If Windows Search is blank, slow, or missing files, first check whether the taskbar search box itself is unresponsive or whether search opens but cannot find results. Then check indexed locations and file-content settings before rebuilding or recovering anything. Windows Search relies on an index, so a file outside its scope—or a document type set to search properties only—may not appear even when the file is still on your PC.
Windows Search not working: identify what is failing
Separate a search-interface problem from a missing-results problem before changing settings. Try searching for a known filename in File Explorer at This PC. This is a practical way to narrow the issue, not a Microsoft diagnostic test.

- The taskbar search box does not respond: The problem may be with the search interface rather than whether a particular folder is indexed.
- Search opens but returns nothing or incomplete results: Check indexed locations, indexing status, and file-type settings.
- File Explorer search cannot find a known file: Check whether the file’s folder is included in the index, and whether the file still exists at that location.
- Only one folder or file type is missing: Focus on that folder’s indexing scope or the file type’s content setting.
Windows 11 search not working: check index scope and status
Windows Search creates an index of files and their properties to make searches faster. If a location is outside the active scope, its files may not appear in results. Microsoft explains the indexing modes and settings in Search indexing in Windows.

| Mode | Coverage | Resource use |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | Indexes common user folders—Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop—by default. You can add other locations. | Designed to balance search coverage and system resources. |
| Enhanced | Indexes all user folders and files. | Can use more system resources than Classic. |
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Search. Depending on the release, the page may be labeled Searching Windows. Review whether Classic or Enhanced is selected and whether the folder you need is included. To include another location, choose Customize search locations, then Modify, and select the folder.

Enhanced can help when you need broad coverage, but it may use more resources. Microsoft says initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours; allow it time to finish after changing scope. Microsoft also gives a rule of thumb that the index is less than 10 percent of the size of indexed files—this is not a guaranteed limit.
Make document text searchable
Searching filenames and searching the text inside documents are different. Under Advanced indexing options > Advanced > File Types, check the setting for the relevant extension. Properties only indexes information about the file, not its contents. Choose Properties and content if you want Windows to search text inside that file type.

Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
Microsoft documents built-in Search and Indexing troubleshooting paths for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Exact labels can vary by release.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search.
- Open Advanced indexing options.
- Select Advanced, then choose Troubleshoot search and indexing.
- Follow the wizard and review its findings and suggested actions.
Microsoft also provides this route on its lost-files after upgrading Windows support page.

Windows 10
- Open Control Panel and search for Indexing Options.
- Open Indexing Options, then select Advanced.
- Under Index Settings, choose Troubleshoot search and indexing.
- Follow the wizard and review its results.
Windows search not finding files: check whether they are actually missing
Missing search results do not prove a file was deleted or that the index is corrupt. After a Windows upgrade, files may be hidden, in a different location, associated with a temporary profile, or stored in OneDrive. Microsoft’s guide to finding lost files after an upgrade covers these checks.
- Search This PC for a known filename and check the result’s location.
- If you cannot remember a filename, try a wildcard search for a file type, such as
*.docor*.mp3. - Check whether you are signed in to a temporary profile and whether files may be hidden or moved.
- If the files are in OneDrive, use OneDrive’s separate recovery guidance rather than assuming Windows indexing will restore them.
Rebuilding or changing the index cannot recover a deleted file or put a moved file back in its former folder.

File Explorer search not working: when to move beyond indexing
If scope, file-type settings, and the troubleshooter do not resolve the problem, consider whether Windows has broader issues. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooters page explains that supported troubleshooters run through Get Help and report findings and suggested remedies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows also offers Repair or Reset controls for some apps, but they are not available for every app. Do not assume there is a Search-specific Repair button; Microsoft’s app and program repair guidance describes the conditional availability of those controls. Microsoft notes on that page that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025.
For wider Windows problems, Microsoft recommends starting with less disruptive recovery options and backing up important files first. See Recovery options in Windows. A USB recovery drive is optional preparation for recovery, not a repair for Search. If you create one, follow Microsoft’s instructions; its guidance does not specify a required capacity. On a work or school device, contact your IT department if built-in troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
