Windows Server 2025 SFC and DISM Errors: Repair Order and Next Steps

For Windows Server 2025 component-store problems, Microsoft recommends DISM RestoreHealth before SFC. The right next step depends on the exact error and available repair source.

For component-store corruption on Windows Server 2025, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow. That is Microsoft’s documented repair order, not a guaranteed fix for every SFC or DISM error. The title alone does not identify a particular error code or establish that a server has been repaired.

What to record before troubleshooting

Capture the exact command that failed and its complete output, including any error code. Also record the Windows Server edition and OS build, when the failure occurred, and whether the server can reach Windows Update. These details help distinguish a component-store problem from a repair-source issue or a failure during feature or role installation.

  • Copy the full error text and code rather than relying on a paraphrase.
  • Note whether the problem occurred during a manual SFC or DISM run, an update, or installation of a Windows feature or role.
  • Record the server’s edition and build, and whether Windows Update is reachable from that server.

Run Microsoft’s repair sequence

Open Command Prompt with elevated privileges. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC then scans protected system files and replaces incorrect versions. Microsoft’s Windows Server 2025 SFC reference states that the operator must be a member of the Administrators group. See the Microsoft SFC command reference and its Windows Server corruption and installation-failure guidance.

  1. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and allow it to finish.
  2. If DISM completes successfully, run sfc /scannow.
  3. Review the final output from both commands and note whether either reports files it could not repair or a source problem.

Do not treat the commands as proof of resolution until they complete and their results are checked. If DISM does not succeed, examine %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and correlate relevant entries with the time of the failed command.

Choose a repair source based on the failure

DISM normally obtains repair files from Windows Update. If that source cannot provide the required files, Microsoft’s guidance describes using a valid Windows installation or Windows folder as an alternate source. Do not copy a source path or WIM index from an unrelated system: validate the source against the installed environment and the failure shown by DISM.

Situation Repair-source path What to check
The server can use Windows Update and DISM does not report a source problem Use DISM’s normal repair-source behavior. Check whether RestoreHealth completes; if it fails, inspect CBS.log.
Windows Update cannot supply the repair files or DISM reports a source problem Provide a valid Windows installation or Windows folder as an alternate source. Confirm the source is appropriate for the installed Windows Server version and the specific repair scenario.

Replace <servername> with the appropriate source computer; the example is not a universal path. Microsoft says the source computer should run the same operating-system version. Verify that the folder is accessible and suitable before running the command. The /LimitAccess option prevents DISM from using Windows Update, so use this form only when you intend to rely on the supplied source. See Microsoft’s alternate repair-source instructions.

Interpret 0x800F081F only when it appears

If the actual error is 0x800F081F, Microsoft defines it as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: the source for a package or file was not found. That points to a missing repair source; it does not establish that this is the cause of an unspecified SFC or DISM failure. Microsoft’s error reference is for Windows Client, so apply this interpretation only when that exact code is present and consider the server’s own logs and context. Microsoft lists DISM RestoreHealth, followed by SFC and a restart, as a mitigation for this component-store condition. See Microsoft’s Windows Update error reference.

If the error occurs while installing a feature or role

For a failure specifically during Windows Server feature or role installation, use Microsoft’s server-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming Windows Update is the only cause. It recommends DISM RestoreHealth, checking CBS.log, and running SFC after component-store repair. The applicable steps and logs depend on the installation failure; capture the exact feature or role operation and its error alongside the system details. See Microsoft’s Windows Server feature and role troubleshooting guidance, last updated February 12, 2026 according to Microsoft Learn.

What establishes whether the issue is solved

A successful DISM completion followed by an SFC scan with its final result recorded supports that the documented component-store repair sequence ran. If either command fails, or the original operation still fails, the case is not resolved by merely having run the commands. The exact output, OS edition and build, repair-source availability, and relevant CBS.log entries are needed to identify the server-specific cause.
