook documentation does not establish unrestricted subscriptions to public LIVE comments, gifts, or viewer counts. Treat that developer surface and unofficial Webcast clients as separate interfaces.

Is this suitable for a production service?

An unofficial client depends on a protocol and event schema that TikTok can change. The TikTokLive documentation recommends EulerStream’s managed TikTok LIVE WebSocket API for readers who need guaranteed uptime; that recommendation is the project’s, not an independent uptime verification or evidence that the service is official TikTok infrastructure. Assess current service terms and operational needs before relying on any managed option.
