If Windows says your device is no longer receiving security updates, the PC will not suddenly stop working. It does mean that its Windows version may no longer get Microsoft security fixes, leaving it more exposed to newly discovered threats. The right next step depends on your exact Windows version and edition: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, while Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro have updates through October 13, 2026.
What the warning means
Microsoft uses alerts such as “You’re not receiving security updates” and “Your device has reached the end of service” when a Windows release has reached the end of its support period. The computer remains usable, but an unsupported Windows release no longer receives its regular operating-system security fixes, other quality updates, or Windows technical support. That increases the risk from newly discovered vulnerabilities. Microsoft’s explanation of the Windows 10 notification says each Windows 10 version is supported for 18 months.

Check which Windows version and edition you have
Support dates apply to specific releases and editions, not just to the Windows brand name. Check the warning and your installed version before deciding whether you need an upgrade or another option.

Choose a way to stay protected
Upgrade the current PC if it is eligible
If your Windows 10 PC meets the requirements, Microsoft says you can upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10 and check for the offered upgrade. If no upgrade is offered, check the device’s compatibility before attempting another installation method. A move to Windows 11 does not remove the need to stay on a currently supported Windows 11 release.
Use Windows 10 Extended Security Updates as a temporary bridge
Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) provide critical and important security updates for eligible Windows 10 devices; they do not add new features or provide general Windows technical support. Microsoft’s consumer information currently conflicts on the end date: its Windows 10 support article says consumer ESU protection runs through October 12, 2027, while its end-of-support page says updates run through October 13, 2026. Enrollment options and timing may also vary by region. Check the offer and terms shown in Settings and the Microsoft guidance for your region before relying on either date.

Replace a PC that cannot be upgraded
If the device is ineligible for Windows 11, or you prefer not to continue using it, Microsoft recommends considering a new Windows 11 PC. Before buying, compare the machine with your actual needs, including the applications and peripherals you use, accessibility requirements, budget, and warranty. Do not assume that an advertised Windows 11 device is the right fit without checking its specifications.

Antivirus is not a substitute for Windows updates
Antivirus software can help detect or block some threats, but Microsoft says it does not replace operating-system security updates. It cannot make an unsupported Windows release receive the fixes Microsoft no longer provides.
Microsoft 365 app updates do not extend Windows support
Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will continue to receive security updates through October 10, 2028. That date applies to those apps; it does not mean Windows 10 itself remains supported.
